Barbara Ann Reibling

Barbara Reibling of Greenport peacefully passed away at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue, N.Y. on Monday, June 25, 2018. She was 73 years old.

Born on November 13, 1944 to Genevieve (Smercak) and Charles Dietrich in North Tarrytown, N.Y. Barbara was a graduate of Northern Westchester Community College, where she earned an associate degree.

Barbara married the love of her life and best friend, Albert W. Reibling Jr., on October 20, 1963. Together for 55 years, they made their home and family in Yorktown Heights, and Greenport, N.Y. They now reside in Simsbury, Conn., as well as Greenport, N.Y.  After raising her family and running her own small businesses, she worked for Merrill Lynch and had a long successful career at IBM.

Barbara was a wine and crossword puzzle lover. Cooking was her greatest passion, and she was an accomplished chef. When not in the kitchen and entertaining family and friends, Barbara enjoyed playing Mahjong with her friends. She loved the Peconic Bay and the North Fork region. Since the mid-1960s, she and her family spent as much time as possible at their dream house in Greenport, NY.

Barbara is survived by her husband Albert; her sister Kathy Mitchell of Tannersville, N.Y.; her daughter, Carolyn Bligh, and her husband Jeannot of Simsbury, Conn.; her son, Rusty, and his wife Michele of South Carolina; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, June 28, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southhold, NY. Graveside services will follow at Sterling Cemetery in Greenport, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley.

Arrangements were in the care of DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

William H. Warner Jr.

William H. Warner Jr. of Southold died June 23.  He was 52 years old.

He was born on May 30, 1966 in Southampton to Shirley Hansen and William H. Warner Sr.

Family members said he enjoyed the outdoors and music.

Predeceased by his parents, he is survived by his sisters, Donna (Ronny) Garcia of Riverhead and Colleen (Frank) Drobny of Southold; his uncle, Frederick Hansen Jr., of Southold; his nephews, Daniel Garcia and Matthew Drobny; his niece, Megan Drobny; and his companion, Pat Gross.

The family has chosen to remember his life privately.  Interment will be at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Arthur N. Boulanger and Lynn Z. Boulanger

Arthur N. Boulanger of Nassau Point, Cutchogue died suddenly at home  April 27, at the age of 71.  Lynn Z. Boulanger, his wife, died after a long illness at VNS Hospice in East Northport  June 24, at the age of 72.

Arthur was born in Queens on August 30, 1946, to Albert J. and Kathryn (Potochny) Boulanger and served in the U.S. Army for six years until his honorable discharge as a Captain.  A graduate of Queens College (CUNY), he had been an English teacher with Townsend-Harris High School.

Lynn was born in Queens on November 10, 1945, to Martin and Lucille Auerbach. A graduate of Queens College (CUNY), she had been a human resource manager with Banco Santander for seven years and JP Morgan for 22 years.

Art and Lynn were married on June 14, 1980, and made their home on Nassau Point in Cutchogue, where Lynn’s family had lived since 1962.

Left to mourn their passing is their son, Martin Ames Scott, and his wife, Keturah, of Cutchogue; two grandsons, Martin Harold and Wesley Ethan Scott; Art’s sister, Arlene Biondo; and Lynn’s cousins, Marjorie Auerbach, Andrew (Diane) Auerbach, Roy (Claudia) Auerbach and Gayle Sadlo.

Lynn was predeceased by a sister, Joanne, in 1978 and by cousins, Andrea Auerbach Spatz and Toby Halpern.

The family has chosen to remember their lives privately.

Pauline C. Pharr

Pauline C Pharr, 72, died at home June 25, after a 19 month battle with leukemia. 

She leaves behind her husband of 51 years, Michael Pharr; two children, Simon Pharr and Charlotte Vishnyakov; her older brother, Joseph Hutnik, of LaGrangeville, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

Born July 19, 1945, in Tarrytown, N.Y., she attended local schools, earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University, and two master’s degrees from Columbia and Stony Brook University, hence her nickname MA-MA. 

For 25 years, Pauline and her husband worked together in the toy business.  She then went on to teach at Suffolk Community College, attaining the rank of Adjunct Associate Professor of English as a Second Language.

Pauline was an active member of St Patrick’s R.C. Church of Southold. She was proud of her garden. She was well known for braided rugs, hand-knitted socks, nature photography, Scrabble and punning skills.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 28, from 3 to 7 p.m. at  DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 29,  at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, officiated by Father John Barrett. The Rite of Committal will be private at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery in Tarrytown, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to one’s favorite charity.

