Michael Anthony Carbone

Michael Anthony Carbone of Cutchogue, and formerly of Manhattan and Southold, passed away at home on Monday, May 13, 2024. He was 79 years old.

Michael was born on Dec. 8, 1944 in New York, N.Y. to Antoinette (née Scelzi) and Anthony Carbone. He was one of four children. He graduated from Queens Vocational High School in Sunnyside, Queens. After high school he enlisted with the U.S. Army and served for two years during the Vietnam War attaining the rank of Specialist E-4. On Oct. 19, 1994 he married Ellen Marie (née Crecca) Carbone in New York, N.Y. They lived in Manhattan and built their summer home in Southold in 2004, commuting from Manhattan to Southold on weekends. They retired to Southold full time in 2021, and eventually made their home in Cutchogue.

In his professional career, Michael worked as a plumbing contractor and owned and operated MJM Plumbing in New York, N.Y. He was a member of the Italic Studies, Tiro-A-Segno, New York Athletic Club and Mercy Home.

Predeceased by his parents; Michael is survived by his wife Ellen Marie; children Michael Jr. (Elizabeth) of Pawtucket, RI and John (Alison) of Pound Ridge, N.Y.; grandchildren Nicolas, Farrah, Isabella, Dylan and David; and siblings Peter (Carol) of Bayville, N.Y., Maria (Willliam) of Bayville, N.Y. and Anthony (Ermis) of Bayville, N.Y.

The family received friends Sunday, May 19 at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, May 20 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, officiated by Father Michael Bartholomew. Interment with U.S. Army Honors followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Wounded Warriors Project would be appreciated.

Daniel James Konarski

Daniel James Konarski of Hampton Bays, and formerly of Mattituck, passed away on Monday, May 27, 2024. He was 41 years old.

Daniel was born on June 6, 1982 in Riverhead to Barbara A. (née Mulrain) and Michael A. Konarski. He graduated from Mattituck High School with the class of 2000. On April 21, 2013 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, Daniel married the love of his life Natasha N. (née Farnsworth) Konarski. Together they made their home in Hampton Bays.

He was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church. In his professional career, Daniel worked as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Peconic for 14 years.

Daniel is survived by his wife Natasha; parents Barbara and Michael of Mattituck; siblings Stephanie Konarski of Mattituck and Kyle Konarski (and his fiancé Stephanie Dellasperanzo) of Riverhead; grandmothers Dorothy Konarski of Cutchogue and Dorothy Mulrain of Riverhead; in-laws Michael and Kim Farnsworth; sister-in-law Lisa Farnsworth; niece Juliana Panero; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family will receive friends on Friday, May 31 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the DeFriestGrattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, June 1 at 9:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, officiated by Father Michael Bartholomew. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre R.C. Cemetery in Coram.

In lieu of flowers, donations to East End Hospice would be appreciated. Envelopes will be
available at the funeral home.

Joseph Barszczewski of Greenport died May 29, 2024. He was 86.

The family will receive friends Monday, June 3 from 3 to 7 p.m. with firematic service at 6:30 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greeenport. A funeral mass is scheduled for Tuesday, June 4 at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes R.C. Church and will be followed by burial.

Anna M. (Nancy) McAllister

Nancy McAllister (née Bernert) passed away May 31 at age 87 in Jamesport after a yearlong battle with pancreatic cancer.

Nancy was born on Jan. 28, 1937, and was raised in Flushing. She graduated from Dominican Commercial High School and worked in New York City as an executive secretary. She was later employed as an engineering aid at Sperry Corporation while attending night school at St. John’s University.

Nancy met her husband, Jim, at a holiday party four days after his discharge from the U.S. Army. They married one year later in 1958. Jim and Nancy raised their family in Levittown, and later in Port Jefferson Station. After helping Jim attain his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, Nancy returned to school at night, at Suffolk Community College, Stony Brook University, and Dowling College, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees of her own.

Nancy taught in Middle Country, Comsewogue and Greenport school districts. Upon her retirement, she taught at a substance abuse awareness program in Riverhead School District, mentored ESL students at Riverhead Library, and volunteered at Southold Historical Museum’s Horton Point Lighthouse.

In 1998, Nancy and Jim moved to Jamesport and spent winters in Vero Beach, Fla. Nancy took up golf, tennis, bocce, shuffleboard, along with mahjong. An avid reader, she shared her many favorite books with her grandchildren and others.

She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, James M. McAllister, Sr., their seven children, 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, June 4, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck.

The liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, June 5, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck.

