Arthur A. Levin, D.D.S. of Greenport and Boynton Beach, Fla., passed away May 10 at the age of 103.

For over 60 years, he was the husband of Emma Rothman Levin from Southold. Arthur was born and raised in Greenport and graduated from Greenport High School. After attending the University of Alabama and graduating from University of Pennsylvania Dental School, he spent his entire professional life practicing dentistry at 19 Front Street in Greenport. His home for most of those years was 512 Front Street until his later years when he moved to the Sound View Inn for the summers, which was build by his brother Jack, who lived to 105.

Arthur began spending parts of every winter in Florida at the age of 65, but he continued his dental practice in Greenport the rest of the year until he fully retired at the age of 75. Up to three years ago, he returned to Greenport every summer, along with his wife, Emma, until she passed away eight years ago. In Florida, he lived in the Indian Springs Development and Country Club in Boynton Beach, Florida, until his death. He was an avid golfer — he only stopped playing at the age of 98.

Arthur was a lifelong member and supporter of Congregation Tifereth Israel in Greenport. He was a founder of both the Gardiners Bay Country Club on Shelter Island, where he played golf through much of his dental career, and the Island’s End Country Club in Greenport.

Arthur is survived by his two daughters: Carol B. Levin, M.D., a psychiatrist in Okemos, Mich., and Diane E. Levin, Ph.D., a professor of education and human development at Wheelock College of Boston University. He is the grandfather of Julie Levin Russo, Ph.D., Michael Russo and Eli Goldstein.

Services for Arthur will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Temple Tifereth Israel in Greenport.

This is a paid notice.

Kenneth M. Newman

Kenneth M. Newman, former proprietor of The Old Print Shop and an expert on American nineteenth-century prints, died on May 8 at Stony Brook Hospital. He was 90.

Following a brief service as a deckhand in the Pacific Theater during World War II and as a carpenter building houses near home in Orient, N.Y., Kenneth joined his father Harry Shaw Newman in the antiquarian business in New York City in 1949. Working up from the shipping department of The Old Print Shop, he cultivated an expertise in prints, maps, and American art—notably, the work of Currier & Ives and John James Audubon.

Kenneth had no use for an office. He stood amidst The Old Print Shop’s bustle, welcoming all and sharing his professional passions. His enthusiasm for building private and public American art collections endures in his sons Robert and Harry’s management of the family business.

After a 64-year tenure, Ken hung up his suit and tie, retiring at age 86 to return to Orient, with his wife to the house they had built when they married. A 71-year veteran of the Orient Fire Department, Kenneth always considered Orient to be his home. He was a staple at the Country Store, where he chatted over coffee and sandwiches. Summers he spent riding his mower, gardening, and fishing. Winters he enjoyed hunting and iceboating.

Kenneth was a man who always had a twinkle in his eye and a warm smile. He appreciated a good ladder, enjoyed fireworks, and loved a cherry vanilla ice cream cone. He was a hell of a storyteller and had a laugh that filled the room. Most importantly, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Kenneth is survived by his wife of 65 years, Jerie Reeves Newman; four children: Janice Caufield and her husband Ed, Robert Newman and his wife Susan, Nancy Newman, and Harry Newman and his wife Claire; 10 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

A celebration of Kenneth’s life will be held on Saturday, June 23.

Donations on his behalf may be made to the Orient Fire Department, the Orient Congregational Church, or the Oysterponds Historical Society.

This is a paid notice.

Alma Elizabeth Bishop Mihalik

Alma Elizabeth Bishop Mihalik was born March 15, 1921, in a house just north of the railroad tracks in Southampton, N.Y. When she was six, her family moved to a dairy farm, which her father later converted to a potato farm. Alma loved the freedom of farm life: climbing ropes, riding horses and riding outside next to her father.

After graduating from high school, she attended St. Lawrence University where she earned a degree in sociology. After St. Lawrence, she began working toward a graduate degree, but found she disagreed with the graduate school’s philosophy and methods. Consequently she left to begin work with the American Red Cross in Atlantic City, helping wounded veterans to readjust to civilian life. There she met and fell in love with Michael Mihalik, who was recuperating from injuries received in France. They were married in 1946.

While Mike attended Harvard University, Alma worked for the university library. Their first son, William, was born in Boston. They moved on to Columbia University where Mike received his master’s degree. He took a position with RCA and relocated to Camden, N.J., where their second son, Michael and daughter, Mary Ann, were born. Shortly thereafter, they moved to New Providence, N.J., where they lived and raised their family for over 30 years.

After Mike’s retirement from RCA, he and Alma returned to live on the family farm in Southampton. They lived there until 2002, when they relocated to Peconic Landing on the North Fork of Long Island.

Alma was forever ready for a new adventure, whether it was hunting for wild munchables in the woods or out-skiing a moose in a Alaska. Her love for her family and friends was without bounds. She believed in the fundamental goodness of life and radiated joy to those around her.

Alma was predeceased by her husband, Michael Mihalik; her son Michael Adams Mihalik; her brother, James Bishop and sister Helen Bishop White. She is survived by her sister Jane Bishop Seabury (Donald); her son William Mihalik (Sandra); her daughter, Mary Ann Mihalik Ward (Brian); her granddaughter Ariana Ward Jespersen (Steffen); her grandson, Michael Ward and her great-granddaughter, Ella Ward Jespersen.

A church service will be held in September 2018.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Peconic Land Trust, P.O. Box 1776, Southampton, NY 11969 or First Presbyterian Church of Southold, P.O. Box 787, Southold, NY 11971 would be appreciated by her family.