Ruth A. DeLong

Long time Greenport resident Ruth A. DeLong was called home by the Lord on June 18, 2018. She was 92. 

Born in Sunbury, Pa. in 1925, she graduated from high school and took a job in a hat factory.  During World War II she met her husband, Elwood DeLong.  Together they moved to Greenport, where he worked at Plum Island until retirement.  She lived on 6th St. for more than 50 years until 2014, when she moved to the San Diego area to live with her daughter.  While she was there, she was very active in her church and made many good friends there. 

Preceded in death by her husband and all eight of her siblings, she is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Felker (John) of Hollywood, Fla.; and Lois Hamersly (Mark) of Santee, Calif.

Interment was at Calverton National Cemetery.

Jean B. Kart

Jean B. Kart of Riverhead died June 25 at Peconic Bay Medical Center. She was 88.

The daughter of Fred Boergesson and Helen Crippen, she was born Dec. 15, 1929, in Newark, N.J.

She attended Southold High School and married Martin E. Kart in 1951.

Ms. Kart worked as a clerical worker for LILCO.

Predeceased by her husband, Martin, and brother, L. Fred Boergesson, she is survived by her sons, Richard  (Donna), David (Terry) and Gary (Irene); and her daughter Lynn Sutherland (Mark); her brother, Robert Boergesson (Johanna); grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, June 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m., and the funeral service will be Friday, June 29, at 11 a.m., at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead.  Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Mary Helen Cassel

Mary Cassel, a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother, passed away, surrounded by her family, on June 18 at San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport, N.Y. She was 103. Mary was born on April 8, 1915, in Uniondale, Long Island, to Mary and Benjamin Ostrosky, first generation Polish immigrants. In 1935, Mary married William “Bill” Cassel, and they had three children together, Jean, James “Jim” and Joan, while residing in Southold, N.Y.

Upon moving to Patchogue in 1952, Mary and Bill established, owned and operated Cassel GMC Trucks, once the largest and oldest dealership on Long Island. Mary was a dynamic, tenacious businesswoman who worked hand in hand with her husband for over thirty years to build Cassel Trucks into a thriving family business known throughout the community. 

In addition to her business acumen, Mary was deeply committed to her family and religious faith. She always supported community efforts and charities, and made sure to help anyone in need of assistance. Mary enjoyed traveling with her husband, eventually moving to Florida, where she loved to tend to her garden. She was predeceased by her husband and moved back to Quogue and East Patchogue in 1995 to be closer to her family. Mary cherished the time she spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. They remember Babcha fondly for her homemade clam chowder and long walks by the pond.

Mary is survived by her three children, Jean More of East Moriches, Jim Cassel (Carol) of Southold, and Joan Cassel-Kelly (Neal) of Remsenburg; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.

In celebration of her life, the family suggests contributions be sent to San Simeon by the Sound. In the memo, please state “For the Activity Department, in Honor of Mary Cassel”. A gift delivering joy to others. 

A private memorial mass will be held for family.

Kenneth Arthur Higgins

Kenneth Arthur Higgins of Greenport died at his home Sunday, June 24. He was 70 years old.

He was born on August 6, 1947, in New York City to Arthur and Cathryn (Tolan) and raised in Bayside, Queens. He graduated from Miami University and was a member of the U.S. Navy from 1968 until his honorable discharge in 1972.

Ken was the co-CEO of H&H Aircraft Services in Richmond, Va. Family members said he enjoyed golfing and sailing in his free time.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Maureen, on April 7, 2016, he is survived by his daughter Elizabeth, of Danbury, Conn.; his mother, of Flushing; his brothers, Brian, of Greenport and Flushing, and James, of Floral Park; and his business partner, Jay Hill.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, July 6, at 11 a.m., at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Father Richard Hoerning will officiate. The U.S. Navy will render military honors at the conclusion of the Mass.

Arrangements are in the care of DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

Pearl Kaplan

Pearl Kaplan of North White Plains, N.Y., died at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue Tuesday, June 26. She was 91 years old.

She was born in the Bronx on July 8, 1926, to Hyman and Esther (Demb) Steiner.

Raised in the Bronx, she was educated at the High School of Fine Arts. On Sept. 15, 1946, she married Richard Kaplan. The longtime White Plains resident spent winters in Highland Beach, Fla., and summers at Woodlands in Mohegan, N.Y.

