Deane Knox Fox Jr.

Deane Knox Fox Jr. was born Dec. 14, 1935, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He passed away Dec. 3, 2018, after battling Alzheimer’s.

Deane, or “Skip,” as friends and family called him, grew up in Port Washington. He and his family spent most weekends and vacations in Orient sailing and playing a little tennis. His dad, Deane K. Fox Sr., was a founding member of Orient Yacht Club, where they spent time sailing and racing boats.

Skip attended Brown University and then moved to Houston, Texas, where he attended the University of Houston. There, he met his wife, Dorothy Witt, and they married in 1959.

Skip had a career in sales, including the insurance and plastics industries. His job took him and his family to California for seven years before transferring back to Texas. He retired in 2008. After retiring, he enjoyed volunteering at the YMCA, being with family and always sharing stories of his time sailing.

One of his favorite things he loved doing on his birthday was eating a big piece of chocolate layer cake with a glass of fat-free milk. Besides the love of sailing, he also enjoyed biking and cooking, specifically grilling, veggie shakes and always something “goopy goppy” for dessert.

He will be remembered by friends and family as a loving person with a feisty personality.

Deane was preceded in death by his father, Deane K. Fox Sr.; his mother, Georgia Case Fox; and his younger brother, George Fox.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy K. Fox; his daughters, Karen Tutt and her husband, Todd Tutt, and Jennie and her husband, Russell Marshall; his four grandchildren, Chance and Nicholas Tutt and Grant and Deane Marshall; his brother Stuart Fox and his wife, Cathie; and nephews Stuart Fox and George Fox. His other nephew, Bo Fox, joined him April 6.

We are saddened by Bo’s loss but comforted knowing they are together. Until we meet again, “Sail On!”

A graveside service will take place Friday, May 17, at 10 a.m. at Orient Central Cemetery. Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport is assisting the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the Phoenix Fox Foundation at phoenixfoxfoundation.com.

Franco G. Purita

Franco G. Purita, owner of D’latte Cafe in Greenport and a prolific Long Island restaurateur, has died at 53 after a months-long battle with cancer.

Mr. Purita, known as “Frank” to all who frequented any of his lively establishments, will leave a void in the hearts of so many. According to his daughter Gabriella, “The cancer progressed at a much faster pace than any of us had anticipated.”

Born in Calabria, Italy, and moving to America at age nine, Frank had a significant impact on the food and drinks scene on Long Island, stretching back to the early ’90s. Partnered with his wife, Claudia, he ran Veritage and Paradiso in Rockville Centre; La Serenata in Dix Hills and Oceanside; Radici in Carle Place, Cafe Mediterranean in Mattituck; Garden Gourmet Catering in Southold; and Sasuke and Biere in Greenport. An accomplished singer and guitarist, Frank opened The Half Note in 2018, a seasonal jazz cafe, while Claudia operated the award-winning One Woman Vineyard.

After Frank’s daughter Gabriella launched Taste of N.Y. in Grand Central Station, father and daughter collaborated on producing spirits at Greenport Distilling. He also worked alongside his other daughter, Maria, at D’latte Cafe. There, Maria developed her talents in baking, as Frank used local produce, such as goat’s milk, berries and peaches, and his own imagination, to produce gelato whose flavors followed the seasons. Always hatching brilliant ideas, then shepherding them into existence, Frank was a charismatic force whose life was dedicated to making people happy with food, wine and music.

Frank will always be remembered for his love of life. He could take an ordinary day and transform it into a magical event. A sentiment best captured in one of the many notes sent to him: “Dear Frank, I came in for a cup of coffee with my 82-year-old mom, and nine hours later, left with a memory that will last a lifetime.”

Frank Purita achieved many things in his short life, but his greatest achievement can be found in the giant hearts of his two daughters, Gabriella and Maria.

Frank is survived by his wife, Claudia; his daughters Gabriella and Maria; his parents, Fiorevanti and Maria Purita, of Baldwin; two sisters, Pasqualina DiCarlo of Baldwin and Virginia Scudder of Aquebogue; a brother-in-law, James Scudder; and nieces and nephews Romina, LaRossa, Fiorella DiCarlo, Matteo DiCarlo, Nicoletta DiCarlo, Peyton Scudder, Jake Scudder and Lucas Scudder.

Ann provided social change to law enforcement, domestic violence, protection for victims of many populations, as well as support and education of those afflicted with substance abuse. Her passion for education and literacy in children led to her desire to work with Our Lady of Mercy preschoolers in the community.
