The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 13, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Riverhead officiated by Pastor Bohdan Hadz.

Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Philip H. Fenderson of Mattituck died June 7. He was 86.

Marjorie Reese Ludlow

Marjorie Reese Ludlow died peacefully at her home in Bridgehampton June 6. She was 101.

Born Jan. 12, 1918, in Yonkers, N.Y., she was the daughter of Harriet and Arthur Reese, both of whom predeceased her.

She attended schools in Yonkers and was a graduate of Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., majoring in mathematics. Following college she worked at the Ethyl Corporation in the Chrysler Building in Manhattan, overlooking the East River.

During her childhood, her father built a cottage on Long Island Sound in Jamesport where the family spent summers. It was there that the Ludlow and Reese families met and, in 1948, she married Gurden Pierson Ludlow and moved to Bridgehampton.

She was quick to make friends and was a lovely hostess to gatherings of friends and family. She and Mr. Ludlow enjoyed ballroom dancing and were avid bridge players, a pastime she continued until recently. She was a quilter, a member of Hampton Choral Society, enjoyed opera and was an extraordinary cook. Family members note she was particularly happy to host dinner parties and always presented a glorious dessert. Mrs. Ludlow was physically active and walked daily, swam regularly and for many years attended yoga classes. She volunteered at the Southampton Hospital admissions office for 31 years, from which she retired in 2013. As an active member of Bridgehampton United Methodist Church, she sang in the choir and oversaw the locally acclaimed strawberry festivals and yearly turkey dinners.

Mrs. Ludlow was predeceased by her husband of 54 years in 2001; a brother, William H. Reese, in 2006; and a sister, Claire Reese Knight, in 2006. She is survived by four children, Claire L. Arnold (John) of Littleton, Colo., Harry S. Ludlow (Barbara) of Bridgehampton, Arthur R. Ludlow (Stacy) of Bridgehampton and Betsy L. Johnsen (Stuart) of Wilbraham, Mass.; six grandchildren, Nathan and Meredith Ludlow, Peter and John Ludlow, Sarah Johnsen MacMath (Keller) and William Johnsen (Elizabeth); and great-grandchildren Audrey Reese MacMath and Robert John MacMath.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Brockett Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at Bridgehampton United Methodist Church, 2247 Montauk Hwy., Bridgehampton, Tuesday, June 18, at 11 a.m.. with the Rev. W. Patrick Edwards officiating. Her grandson Peter Ludlow will be organist. Interment will follow at Mecox Cemetery in Bridgehampton.

Theodore H. Schroeder

Ted Schroeder of Southold died June 9. He was 90.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1929, Ted attended St. Edmund’s Grammar School, James Madison High School and graduated from Morrisville University in Morrisville, N.Y. He then served as a corporal in the Army Engineers, 529 Foundry.

After his military service, Ted owned and operated an excavation business with his brother George. He also worked as a long-shore fisherman and sea scalloper and then joined the IUOE Local 138 in Farmingdale, serving as a heavy equipment engineer for 13 years before he retired.

His hobbies included building model ships, attending Broadway shows, fishing, gardening and cooking for his family.

Ted was a founding member of the Tuesday Crew, a group of skilled volunteers who spent their Tuesdays restoring a 1906 tall ship, the Regina Maris, as well as building a replica of the 1870s Village Blacksmith shop in Greenport. As part of the team, Ted also helped with the restoration of Hallockville Museum Farm and repairs at the Animal Hospital in Hampton Bays, the Railroad Museums in Riverhead and Greenport as well as some of interior carpentry at the Southold Historical Society. “The crew was known as the ‘freelance do-gooders’ but Ted was even more known for fueling the team and the non-profits with his famous peanut butter-chocolate chip cookies,” according to a family statement.

He is predeceased by his wife, Karen; his brothers George and Robert; and his son John. He is survived by his five children Patricia, Teddy, Billy, Susan and Steven, and seven grandchildren. A private burial ceremony will take place at a later date.

Arrangements were in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

Ann Thornhill Felli

Ann Thornhill Felli, 86, formerly of Greenport, passed away in Bradenton, Fla., May 1, 2019.

She was born in Greenport Feb. 22, 1933, to Winifred (Gagen) and Harold (Major) R. Thornhill Sr.

