Florence A. Ostroski

Florence A. Ostroski of Southold died July 14. She was 79 years old. 

Flo was born in Greenport on March 25, 1939 to John and Delia (Malinauskas) Pilles. Raised and educated in Greenport, she married Leroy Ostroski in 1958, and together they made their home there until they moved to Southold.

For many years, she was a hairdresser and owner of Hair Scene by Flo in Greenport Village.  She was a member of the Seniors Club and St. Patrick’s R.C. Church. Family members said she enjoyed painting in her free time.

Predeceased by her husband Leroy and brothers Richard and Thomas Pilles, she is survived by her children, Leroy and Debra, both of Southold, and David of Greenport; as well as a grandson that she considered a son, Marc of Southold.

The family will receive visitors on Monday, July 16, from 2 to 5 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 17, at 10 a.m. at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold.  Father John J. Barrett will officiate. Interment will follow the church cemetery.

Arrangements were in the care of Defriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

Bette Ann Davis DiOrio

Bette Ann Davis DiOrio of Shelter Island, beloved mother, wife and grandmother, passed away at San Simeon by the Sound on February 26. She was 88 years old.

Born to Helen (Schauer) and Harry Davis in Manhattan on July 24, 1929, Bette was raised in Kingston, New York. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Teachers College at Columbia University and her registered nursing degree from St. Luke’s in New York. Bette met her husband Tony in the Bronx while working as a public health nurse in Westchester County. She fell in love with his dancing and singing. She knew he would be a great father to their children. Bette and her family moved from the Bronx to Shelter Island in 1972.

Bette was a public health nurse on the North and South forks, spending her last 10 years of work at the Suffolk County prenatal clinic in Southampton. She was passionate, her family said, about providing prenatal services to low income women.

Bette’s favorite pastimes were swimming at Menhaden Lane and Fresh Pond, exercising at the FIT center, feeding her birds and driving her five-speed Dodge Neon Sport.

She enjoyed participating in her community as a member of the Shelter Island Red Cross. Bette also enjoyed reading the Sunday New York Times and the Shelter Island Reporter. She was a strong woman, her family remembered, with a great sense of humor and a wonderful smile.

Predeceased by her sister, Eleanor DeWitt of Accord, N.Y., and her loving husband, Anthony, of Shelter Island, she is survived by her daughter, Mary of Portland, Ore.; sons Philip (Linda) of Shelter Island and Harry (Peg) of Shelter Island and New York City; grandchildren Jason of Clearwater, Fla; Christopher and Mia, both of Shelter Island.

Burial will be held at Our Lady of the Isle Cemetery on Shelter Island, July 24.

Eleanor Mae Papish of Mattituck died on July 15 She was 90 years old.

The family will receive visitors on Friday, July 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 21 at the funeral home, at a time to be determined.

Interment will follow at New Bethany Cemetery in Mattituck.

Memorial donations to the Mattituck Fire Department Rescue Squad would be appreciated. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

James O. Hillis

James O. Hillis of Greenport died at Eastern Long Island Hospital on July 16. He was 93 years old.

Born on Dec. 20, 1924 in Minot, N.D., he married Betty Jane Braaten  in Minneapolis on June 14, 1947. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, and then worked for Pan American World Airways for 38 years.

Family members said he loved to travel.

He is survived by his son, John; his daughter, Andrea; and one granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held on July 21 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport, officiated by the Rev. Garrett Johnson. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date.

Arrangements were in the care of Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Beatrice Margaret Jochen

Beatrice Margaret Jochen of Greenport died on July 18. She was 82 years old.

Born on Dec. 17, 1935, in New York City to Margaret (Barry) and Abraham Hyman, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Queen’s College.

She married Ernest Jochen on Aug. 25, 1957, in New York City and was a teacher there for over 40 years.

She is survived by her sister, Louise Resager; her daughter, Katherine, of Eastchester, N.Y.; and her son, Ernest, of New York City.

