John DiNoto

John DiNoto, former New York State Supreme Court Justice, dies at 83.

After a battle with renal cancer and its complications, John DiNoto died May 9 at his home in Southold, N.Y., surrounded by his family.

A former justice of the New York State Supreme Court and Nassau County District Court, Judge DiNoto characterized his role as a jurist as a sacred trust. He was known for his integrity and rigor, and was frequently endorsed across party lines. His thorough and thoughtful decisions never eschewed human concerns.

Prior to his 14 years in the New York State Supreme Court, Judge DiNoto served as chief clerk of the Nassau County Court, chief clerk of the Surrogate Court and as a District Court judge. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College and New York Law School.

Judge DiNoto — known as “Jack” by friends and family — had a great love for the sea, and enjoyed countless excursions on his boat across the Sound and up and down the East Coast with his wife, Jeanmarie, as well as with friends and family. He had a deep love of nature, and expressed that had he not gone into law, he might have been a conservationist. He treasured hunting trips with his sons and time on his Harley. He was irrepressible as a motorcyclist and rode rebelliously into his 70s.

Jack was widely known for his sharp sense of humor, his wise and ready counsel, and his willingness to subordinate the dignity of the bench in deference to making his grandchildren laugh. Jack follows his parents, Dr. John and Ann DiNoto of Raffadali, Italy, and Brooklyn, respectively; his first wife, Patricia, who died in 1968; and his beloved grandchild Nicholas, who died in 2012.

Jack is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jeanmarie, and his children, Robert DiNoto, Eugene DiNoto, Anthony DiFalco, Cristina Bertrand, Ellen Colozzi, Gregory DiNoto, and by his sister, Andrea DiNoto. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, and a single great-grandchild, Lorelai, who was born within hours of his passing. Judge DiNoto’s proudest legacy was this family, borne of two marriages, but now grown indivisible.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold.

Memorial donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy.

This is a paid notice.

Charles Alfred Derosier

Charles Alfred Derosier, longtime Southold resident, passed away June 9, 2018, at San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport.

Charlie was born in Park Slope, Brooklyn, on Oct. 4, 1940. He graduated from the School of Industrial Design and attended The Cooper Union in New York. He began his advertising career at Macy’s flagship store, where, serving as fashion art director, he formed some of his most important, lifelong friendships. Charlie was a talented graphic artist and wordsmith, which served him well in a career at some of the largest New York advertising agencies of the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s, including the Marschalk Company and F. William Free, where he worked on campaigns for clients including Valentino, Coca-Cola and American Express.

A lifelong love of the coast and bracing salt air — discovered as a teenager working a summer job in North Haven, Maine — led him to the East End, first to Southampton as a part-time “weekender” with his family, and later settling permanently on the North Fork, over 28 years ago. A skilled craftsman with a meticulous eye for detail, Charlie spent his later years working as an independent carpenter and contractor for private clients, Southold Historical Society and Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor.

A downhill skier in his 20s, fisherman, watercolorist, baker, furniture maker and gardener, Charlie was also (as everyone who knew him knew so well) a lifelong Mets fan. Of all his pastimes, his favorite was, by far, walking the shorelines of his favorite Southold and Orient beaches in all seasons.

Charlie is survived by his daughter, Kate, of Ann Arbor, Mich.; his sister, Lois Derosier, brother-in-law, Trevor Rowe, and niece, Isabella Rowe, all of Southold; his former wife and lifelong friend, Jane Derosier, of Vineland, N.J.; as well as countless friends on the North Fork who meant so much to him.

Following his wishes, there will be no memorial service, but his family will gather in the fall at his beloved beach to honor and celebrate his life. He left this world filled with love and peace for and from those closest to him, and he is greatly missed.

This is a paid notice.

Clifford J. Benfield, born in Mineola, N.Y., on the 4th of July, 1924, died peacefully at home in Southold, N.Y., on June 23, 2018, surrounded by his family.

A veteran of WW2, Cliff left college during his sophomore year to enlist in the U.S. Army and served as a lieutenant in the Philippines in 1944. After the war, he returned to Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., to complete his undergraduate work, earn a master’s degree in psychology, and graduate in 1948. While at Union, he met Eunice Ann Patrick, his future wife of 68 years, and they were married in 1949.

Cliff led a highly successful business career in personnel and human relations, beginning at Servo Corporation, in Mineola, NY.  Over the course of the ensuing years, he served as Vice President at Columbia Records, Executive Vice President at CBS, The Lowes Corporation, American Express International Banking Corporation, and culminated his career as founder and president of Hay Career Consultants and partner of the Hay Group, all in New York City.

Throughout his life, Cliff was greatly admired by colleagues, friends and family. His advice and guidance on career as well as personal matters was often and regularly sought by all.

Outside of work, Cliff was always actively involved. He committed years of service both to Union College, where he served as a trustee, receiving the school’s highest alumni honor as gold medal recipient, and as a vestryman of Trinity Episcopal Church in Roslyn, N.Y., where he was involved in numerous initiatives, including a building committee which greatly enhanced the church’s facilities, the benefits of which are still being enjoyed to this day.

An avid sailor and lifetime member of the New York Yacht Club, he and his wife moved to Southold, and made it their home since 1983. He was well known in the community for his work with Southold Historical Society and the restoration of the Horton Point Lighthouse, leading to the reinstallation of its light and official reactivation. Today, the lighthouse is one of Southold’s unique treasures and attractions. He was also actively involved with The Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck, N.Y.

Cliff was a remarkable man, who had a long life filled with many amazing experiences and events: being held by Charles Lindbergh as a 2 year old just before takeoff of the Spirit of St. Louis, growing up through the Great Depression, World War II in the Pacific, a storied executive career through dynamically changing decades in the business world, and an engaged retirement life since moving to Southold. Through all of this, he unfailingly put family and friends first. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered always.

Clifford is survived and missed by his wife, Eunice; his three sons and their wives: John and Maureen, of Port Washington, N.Y,; James and Lois, of Norwalk Conn.; and Daniel and Cynthia, of Mystic, Conn.  He loved and was adored by his seven grandchildren: Jack, Peter, Ben, Katie, Annie, Teddy and Thomas, and their spouses; and by his great-grandchildren: Emily, Lillian, Caroline, Julia and James.

His wake will be held at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home, 735 First Street, Greenport, N.Y., 11944, from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 27, 2018.