She was predeceased by her husband, Armando Felli, and her sister, Barbara Thornhill Callaghan (Joe). She is survived by her daughter, Carol Arellano (Ruben) of Sarasota, Fla., and her son, James Felli of Brooklyn, N.Y. Also surviving Ann are her brothers, Frank J. Thornhill (Edy) of Port Jefferson Station and Harold R. Thornhill Jr. (Joan) of Glenville, N.Y.

Ann was a graduate of Greenport High School’s Class of 1950. She was a bookkeeper for the A&P grocery store in town for many years.

She married Al in December 1963 and moved to Islip Terrace, where she lived for 40 years. After Al’s death, she moved to Bradenton to be near her daughter and sister. Ann was a happy homemaker and loved being a mother who enjoyed baking. She always remembered to send birthday cards to everyone. Her talent was knowing family history and being able to connect our relationship to various relatives.

Ann was a woman of faith and was active in St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Islip Terrace and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Bradenton. She sang in the choirs in both parishes and took part in many other church-related activities.

The Heritage Park Care and Rehab Center in Bradenton was Ann’s home for the last several years of her life. She enjoyed many of the activities at the home, especially going on “field trips” to ball games and restaurants and bus rides to view Christmas decorations. She did not want to be a burden on anyone. Her mind remained sharp to the end. Ann had a beautiful smile and eyes that reflected her generous soul.

Ann was buried at Long Island National Military Cemetery in East Farmingdale next to Al, a World War II European Theater Army vet, on June 6, the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Patricia Brown Chamberlain, a former East Marion resident, died April 7, 2019, in Ocala, Fla.

She was born March 16, 1939, in Greenport, N.Y., to Elmina and Myron Brown.

Pat graduated from Greenport High School and Southampton Hospital School of Nursing.

She moved to Florida in the early 1960s to pursue her nursing and medical career. She retired from Humana in 1994 and moved to St. Francisville, La., to the Cottage Plantation, a family plantation operated by her brother, Harvey Brown. There she met and married Lawrence Chamberlain Jr. and they enjoyed 21 years of marriage. Due to health problems, they moved to Ocala in the fall of 2018 to be with Pat’s daughter, Wendy Melnyk, a nurse.

Pat is predeceased by her parents; her son, Mark Benson; her sister, Jean Ellen Dean (Raymond); and nieces Suzanne Brown and Ellen Brown Simons. She is survived by her husband; daughters Wendy Melnyk and Tracey Meltzer (Mike); her grandson, Mark Meltzer; her brother, Harvey Brown (Mary); her niece, Elizabeth Sandeman (Todd); stepchildren Karen Martin (Ron), Lawrence Chamberlain III (Yake) and Bruce Chamberlain (Angie); and her cat, Tiger.

A memorial service will be held at a future date.

Longtime Southold resident Ronald G. Dietrich, a local woodworker, avid fisherman and owner of Coastal Fishing Products, passed June 8, 2019, at the age of 63 at a nursing facility in Island Park, N.Y.

Mr. Dietrich was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Virginia Dietrich. He is survived by his two children, Nicole Dietrich of Southold and Ron Jr., of Milford, Conn., as well as his ex-wife, Wendy Normoyle of Connecticut.

As per his wishes, no services will be held.

Those who wish can make a donation to the Southold or Greenport fire department, who were there for many years with emergency services.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold is assisting the family.

Helen Alice Wolanski of Cutchogue died at her home June 15, 2019, at the age of 92.

Born Sept. 19, 1926, in Southold, N.Y., to Bertha Alice (Zielnecki) and Joseph Droskoski, she was a graduate of Southold High School’s Class of 1944.

She married Ted Wolanski Aug. 5, 1945, at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue and together they made their home in Southold for many years.

Helen had been a secretary and bookkeeper for Hazeltine and Hills Grocery Store and her final years were with the New York State Department of Labor’s unemployment division.

She was a communicant of St. Patrick’s R.C. Church and a past president of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Helen was predeceased by her husband April 5, 2004. She is survived by two daughters, Nancy J. Grigonis of Cordova, Md., and Linda A. Faszczewski of Cutchogue; three grandchildren, Amy Gammon, Lynelle Faszczewski and Shelly Leonard; and six great-grandchildren, Gayle, David, Ted, Pierce, Grace and Taylor.