The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 23, at Calverton National Cemetery, with interment to follow.

The family asks that donations be given to your favorite charity in memory of Bea.

Arrangements were in the care of Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Daniel S. O’Connell

Daniel S. O’Connell of Southold, beloved husband, father and grandfather of seven, passed away July 18.  He was 72 years old.

Dan was born in Long Island City to Henrietta and Joseph O’Connell.  He was raised in Astoria and received his MBA from St. John’s University.  After serving in the army during the Vietnam War, Dan married Elaine Castagna.   They celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary this year.  They made a home in Clifton Park, N.Y., where they raised two daughters, Danielle and Stephanie.  Dan spent his career working for the Small Business Administration and the Small Business Development Center in Albany.  Dan and Elaine moved to Southold after his retirement, where Dan enjoyed fishing, boating and spending time with his grandchildren.  Dan became fast friends with everyone he met and will be remembered for his storytelling and sharp sense of humor.

Dan is survived by his wife, Elaine; daughters Danielle and Stephanie; their spouses; and seven grandchildren: Connor, Cailin, Declan, Liam, Kevin, Madelyn and Mikayla.

The family will receive visitors today, July 20, from 4 to 8 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. American Legion services will be held at 4:30 p.m. Prayer services will be held at 7 p.m., officiated by Father John Barrett.

The family will also receive visitors on Sunday, July 22, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, 1550 Route Nine, Clifton Park, N.Y. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 23, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary’s Church of Crescent, 86 Church Hill Rd. in Halfmoon, N.Y. Interment with U.S. Army honors will follow at Gerald B. H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y.

Memorial donations to the Addictions Care Center of Albany, Inc., 90 McCarty Ave., Albany, NY 12202; www.theacca.net would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.

Lydia Tuthill (Dickerson) Numbers, born in Southold on Sept. 2, 1918, to Albert T. Dickerson and Ethel Wines Boutcher died peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017, at age 99.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11, at 11a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Southold, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley. Memorial donations in Lydia’s memory may be made to the church.

Mary A. Pickard, formerly of Syosset and more recently of Peconic Landing, died July 22. She was 91 years old.

The daughter of Marie and James Pancamo, she was born in Manhattan on July 8, 1927.

She married Joseph Pickard on Oct. 29, 1955, in Brooklyn.

Mary received her Juris Doctor and was an attorney for the Nassau County Attorney’s Office in Mineola. A member of the Woodbury Republican Club and the Greater Woodbury Garden Club, she volunteered at the Syosset Senior Center and at the Community Church of Syosset.

Family members said she loved to travel and was an avid reader and lifelong learner.

Predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Joseph; her brothers, Jay, Joseph and Anthony; and her sister, Rose; she is survived by her son Joseph, of Oyster Bay.

The family will receive visitors Friday, July 27, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. The funeral services will be at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Southold, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Peter Kelley.

Burial will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011.

Reidar K. Carstensen

Reidar K. Carstensen of Greenport, formerly of Riverhead, died July 22 at Peconic Landing. He was 84 years old.

The son of Reidar and Valborg (Pedersen) Carstensen, he was born in Southold on Feb. 28, 1934. He attended Southold High School and married Margaret Tooker on Sept. 7, 1957, in Riverhead.

Mr. Carstensen worked as an engineer at Grumman in Calverton.

Predeceased by his wife, he is survived by his children, Debra Goodwin of Annapolis, Md., and Kurt, of New York City; his brother, Peter, of Maryland; and two grandchildren.

Cremation will be private.

Arrangements were in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

Frederick T. Carter of Cutchogue, formerly of Westhampton, died June 10 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 88 years old.

The son of Matilda and Alfred Carter, he was born on Nov. 6, 1929, in Southampton.

He worked as a custodian for the Westhampton Beach school district. His family said he loved golf and spending time with his family.