She will be laid to rest following Mass at Calverton National Cemetery.

In lieu of sending flowers or gifts, the family requests donations to a cancer research organization.

Edward Daily Cahoon Booth

Edward Daily Cahoon Booth passed away on May 21, 2024. He was 97 years old.

Ed was born on May 19, 1927, in New York City to Edna (nee Cahoon) and Clement W. Booth. He attended elementary school in Southold. After graduating from Phillips Exeter Academy Ed served in the U.S. Navy.  He received a bachelor’s degree from Princeton University before earning a doctorate in physics from Johns Hopkins University.

Ed married Patrica Shannon in 1952.  He taught physics at Boston University from 1956 to 1996. He also did research at the MIT/Bates Linear Accelerator from 1996 to 2002. After retirement he served on the Board of the Southold Free Library in Southold. He was an active member of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Greenport and the First Universalist Church of Southold.

Ed enjoyed sailing, ice skating and hiking and loved his many dogs.

Predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Patricia and his brother, Clement W. Booth Jr., Ed is survived by his children Edward (Christine) Booth Jr. of Bucksport, Maine, Michael Booth of Southold, Margot Booth of Peconic, Katherine Booth of Millis, Mass.; his grandchildren, Anna (Sarah) Cohen and Rosalie Cohen; and great-grandchild Clara Cohen.

A joint memorial is planned for Aug. 17 at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Greenport.  Donations may be made to the First Universalist Church of Southold or the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Greenport.

Cortland B. Brooks

C.B. was born in Greenport on July 5, 1944 to Frank F. and Alice (Rogers) Brooks. He passed away May 2, 2024 in Coos Bay, Ore. at the age of 79.

C.B. graduated from Greenport High School, class of 1963. He attended Delhi Ag. & Tech., in Delhi, N.Y. for two terms and then decided that the Air Force was better suited for him. He enlisted Nov. 2, 1964 and retired July of 1985 with the rank of E-6, Technical Sergeant. While in the Air Force, he was assigned to Tempelhof Air Base in Berlin, Germany, Mount Hebo Air Force Station (twice) in Hebo, Ore., San Vito Air Force Station, Brindisi, Italy and Beale Air Force Base in Marysville, Calif. He was married to Stephanie Elbers and divorced in 1980. C.B. married the love of his life, Maryon (Boles) Sigman in 1983. C.B. worked for the U.S. Civil Service (Air Force) from 1986 to 2006.

C.B. was initiated into the Masonic Fraternity in 1968 in Berlin, Germany. He was a past master of John L. Mclellan No. 780, Brindisi, Italy Unity Lodge No. 18, Ogden, Utah, North Bend Lodge No. 140, North Bend, Ore., and Blanco Lodge No. 48, Coos Bay, Ore. He was a member of the York Rite Bodies (past grand high priest, illustrious grand master and grand commander), Scottish Rite (33 degree), Red Cross of Constantine, Holy Royal Arch Knights Templar Priests, Knight York Cross of Honor, Allied Masonic Degrees, Shrine and the Order of Eastern Star. He was also a life member of V.F.W. and American Legion.

C.B. is survived by his sister, Francis (Brooks) Franke of New York; daughter Jennifer Brooks and her husband Chris of Coos Bay; daughter Christine (Brooks) Czogalla of Berlin, Germany; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; step-daughters Lisa (Sigman) Cozza and her husband Scott and Valerie Sigman; two nieces and three nephews; 12 great-nieces and nephews; and four great-great nieces and nephews.

C.B. was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Alice Brooks; his sister Alice Brooks; and his wife, Maryon Brooks in 2021.

Following a tribute to his life with a Masonic ceremony, military flag honor and a 21-gun salute, he was privately interred in Coos Bay, Ore.

James (Jay) Buscemi

James (Jay) Buscemi of Laurel, died on May 29, 2024 after battling cancer. 

Jay was a beloved husband and father, adored brother and grandfather and treasured friend. Jay was an electrical engineer at AIL for many years, an avid ham radio operator and active member of the Peconic Radio Club. 

Jay is survived by his wife Loretta; daughter Michelle; son Matt; sister Pam and four grandsons Michael, Daniel, Blake and Drew. 

To honor his wishes there will be no wake or services, and the family will have a celebration of Jay’s life at a later date. Memorial donations made to East End Hospice or the Mattituck Fire Department would be appreciated.

Charles Albert Cardona Jr.