Pearl was a cartoonist and artist, and in her spare time enjoyed tennis, cultural events, traveling, theater, participating in theater groups and, most of all, enjoyed spending time with her family.

Predeceased by her husband, Richard, on Feb. 26, 2016, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and Skip Schoenhaar of Cutchogue; a son and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Maria Kaplan of Maryland; a brother, Jackie Steiner; six grandchildren: Victoria Schoenhaar, David Schoenhaar and his wife, Kristin, Joseph Kaplan, Julia Kaplan, Stephen Kaplan and Laura (Kaplan) Best; and great-grandchildren, Jack, Brendan and Emma Schoenhaar.

Interment was at Cutchogue Cemetery on Thursday, June 28, 2018.

Arrangements were in the care of DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

Dr. Jonathan Y. Richmond

Dr. Jonathan Young Richmond of Southport, N.C., passed away on June 27. He was 77.

Dr. Richmond was born February 10, 1941, in Norwalk, Conn., the son of the late Allen Richmond, Jr. and Adele (Ketzinger).

Dr. Richmond received both Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science degrees from the University of Connecticut and completed his Ph.D. in genetics at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia. He was a longtime public health official, serving as a biological safety officer at the Plum Island Animal Disease Center, chief of the safety operations section in the occupational safety and health branch of the National Institutes of Health, and director of the office of health and safety at the Centers for Disease Control. His career positioned him as an early and enduring expert in the field of biosafety, and propelled him to years of dedicated global volunteerism in AIDS education and polio eradication.

Jonathan devoted much of his life to his community and was an enthusiastic member of many organizations, including the Southport Rotary Club, Chi Phi Fraternity, Scouting of America, the Civil War Round Table, Brunswick Little Theatre, and Providence Home. His community activism included countless hours of mentoring youth and colleagues. An avid gardener and gifted artist, Jonathan was passionate about photography, illustration, and theatrical design. Among his many professional and civic accolades, Jonathan received the 2013 Walter L. Cronkite, Jr. Chi Phi Congressional Award for Humanitarianism.

Jonathan was a steadfast and affectionate husband, father, grandfather, and brother. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 52 years, Anne Tucker Richmond; four daughters, Eleanor Erickson of Boiling Spring Lakes, N.C., Patricia Richmond and husband Andrew Hill of Atlanta, Ga., Jennifer Iapalucci and husband Adrian of Boiling Spring Lakes, and Katherine Deese and husband Mark of Wilmington, N.C.; seven grandchildren: Jonathan, Allison, Max, Rebecca, Felix, Milo  and Danielle; a sister, Marcia Fosberg of Healdsburg, Calif.; and many loving extended family members. Dr. Richmond was predeceased by two half-brothers, Allen and Thomas Richmond.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 7, at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Southport, where Jonathan was an active member.

Paul Kulsziski

Paul Kulsziski of Greenport on May 17. He was 88.

He was born in Orange, N.J., on Oct. 25, 1929.

Mr. Kulszinski was an engineer and retired from Motorola.

Family members said he was a model airplane enthusiast and has built over 100 planes, with wing spans a few inches to six feet across. He spent much of his time restoring the S.W. Philips house in Greenport, where he recently completed a restoration of the famous lions on the front porch. He was a regular audience member at the Metropolitan Opera, and was a wine aficionado who was always willing to share his collection with family and friends.

A funeral Mass will be Saturday, July 7, at 11 a.m., at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Friends and family will gather after the service to celebrate his life.

David A. Doroski

David A. Doroski, a lifelong resident of Southold, died suddenly at home on July 1.  He was 60 years old.

He was born on October 5, 1957 to Geraldine (Butler) and Adam Doroski in Greenport.

On September 11, 1982, he married Dawn Skrezec, and together they made their home in Southold. He was currently a heavy equipment operator for the Southold Town Highway Department.

Predeceased by his mother, Geraldine, on Aug. 1, 2016, Dave is survived by his wife Dawn; two sons, Jeremy  and Jason, both of Astoria; his father, Adam “Zack”,  of Southold; sister June (Sinan) Kutur of Turkey; niece Allison Latham; nephews Kyle Skrezec and Donald Sayre, Jr.; brother-in-law Darrin E. Skrezec of Southold; and mother and father-in-law Doris and Edward Skrezec, of Southold.

