Margaret Claire Pisani died peacefully May 12, 2019, surrounded by her family.

She is survived by her husband, Edwin; daughters, Genevieve and Emilia; son-in-law, Chris; and granddaughter, Vivian Margaret.

Margy was born Dec. 9, 1952, in Brookhaven, N.Y., and grew up in Patchogue and Jamesport, N.Y.

She graduated from The College of New Rochelle with a BA in studio art. She moved to Manhattan after college and married Ed in 1980. They moved to Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y., in 1984, where they raised their daughters before relocating to Margy’s dream home on the Peconic Bay in Laurel, N.Y.

A talented artist who successfully petitioned her high school to let girls take mechanical drawing and hand-illustrated her daughters’ paper lunch bags every day, Margy worked as a graphic designer before becoming a stay-at-home mom.

She was a gifted storyteller with a wild imagination, a quick wit and a passion for history and literature (Genny and Emilia grew up listening to her read T.S. Eliot and Dickens at bedtime). She could captivate a room with her vibrant personality, often breaking into a convincing Russian or Irish accent, and served as a confidante and counselor to many. She could also repair a carburetor, fold a fitted sheet, recite the Gettysburg Address from memory and soothe any crying baby. Her sense of direction was legendary.

Margy loved sailing, traveling the world with her beloved Ed, spending time at her house on the bay with friends and family, and speaking her mind about politics. Above all, she was a loyal, generous, funny and loving friend, wife, mom and aunt, and the world’s very best grandma.

The family will host a celebration of Margy’s life Friday, June 7, from noon to 4 p.m. at Tavern on the Green, 67th Street and Central Park West, New York, NY 10023.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the ACLU (aclu.org) or to support the breast cancer research of Dr. Linda Vahdat at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (mskcc.convio.net/goto/breastcancerresearch).

Checks, made payable to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, should be mailed to: Attn: Emily Carter, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Office of Development, P.O. Box 27106, New York, NY 10087. Please indicate on the check that the gift is in memory of Margy Pisani, to support the research of Dr. Linda Vahdat.

Ralph Louis Panella of Southold, N.Y., died May 14, 2019, at Stony Brook Hospital with his wife and two daughters at his side. He was 83 years old.

Ralph was born in the Bronx, N.Y. He was a seasonal Southold resident since 1972 and permanent resident since 2004, moving from Yonkers, N.Y.

He graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx and earned a B.S. degree from Pace University in New York City.

He was proud of his Bronx Italian heritage. You could often find him correcting your pronunciation of “espresso” while sipping on his specially ordered beans from Arthur Avenue in the Bronx.

Although he had been employed by IBM as an accountant, his joyful “work” was being a Mr. Fix-it, both at home and for family and friends. His face would light up when he could rise to the challenge of fixing something unfixable! Ralph also enjoyed boating and in recent years, remote sailboat racing.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elaine (nee Bergeron) of Bridgehampton; two daughters, Pia (Philip) Donovan and Gina Panella; and grandsons, Jack and Oliver Donovan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Constance (Rocciola) Panella, and his brother, John Panella.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and a member of the Italian-American Club.

Visitors were received May 19 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated May 20 at Saint Patrick R.C. Church in Southold — where he was a parishioner — officiated by Father John Barrett. Interment followed at the church cemetery.

LeRoy A. Paul
A birthday gift

I picked a rose, was pale in hue
Wet green grass, I did walk through
I laid it down upon your stone
You could say … your very own

I spoke of times that you did miss
Some of which were very bliss
I spoke of times I was in need
And my thoughts … that you should heed

I looked around, the sky was grey
Rain again was on its way
Casting silence upon the scene
A tranquil space … was so serene

The wind was still and made me think
If only once, I could blink
And bring the past back into view
The memories then … would all be new

Then I asked you, “How was heaven?”
“It is a place I shall get in?”
“Are they nice and treat you well?”
I spoke out loud … time will tell

I knew your ears were listening to
All that I was telling you
I knew your eyes were there to see
The only visitor … which was me

I never sat, the ground was wet
Was rain or tears, they both had met
I left the rose, your very own
A birthday gift … then I went home.