Charles A. Cardona Jr., 86, of Anderson, S.C., formerly of Southold, who was born March 14, 1938, in Queens, N.Y., passed away May 16, 2024. 

Preceding him in death was father, Charles Cardona Sr., and mother, Genevieve Cardona; also his wife, Valerie K. Cardona (May 11, 2014). He is survived by four sons: Charles Cardona III (Kristin) of Anderson, Peter Cardona (Susan) of Hollywood, Md., John Cardona (Ursula) of Aquebogue and Michael Cardona of Anderson; grandsons Catlin Cardona (Kaise) of Kingsland, Ga., Christopher Cardona, Nicholas Cardona and Matthew Cardona, all of Anderson, Cordell Cardona of Hollywood, Md.; granddaughter Danielle Oliveras of Aquebogue; and great-grandson Dallas Cardona of Kingsland. He is also survived by his brother, John Cardona of Bayport.

Charles was a dedicated husband, father and friend. He served in the U.S. Army National Guard from 1963 to 1966. After 36 years of working as a music teacher, he retired from Riverhead High School. Since retiring, you could always find him smiling as he worked on his model railroad. He enjoyed spending most of his time with his family that he adored. He was a kind man and always valued hard work and commitment.

Family will receive friends for Charles’ service Friday, June 21, at noon at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue. Interment to follow.

Donations in memory of Charles may be made to Custer Institute and Observatory, P.O. Box 1204, Southold, NY 11971 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Arrangements are in the care of DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.

Robert A. Lott Jr.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Robert A. Lott Jr., son of Robert Lott Sr. and Julia Lott of Southold.

Beloved father, friend and husband. He passed peacefully June 9, 2024. He was 57 years old. He was an avid car lover, Star Wars Jedi and KISS fanatic. He was a 1985 Southold High School graduate.

He leaves behind his three children Jessica, Alexander and Jonathon Lott; and wife of 35 years, Donna Lott; five dogs, four cats and a 30-plus year career at Mullen Motors in Southold. He was hardworking, smarter than a computer and stubborn as hell. He will be greatly missed by all who got to know and love him. May the force be with you, Rob. 

The family asks in lieu of flowers a donation in Rob’s honor be made to Southold school’s NJROTC Program or the North Fork Animal Welfare League.

Private services will be held at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Thursday June 13. A public celebration of life will be held at Mullen Motors Friday June 14 at 4 p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Robert W. Wendell

Robert W. Wendell, longtime Southold resident, passed away at home on Wednesday, June 12, 2024. He was 96 years old.

Robert was born on July 20, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Olga C. (née Nothel) and Louis P. Wendell. He was one of two children. He graduated from Oceanside High School with the class of 1945. After high school he enlisted with the U.S. Coast Guard. From there he went on to attend Franklin & Marshall College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1950. He continued with OCS school at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and graduated in 1952. He served the U.S. Coast Guard as an Officer for five years, two and a half of which were active duty. He was on a ship in the North Atlantic shipping lanes, and served on Ellis Island as well.

On June 7, 1952, he married the love of his life, Jean (née Schrott) Wendell, and together they had two children. Robert and Jean Ann came to Southold in the early ‘70s, then retired to Maine in 1995, eventually returning to Southold to be near their daughter Kim and son-in-law Dan.

In his professional career, Robert worked as a self-employed builder, owning and operating Winds Way Building. He was proud of all his years as a Jones Beach lifeguard and love of the outdoors.

Predeceased by his sister Jeanne Davies and great-granddaughter Morgan West, Robert is survived by his wife, Jean; son Douglas Wendell of Southold; daughter Kim West (Dan) of Southold; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. 

The family has chosen to remember Robert’s life privately. DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold is assisting the family.

Albin Joseph Zaweski

Albin Joseph Zaweski went home to the Lord on June 5, 2024, surrounded by his family.

Albin was born Dec. 18, 1939, to the late Stanley and Bertha Zaweski of Jamesport. After the death of his father, when Albin was 10 years old, he began farming with his two brothers and mother until he retired.

Albin was an avid sports enthusiast and played school football at Riverhead High School. After graduation, he began volunteering at the Jamesport Fire Department, where he spent the next 52 years helping those in need.

At a local dance he met Roberta Doroski and they began dating. They married in 1965. Albin is survived by his wife, Roberta, his daughter, Laura Sacks, and grandson, Shane Sacks.

When Albin retired, he and his wife moved to the family home in Florida where he spent the rest of his days playing golf and fishing with his grandson and friends until he passed.

Albin was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends that have survived him.