She was predeceased by siblings John, Wesley, Vincent, Frank, Joe, Lucy and Millie and grandchildren Lara Grigonis and T.J. Grigonis.

Visitors will be received Wednesday, June 19, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Vera C. Smith

Vera C. Smith, a lifelong resident of Mattituck, died June 7 at East End Hospice Kansas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue. She was 92 years old.

She was born in Greenport Nov. 16, 1926, to Nicholas and Magdalene (Jacyszyk) Chudiak and was the valedictorian of the Mattituck High School’s class of 1944. She later graduated from SUNY Albany in 1948 with a degree in elementary and French education.

On Aug. 26, 1951, she married William A. Smith and together they made their home in Mattituck. She worked as a teacher for 22 years in the Riverhead Central School District.

In the community, she was active in the Literacy Volunteers of America where she taught English to immigrants for over 20 years. She was a member of Southold Homemakers and St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church.

Ms. Smith was predeceased by her husband March 26, 2019. She is survived by two children, Donna (John) Carbone of Cape May, N.J. and Thomas (Barbara) Smith of Mattituck; three grandchildren, John Carbone of Villas, N.J., Angela Smith of Washington, D.C. and Claire Smith of Mattituck; and two great-grandchildren, John Ryan and Declan, of Villas, N.J. She was also predeceased by four siblings, William Chudiak, Margaret Chudiak Stevens, Anne Chudiak McConnell and Agnes Chudiak Lindsay.

Visitors were received June 12 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home. The Divine Liturgy was celebrated June 13 at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church in Riverhead officiated by the Rev. Bohdan Hedz. Interment followed at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery.

Philip H. Fenderson

Philip H. Fenderson of Mattituck died June 7, 2019, at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 86 years old.

Born July 30, 1932, in Limerick, Maine, to Richard and Madeline (Sprague) Fenderson, he came to the North Fork when he was 17.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served honorably for 10 years.

Phil worked for many years in fire and rescue service at Grumman in Calverton.

In his free time, he enjoyed tinkering, hunting, trips to Foxwoods and Maine and his membership with American Legion Post No. 861.

His wife, Shirley, whom he married in 1955, predeceased him Jan. 24, 2019.

Surviving are his daughter, Jean Rivera (Frank) of Mattituck; two grandchildren, Frank Rivera (Amy) and Alicia Hughes (Jason); four great-grandchildren, Joshua, MacKenzie, Maci and Maverick; and a half-brother, Raymond Hill.

Visitors were received June 12 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Graveside services and interment took place June 13 at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Richard Francis Butler

Richard Francis Butler of Greenport died at home June 17. He was 81.

Mr. Butler was born Oct. 13, 1937, to Elizabeth Burke and Richard F. Butler in the Bronx.

He married his wife, Mary, May 5, 1979, at St. Elizabeth Church in Ridgewood, N.J.

Mr. Butler had a 34-year career with Verizon as a building manager in New York City. After retirement, he worked for NBC/GE for five years.

His family said he enjoyed fishing, hunting and golf and was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and Giants.

Mr. Butler was predeceased by his brother, Edward Butler, and a granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, who resides in Greenport; his daughter, Debbie SanPedro of Holbrook, N.Y.; his sisters Joan Hudak of Florida and Cathy Tielemans of New Jersey; and five grandchildren.

Visitors will be received Wednesday, June 19, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral Mass will take place Thursday, June 20, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, officiated by Fr. Richard Hoerning. The funeral home assisted the family with a private cremation.

Jane Constance Buckley Steinbugler

Jane Steinbugler, 87, of Southold, N.Y., died peacefully Sunday, June 16, 2019.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Jan. 28, 1932, to Katharine (Behan) and John J. Buckley, Jane was the fourth of nine children.

Jane attended high school at St. Angela Hall in Brooklyn where she starred on the basketball team. She studied for two years at Manhattanville College before she married Charles “Charlie” J. Steinbugler Jr. on Oct. 25, 1952, at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Brooklyn.

For over 45 years, Jane and Charlie made their home in Garden City, N.Y., where they raised six daughters. Jane returned to Manhattanville to complete her undergraduate degree in philosophy followed by her masters in education at Adelphi University. She taught English at West Hempstead High School for over 15 years and retired to spend time with her grandchildren in 1991.