The family will receive visitors Friday, July 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, July 7, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Southold, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley. Interment will be private. Alma B. Ryder

Alma B. Ryder died peacefully at San Simeon by the Sound  June 24, 2018, 38 years to the day her husband, Howard “Chick” passed. She was 101 years old.

Alma was born in her mother’s house on West Neck Road on Shelter Island on Sept. 22, 1916. A true hare-legger, Alma lived on Shelter Island until recent years. She married fellow hare-legger, Chick, on April 17, 1937 at St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Bridgehampton.   

After starting her family, Alma spent World War II knitting socks for the war effort, driving a taxi for her father-in-law and delivering mail from the North Ferry to both Shelter Island Post Offices. In the 1950s she went to work for the Weber estate and worked her way through several jobs before becoming Miss Caroline Weber’s personal assistant. She worked for the Weber estate until Miss Weber’s passing in the late 1980s.

Over her lifetime Alma enjoyed many hobbies and crafts, particularly crocheting and knitting. You would be hard pressed to find a house on Shelter Island that did not have one of her creations in it. In addition to providing her handmade items to family and friends, she also donated several each year to St. Mary’s Church holiday sale.

Alma was a lifelong parishioner of her beloved St. Mary’s Church. She was instrumental in re-opening St. Mary’s in the 1950s after it had been closed for many years. Always ready, willing and able to assist the church in whatever way was needed, she served as a member and president of St. Mary’s altar guild as well as secretary of the church.

Alma enjoyed spending time with friends and family, including her extended family at Silver Circle, where she would see her fellow Shelter Island friends weekly. In 2011, Shelter Island Town acknowledged her contribution to the Island over her lifetime by declaring September 22, 2011 Alma Ryder Day, an honor she was particularly proud of.

Alma is survived by her children, Melva R. McLaughlin and Charles “Bub” Ryder;  her granddaughters Cindy  Arkinson, Kerry  McLaughlin, Donna Cass and Mary Payne; as well as several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and all the loving friends and family who affectionately called Alma “Mom.” Alma is predeceased by her husband Howard and her grandson, Barry. Family members respectfully ask for donations to be sent to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on Shelter Island and San Simeon by the Sound nursing home in Greenport.

John Martin Krukowski

Longtime Greenport resident John Martin “Kricket” Krukowski died June 28. He was 93 years old.
Born in Peconic Oct. 28, 1924, to Victoria (Paluska) and Joseph Krukowski, he served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946, achieving the rank of Technician 4th Grade.

On Nov. 2, 1947, he married Margaret Mary Montgomery at his home in Peconic.

Mr. Krukowski worked as a commercial fisherman and was the head maintenance man at San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport.

A member of the Greenport American Legion, family members said he was a gardener and handyman for everyone.

Mr. Krukowski was predeceased by two brothers, Chester and George; and sisters Martha Westerlund, Rose Sobotka and Sophie Tamin. He is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peggy”; his daughter, Victoria Chute (Ray); his sisters Esther Hunter and Mary Punda; three grandchildren: Brian, Greg and Carl; and six great-grandchildren: Jacquelyn, Alyssa, Austin, Aiden, Alex and Addisyn.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, July 8, from 1 to 5 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, July 9, at St. Agnes R.C. Church. Interment will follow at the church cemetery. Father Richard Hoerning will officiate.

The family asks that memorial donations be sent to the Greenport American Legion Building Fund, 121 3rd St., Greenport, NY 11944.

John J. Callanan

John J. Callanan of Mattituck died Saturday, June 30. He was 87 years old.

John was born on June 17, 1931, in Manhattan, to Joseph and Mary Callanan. Prior to living in Mattituck for the past 20 years, he lived in Bird-In-Hand, Pa.

Family members said he enjoyed weight lifting and spending time with his dogs.

John is survived by his partner, Carol Collins of Mattituck;  her son James (Kim) of Ronkonkoma; and their daughters, Courtney and Shayna.

Graveside services with U.S. Marine Corps honors will be held Thursday, July 5 at 10:15 a.m. at Calverton National Cemetery. The funeral procession will be leaving at 9:30 a.m. from DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kan., 66675-8517 would be appreciated.

Paul W. Baker Jr. of Westport, Mass., died July 1. He was 61. 

The son of Paul and Jean (Morralle), Mr. Baker was born in Greenport and was a lifelong resident of New York before moving to Westport last year. He worked as a plumber for Mattituck Plumbing & Heating.