Keri Astri Torkelsen Rodney

Keri Astri Torkelsen Rodney passed away on Feb. 28, 2024, at the age of 31, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on Nov. 7, 1992 in Southold, to Betty Ann Torkelsen. On Sept. 4, 2018 she married her best friend and the love of her life Joseph Rodney. They made their home in Shirley with their blended family of six children.

Following in the footsteps of her grandfather, Keri worked with her husband Joe in construction. It’s no wonder that she built little birdhouses in our souls. She was a strong, caring, and vivacious woman. Her catch phrase was “I’ll be your friend!” Keri was the life of every party. Her smile could light up an entire room. She kept her sense of humor and positive attitude to the very end.

Surviving are her devoted husband Joseph Rodney; her children: Cassandra Torkelsen, Kayleigh Rodney, Alice Rodney; her step-children: Gabrielle Rodney, Joseph Rodney Jr., and Tracy Rodney. She was predeceased by her mother Betty Ann Torkelsen, sister Daria Okrasinski, and grandparents Lars and Astri Torkelsen.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sat., July 20 at 10 a.m. at the Mattituck Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. James Cubie officiating the service, followed by a brunch reception in the social hall. All who loved Keri are welcome to attend.

Franklin Arthur Scholl Sr.

On June 17, 2024 Franklin Arthur Scholl Sr. originally from Mattituck, passed away at the young age of 90. He was surrounded by his family and those that loved him.

He left behind his wife Margaret Ann Scholl; and his children Franklin Jr., Barbara, Phillip, Steven, Katherine, Madeline, Edward, John and LauraBeth, and his nephew Ernest along with 19 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was a hard worker with his father at the Hampton Bays Supply Co. for many years. He loved to see the world and lived for a time in Georgia, Paraguay and Florida. He will be missed.

Adrienne T. Garcia of Greenport died June 12, 2024, at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital. She was 75.

Born in Brooklyn, July 1, 1948, she was the daughter of Carmine LaBrocco and Catherine Massa. 

She worked as a token booth clerk for the New York City Transit Authority in Brooklyn for 20 years. She was a member of Carenet Pregnancy Center and First Baptist Church in Greenport and enjoyed painting and reading.

Predeceased by her husband, Carlos Garcia, she is survived by her three daughters, Theresa Kennedy (Scott) of Brooklyn, Delilah Ali (Syed) of Nanuet and Gloria Dinizio (John) of Greenport; nine grandchildren: Carlos Ali (Brett Wiggins), Sean Kennedy (Beth Pengler), Danielle Ali, Joli Valdes, Brandon Ali, Tabina Smiley (Tyrus), Grace Dinizio (Nate Barsczewski), Taylor Dinizio (Divine Braithwaite) and AJ Dinizio; great-grandchildren Bryson, Riley, Everlee, Colton and Jackson; and siblings Larry LaBrocco, Barbara Maniscalco, Ida Swindasz and Donna LaBrocco.

The family received visitors June 15 at First Baptist Church in Greenport.

Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport assisted the family.

Harry Pumillo

Harry Pumillo, 85, longtime North Fork resident passed a few days shy of his 86th birthday on the morning of June 25, 2024.

Harry was survived by his daughter Cheryl Vasilakos; son-in-law Van; granddaughter Denise (Bruce); and third great-grandchild Brendan; his daughter-in-law Cindy, who was married to his son Gary who passed away in Feb. 2019; his two grandsons Kyle Pumillo (Jess) and first and second great-grandchildren Ryan and Kali; and Kevin Pumillo (Alexandra).

Harry’s wife Barbara passed away in May of 2009. Over the years Harry enjoyed time spent with his family and playing cards with friends and going out to eat. Harry was the original owner of Fisherman’s Rest, who was known for his famous thin crust pizza. He will be missed so very much but his family finds comfort in knowing that he will be with his wife and son again.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Lifelong Southold resident David M. Ostroski passed away on Friday, June 28, 2024. He was 62 years old.

David was born on April 6, 1962, in Greenport, to Florence A. (née Pilles) and Leroy S. Ostroski. He was one of three children. He graduated from Southold High School. In his professional career, he worked as a self-employed carpenter.

Predeceased by his parents, David is survived by his children, Marc Ostroski of Shirley and Zach Ostroski (Brigette) of Southold and siblings Debra Ostroski of Southold and Leroy “Butch” Ostroski of Southold.

All are welcome to attend graveside services, which will be held on Tuesday, July 9, at 10 a.m. at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery in Southold, where David will be laid to rest alongside his parents.
