Carolyn grew up in Bayside, New York, graduated from Bayside High School in 1944 as World War II was underway. During her high school years, she volunteered as an air raid warden helping her neighbors learn about proper procedure for blackouts and what to do if an air raid were to occur. Once graduated from high school, she worked as a secretary for various businesses in New York City including Women’s Day Magazine.

Carolyn met her husband, Thomas Hugh Murray, also from Bayside, after he returned in 1946 having served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific. They married on Nov. 29, 1952 at Blessed Sacrament Church in Bayside, New York. They moved to New Jersey and raised their family of six children in Montville, N.J. They enjoyed family pop-up trailer camping throughout New England, New York and Pennsylvania. Carol and Tom began vacationing in Greenport in the 1970s.

Carolyn enjoyed being around others and always looked at the bright side of life. You would find her dancing throughout her 98 years, as she was especially known for her tap dancing. She entertained many into her late 80s tap dancing at family events.

In the winter months, she spent many years working at the Barn Theatre in Montville, N.J. doing backstage and onstage work. She enjoyed being the props manager for many of their shows. She was awarded The Gaffney Award for Outstanding Service from the Barn Theatre.

In the summers, while living in Greenport, she was a member of the Regina Maris Foundation, that was dedicated to the restoration of the Regina Maris, a three-masted barquentine schooner ship docked in Greenport Harbor. She loved going to Sixth Street beach to swim and to watch the sunsets. She attended mass each Sunday at Church of Saint Agnes in Greenport and enjoyed being in their September variety shows dancing on stage and helping with backstage work.

Carolyn is survived by her daughters Joyce Sullivan (Neil) of Yonkers and Greenport, Lynn Rodriguez (Carl) of Glen Mills, Pa., Judy Ackerman (Donald) of Naples, Fla., Colette Fricchione (Tony) of New Tripoli Pa., and her son, Michael Murray of Parsippany, N.J.

Rosa Maria deCarvalho Ross

Our beautiful mother, Rosa Maria deCarvalho Ross, passed away peacefully at her home in East Marion, surrounded by family and friends, on June 28, 2024.

She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her friends from around the globe are too many to name, including the countless people she mentored, young and old, in every phase of her life. Her door
was always open for advice, gossip and late night revelry.

Rosa was born to a prominent Macanese family in Hong Kong on Aug. 30, 1937. Her childhood
with her five siblings was boisterous and happy, though certainly marred by WWII and the invasion
of Hong Kong by Japanese forces. As a young secretary working for BOAC she met the love of
her life and future husband, Ron Ross. They eloped to London, married in a registry office (or so
they claimed, but never really confirmed!) and thus began a life of travel and adventure.
By the time they settled in New York City in 1977, they had lived in Milan, Caracas, Los Angeles and
Boston.
While living in Italy as a young bride Rosa learned to cook from her friend Marcella Hazan. Her
talent and passion for cooking was revealed and the rest is history. Rosa was a cook, teacher,
cookbook author, caterer and restaurateur in a career that spanned 50 years. She was a
founding member of the Women’s Culinary Alliance and the James Beard Foundation and one
of the first teachers at Peter Kump’s NY Cooking School, later to become the Institute of
Culinary Education. None of these accomplishments prevented her from making astonishingly
delicious dinners for her family every single night, a tradition we were never tempted to break.
At the time of her death she was working on two books and ordering her daughters around from
her arm chair as they cooked for her.
Ron and Rosa’s second home in East Marion was a source of joy and they eventually retired
there. Retirement for Rosa meant opening a restaurant in 2005 at the age of 68. Scrimshaw
was a great success and a lifelong dream realized. She and Ron embraced their North Fork
community and were loved in return. Their final years by the sea were happy times full of family
gatherings and delicious food. We will miss her forever.
Rosa is survived by her daughters Sarah and Samantha; her grandchildren Clara and Renaldo;
sons-in-law, siblings, nieces and nephews. A service is planned for the fall of 2024.

Audrey M. Norris, née Atherton, was born in Ozone Park, N.Y., on July 30, 1925. She met the love of her life, William G. “Bill” Norris, while he was assigned to commission the “Bon Homme Richard.” They had an extraordinary life. She passed on June 30, 2024, to rejoin Bill.

There will be a celebration of life at Northwood Church, 1200 University Blvd. West, in Silver Spring, Md., at 11 a.m. on Sept. 21, 2024. Contributions to the church may be made in Audrey’s memory.

Audrey is survived by three children: Bill (Debbie) Norris, Jeri (Mike) Rhodes, and Sandi (Kent) Roddy. Her son Bob was predeceased. She leaves 13 grandchildren: Eryka, Ed, Robby, Melanie, Greg, Jill and Brad Norris, Mae and Carrie Miklos, Jeff Waid, Kent Roddy, Matt and Keith Rhodes, and nine great-grandchildren.

Audrey joined Bill on his return from the Pacific to complete his Navy service in Argentina, Newfoundland, and then moved to Lewiston, Maine, for college years. Following Bill’s graduation, they embarked on a life of voyages to antique lands, living in Nicosia, Cyprus; Cairo, Egypt; and Tehran, Iran, before an epic drive with four children and a large dog from Tehran to Hamburg, Germany. Following several years living in Lagos, Nigeria, the family moved to Paris, France. After Bill’s retirement, they settled on the North Fork of Long Island, where Audrey hunted scallops from “Bay Scallop,” and grandchildren learned to sail.

After Bill’s death, Audrey moved to Silver Spring. She continued her commitment to volunteer work, which included management of an orphanage in Tehran and supervision of hospital volunteers in Greenport, with blind services at Kennedy Center. Not all of her life was peaceful. In a single year, Audrey moved from Lagos, to return to Tehran, where Bill was declared unwelcome. The family moved briefly to Geneva, Switzerland, and then to Paris. All her household effects were stored in a crate for the year and destroyed by tropical rainwater. Audrey recovered and rebuilt.

Audrey held her family together with an indomitable will. She was a compassionate and generous friend, loved by many, and her independent spirit is a beacon to all.