Predeceased by his parents and his wife, Linda (Silvia), he is survived by his sons, Paul III of North Attleboro, Mass. and Eric of Westport, Mass.; a brother, Christopher Walsh of San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Suzanne Seuferling of Pa.; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Apostal Passadakes of Rego Park and Southold died on July 4. He was 50 years old.

Apostol was born on July 9, 1967, in Istanbul, Turkey to Alexandra (Moussas) and Andrew Passadakes. He grew up in Rego Park, New York, where he attended P.S. 139, Russell Sage Junior High School and graduated from Forest Hills High School. He then went on to St. John’s University, where he attained dual college degrees, a B.A. in communications and a B.A. in business.

Family members said he was an avid sports enthusiast and loved soccer, football and hockey. His favorite team was the New York Islanders. He enjoyed history and astronomy, and more than anything, he loved his family.

He was a member of St. Demetrios Church in Queens and attended Transfiguration of Christ Greek Orthodox Church in Mattituck.

Apostol is survived by his mother, Alexandra; and his sister, Maria.

The family will receive visitors on Saturday, July 7, from 8-10:30 a.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

The Divine Liturgy will follow at 11 a.m. at Sts. Anargyroi Taxiarchis And Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Church in Greenport.

Interment will follow at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery in Southold.

After the morning’s services, all are invited to join the family at the Olive Branch Restaurant in Greenport at 2:30 p.m.

Harold J. Kiefer

Harold J. Kiefer of Orient died July 7. He was 85 years old.

Born on Nov. 23, 1932, he was born in Queens. He worked for the phone company and Local Union #3 in Flushing. He moved to Orient eight years ago.

Family members said he loved fishing, or as friends liked to say, he loved drowning worms.

Predeceased by his beloved wife, Joan, he is survived by his daughters, Kathleen (John) Listner, and Mary Ellen (Henry) Sampson; two grandchildren, Katy and John; two sisters, Carol Speckman and Rosemary Johnstone, all of Queens; numerous nieces, nephews and friends, including Eileen, of Southold.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Our Lady of Hope Church in Middle Village, N.Y. on Wednesday, July 11 at 9:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Farmingdale.

Arrangements were in the care of Papavero Funeral Home in Maspeth.

Fern Simpson

Fern Alvin Lawson Simpson quietly passed away at the young age of 98 on July 2. She was the daughter of Matilda Houston Brett and John Colbert Lawson and was born at the family home in Congers, N.Y. on Dec. 17, 1919.

She was a 1938 graduate of Congers High School.

On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 20, 1941, Fern was united in marriage to George A. Simpson, the love of her life and best friend. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, George was called to serve his country as a lieutenant in the United States Merchant Marine. During his service, Fern worked stateside at the Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, N.Y. and maintained their home until his return.

Fern and George moved to Levittown in 1948 and on to Greenport in 1953, where she spent the remaining 65 years of her life. The Simpsons were the proprietors of Hoppy’s Cleaners, where she was his right hand and partner. Together, they built a thriving local business and gave much support to the community. Fern was an active member of The United Methodist Church, an avid and accomplished swimmer, and a supporter of the local school and youth groups. Later in life she enjoyed music, drawing and love of nature, along with trips to the Candy Man in Orient.

She truly loved life to the fullest through simple pleasures, a circle of friends, devotion to her many dogs over the years and loving her six great-grandchildren. She was a devoted aunt to her nieces and nephews. She had the uncanny ability to reach everyone in a positive way.

Fern is predeceased by her husband George; brothers Herbert and Richard; and sisters Gladys, Marjorie and Olive.

She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia (James) Pirillo and Deborah (Harold) House; along with her grandchildren, James (Sylvia) Pirillo, Peter (Jamie) Pirillo, BJ (Stav) Piel, Jennifer (Kenneth) Bigora and Jeffrey Piel; as well as great-grandchildren Maya and Lila Piel, Abigail and Taylor Bigora and Lukas and Mason Pirillo.

According to her wishes, family and friends gathered to celebrate her life at a simple graveside ceremony on July 5 at the Greenport Stirling Cemetery as she joined George in eternal rest.

In celebration of her life, the family suggests support be given to San Simeon by the Sea in honor of their adult day care program, the North Fork Animal Shelter in memory of her faithful companion Chopper, or the Southold Senior Center for their continued dedication to caring for our elderly population.