After Charlie died in 1999, Jane moved to Southold where she had spent childhood summers in Beixedon and always considered home in her heart.

Jane was a calm, gracious, caring person of deep faith and inner strength. She enjoyed gardening, ice skating, yoga and other exercise classes, cooking, reading and her Bible study group. Most importantly, Jane loved spending time with her family and close friends, to whom she is very dear.

Jane is survived by her sister, Frances Buckley Little Soule; her six daughters Sara Jane (David Cordon), Elizabeth (Anthony J. Saltalamacchia), Kathryn, Mary Louise, Anne and Margaret Mary; and 11 grandchildren.

The family is very grateful to the staff at Senior Helpers, San Simeon and Eastern Long Island Hospital for the wonderful care and support they have recently provided.

Visitors will be received Tuesday, June 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home, 32470 Main Road, Cutchogue, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Wednesday, June 19, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church, 52125 Main Road, Southold, N.Y., followed by interment at Calverton National Cemetery.

Leon J. Jasinski Sr.

Leon J. Jasinski Sr. of Riverhead passed away June 17, 2019, at his home in Riverhead.He was born May 13, 1925, to Polish immigrants Aleksander and Helene (Skonieczny) Jasinski in Sagaponack, N.Y.

Leo attended Sagaponack School and Bridgehampton High School and in 1943, at the age of 18, joined the U.S. Army. After returning from Europe, he went back to the family farm and in his spare time played baseball, the sport he loved, with the Bridgehampton White Eagles.

In 1949, he married Theresa “Tweet” (Doroski) and moved to Riverhead to start and raise his family.

Employed with Grumman Aerospace for 33 years, he retired in 1984. A 64-year member and ex-captain of the Riverhead Fire Department Reliable Hose and Engine Co. No. 1, he was twice the recipient of the coveted Fireman of the Year award. A member of the lronman Racing team in his younger days, he was a lifelong follower. For 35 years he volunteered with fire prevention at local schools. He was also an active member of VFW Riverhead Post No. 2476 for 30 years.

An avid sportsman, he enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, darts and, most of all, baseball. Playing on numerous teams and in numerous leagues, his prowess on the diamond is well known.

Leo’s love of music preceded him. He loved to entertain his friends with his harmonicas, playing both harmonica and accordion his entire life learning to play music, especially polka music by ear and learning to read music in his 70s. From the Riverhead Fire Department Marching Band in the ’60s and ’70s to its short-lived revival in the past few years, he never gave up on it.

In addition to his wife, Leo was predeceased by his son Thomas in 2013; his brothers, Michael and Walter; and his sisters, Josephine Vinski, Stephanie Krasity and Louise Pietrewicz.
He is survived by his son Leon Jr. “Boots’’(Dawn); his daughter Barbara “Babs” Swislosky (Mike); his companion of 35 years, Julie Cooper and extended family; daughter Judy Doroski; granddaughter Julie; and “second daughter,” Sandra Blampied (Walt) of Middletown, N.Y. Other survivors include his grandchildren Brian, John (Melissa), Joseph (Sarah), Richard, Jaclyn, Jamie, Larissa, Joseph, Keith (Sharon), Jessica and Greg; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Visitors will be received Wednesday, June 19, from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday, June 20, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home, 336 Marcy Ave., Riverhead, N.Y. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, June 21, at the funeral home, followed by interment at St. Isidore Cemetery in Riverhead.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Gary R. Hotchkiss

Gary R. Hotchkiss of Southampton, formerly of Riverhead, died June 13. He was 64.

He was born May 15, 1955, to Milo Hotchkiss and Irene Wrublewski in Riverhead.

Mr. Hotchkiss graduated from Riverhead High School in 1973 and made a career as a corrections officer in Suffolk County.

He was a former member of Riverhead Fire Department Washington Engine Company #2 and enjoyed collecting police memorabilia and collecting guns.

Mr. Hotchkiss was predeceased by his parents and his brother Mark. He is survived by his brothers Bruce Hotchkiss of Cutchogue and Paul Leszczynski of Aquebogue.

Visitors will be received Tuesday, June 18, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home Wednesday, June 19, at 11 a.m. followed by interment at Riverhead Cemetery.

Joseph Szot Sr.

Joseph Szot Sr. of Riverhead passed away at home with his loving family at his side June 26. He was 92.