Predeceased by his wife Eleanor in 2018, and his son Jeffrey, he is survived by his daughter Rebecca Law of Cutchogue.

The funeral services and cremation were private.

Arrangements were in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

George DeLong

George DeLong of Southold died suddenly in Greenport on July 28, where he had been born 83 years earlier on June 4, 1935. He lived his entire life on Laurel Avenue.

He was the son of Jane (Vaughn) and George G. DeLong. He was a graduate of Southold High School and later attended NYU.

George served his country in the United States Air Force, and later enjoyed a career as a car salesman for many area dealerships.  He retired as general sales manager for Wells Pontiac Cadillac in Peconic.

He was a member of the Griswold Terry Glover American Legion Post #803, the Southold School Board, where he served as President from 1971-1981, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, where he served as Grand Master, and the First Presbyterian Church of Southold as an Elder.

For 50 years, he was a private pilot.

He is survived by his wife Carol (Boergesson), who he married on June 2, 1961, at the First Presbyterian Church of Southold; his children, Rene Suprina of Riverhead and Todd (Sandy) DeLong of Cutchogue; and six grandchildren: Amanda DeLong (Matt Williams), Matthew Suprina (Debbie), Nicholas DeLong (Katie Cogan), Scott DeLong, Lauren Enos and Bryan Enos. He was predeceased by a sister, Glenda Gail Radich.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, July 31, from 2 to 4 p.m., and from 7 to 9 P.M. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at  First Presbyterian Church of Southold.  The Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley will officiate.  Interment, with U.S. Air Force honors, will be at the church cemetery.

Memorial donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation would be appreciated.

Arrangements were in the care of DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

Katherine J. Brassil

Katherine J. Brassil of Southold died July 29  at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home in Greenport.  She was 94 years old.

She was born in Brooklyn on Nov. 25, 1923, to Timothy and Beatrice (Brady) Kelly.

Formerly of Brooklyn and Garden City, she came to the North Fork in 1974 and settled permanently in 1994.  For 20 years, she was a secretary for the New York Post.

In her spare time, she enjoyed shopping and tending to her flowers.

Predeceased by her husband, John, in 2005 and son John, in 1991; she is survived by two daughters: Claire, of New York City and Southold, and Kathryn, of the Bronx; two sisters, Carole Stuchbury, of Garden City, and Patricia Lennon, of Floral Park; and grandson John Brassil, of New York City.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m., at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold, officiated by Father Nicholas.  Interment will follow at the church cemetery.  Calling hours will be private.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home is serving the family.

Sophie R. Fink of Aquebogue died at home July 31. She was 98 years old.

The son of Annie (Chwoliboga) and Joseph Swotkewicz, she was born in Laurel on Nov. 24, 1919.

Family members said the former owner and operator of Fink’s farm stand in Wading River loved talking to her customers and giving away apples. She also loved animals and making jams and jellies.

Predeceased by her son Thomas in 1983 and her husband Edward in 1984, she is survived by her children, Sophie Stapon and Donald, both of Jamesport, Dolores Kreitsek of Mattituck, and Edward of Florida; 18 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Aug. 2, from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, Aug. 3 at 10 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead, with interment at the church cemetery.

Gregory D. Luce

Former Orient resident Gregory D. Luce, age 59, transitioned to heaven peacefully at home in Auburndale Fla. on July 26, 2018 under hospice care.

He was born May 8, 1959.

Greg is predeceased by his parents, Pete and Carole Luce of Orient. He was a devoted father and loving brother; he will be missed. He is survived by his brothers, Jeffery of Sarasota, Fla. and Daniel, of Vero Beach, Fla.; and his children, Sheldon and Chloe of Auburndale.

Greg was an avid fisherman who spent his younger years on the local waters, and later on in life became a commercial fisherman.

Services will be private.

His wishes were to bring his ashes to his favorite fishing spot Hallocks Bay.