He was born March 10, 1927, to Albina Kalenko and Waldyslaw Szot in Poland.
Joseph was very young when his father died, leaving his mother with three young children. She later married Florian Sidorko, who helped raise the children.

During World War II Joseph was in the “Junaki,” a group of young men in training but not yet old enough for the Polish Army. He later served in the Army driving tanks through Egypt and Palestine. He spoke of riding a camel in Egypt and how beautiful Palestine was. After the war, he was sent to England.

In 1950, Joseph immigrated to the United States to join his mother and stepfather. After working for Suffolk Floors for several years, he started his own business called Custom Floors and Wall Coverings. Upon retiring from that, he was employed by Riverhead Nursing Home in the housekeeping department until retiring in 1994.

Joseph was a lifetime member and past director of the Riverhead Polish Independent Club.

In his younger years, he enjoyed soccer and bowling.
On Sept. 11, 1960, he married the love of his life, Dorothy Tyska. Together they shared the love of dancing, be it polka, waltz, lindy, etc., to line dancing and country wester — they did it all.

In addition to his loving wife of 58 years, he is survived by his devoted daughter, Cynthia Hodun (Mark); his devoted son, Joseph Jr. (Dawn); and grandchildren, Joseph Anthony Szot, Sara Krivan (Jon), Mark Hodun Jr. and Heather Hodun.

Also surviving are his sister, Jean Stasiukiewicz; sister-in-law Teresa Szot; brother, John Sidorko; sister-in-law Christine Sidorko; nephews Arek Szot, Chris Szot, and Mark Stasiukiewicz; and niece, Cathy Siravo.

Joseph was predeceased by his brother Tadeusz Szot and his nephews Frank Stasiukiewicz, Richard Szot and David Sidorko.

Visitors were received June 30 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral Mass took place July 1 at St. Isidore R.C. Church, officiated by Father Robert Kuznik. Interment followed at St. Isidore Cemetery.

Jeanette E. Swotkewicz of Aquebogue died July 1. She was 94.

She was born Jan. 30, 1925, to Alice Sepenoski and John Kruszeski in Aquebogue.

Ms. Swotkewicz graduated from Northville Elementary School in 1938, from Riverhead High School in 1942 and from Southampton School of Nursing in 1945. She later served in the Auxiliary Nursing Corps and married Frank Swotkewicz.

Ms. Swotkewicz’s nursing career included working at Central Suffolk Hospital, as a private duty nurse as a nursing home in Virginia and as a medical service specialist working with physically handicapped children.

She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society and enjoyed crocheting, cooking and baking and family gatherings.

Ms. Swotkewicz was predeceased by her husband and her daughter Theresa (Doroski) Bickell. She is survived by her children Walter (Brenda) Doroski, Charles (Annette) Doroski, Jeanette (Paul) Demchuk and Christopher (Desiree) Doroski; grandchildren Jacquelyn (Doroski) Price, Joshua Doroski, Victoria Ayers, Jordan Demchuk, Jason Doroski and Eric Doroski; and one great-grandchild, Warren Wood.

Visitors will be received Sunday, July 7, from 2 to 6 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Monday, July 8, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead, followed by interment at St. Isidore Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or East End Hospice.

Edith Kudlinski

Edith Kudlinski of Greenport died June 28 at San Simeon by the Sound Nursing Home. She was 92.

She was born Feb. 17, 1927, to Ethel (Griffing) and Garfield Klipp.

Ms. Kudlinski graduated from Greenport High School. She married Theodore “Mush” Kudlinski Sept. 27, 1945, in Greenport.

She volunteered with Mother’s Guild, at St. Agnes School, as a Cub Scout den mother and at San Simeon by the Sound for 25 years. Her family said she enjoyed crocheting, knitting, sewing, drawing and reading.

Ms. Kudlinski was predeceased by her husband in 1997. She is survived by her daughter, Joan Olszewski (Richard), and her son, Teddy Kudlinski (Terri); five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

A service will take place Wednesday, July 3, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 68465 Main Road, Greenport, followed by interment at Orient Central Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Garret Johnson.

Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport assisted the family.

Frances Catania DiVello of Mattituck, former proprietress of Porto Bello restaurant in Greenport, died July 1. She was 84.

Visitors will be received Tuesday, July 2, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 3, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. Interment will follow at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.
