Our loving mother and “Mema,” Mary Ann Tamborello of Southold, formerly of Medford, N.Y., passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Feb. 15, 2024. Mary was blessed to live a long, full life of 94 years.

Born on Aug. 29, 1929, Mary was one of nine children of the late Patrick and Julia Gibbons (née Conroy). She shared often the fond memories she had of her early childhood and teen years spent on the farm with her grandmother as well as parents and siblings in Ireland.

In her early 20s, Mary emigrated from Ireland to the United States. It was there that she met and fell in the love with Joseph L. Tamborello. The young couple wed on Oct. 20, 1956. Together Joseph and Mary purchased a home in Medford, where they remained to raise their three children, Susan, Joseph and Thomas. Mary found her true calling in life as a mother and even more so when she experienced the joy of becoming a grandmother. Selfless but strong, Mary instilled in her children and grandchildren the importance of grace, kindness and faith. Even through trial and tribulation, she persevered with strength and a positive attitude.

She volunteered much of her time as support staff of the Guidance Center Prevention Program for teens and preteens. Her faith in God and her gentle soul led her to be the pillar of strength and wisdom to so many. She was always there to lend a listening ear and to remind whomever may need to hear it that they were not alone.

If you were blessed enough to have spent time with Mary, then you knew she was the light in our darkness, right up until her last moments. She was the true definition of the “matriarch” and served as the glue that held her family together. She was loved by many, and will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her wisdom and her ability to make everyone feel appreciated and loved.

Mary joins in heaven her beloved husband, Joseph L. Tamborello, her loving son Joseph M. Tamborello Sr. and seven of her nine siblings. She is survived by her two devoted children Susan Tamborello Toman (Bobby) and Thomas Tamborello (Sophie); seven adored grandchildren, Heather Rio (Joseph), Joseph M. Tamborello Jr., Robert Keith Toman, Liam Toman, Devin Toman, Zoe Tamborello and Delphine Tamborello; and great-granddaughter Hazel Rio. She also leaves to cherish her memory her dear sister Bridget Tierney; godchildren Maureen Tierney-Costello, George Tamborello and Ronald Tamborello; and in-laws George and Mary Jane Tamborello and Jeanette and Tom Gioulos. She will be forever loved and remembered by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and nephews and great-grand nieces and nephews extending from Australia, Ireland and England.

Her legacy of love and devotion will live on in the countless lives she touched. Visitation for Mary Tamborello took place Feb. 18 at Robertaccio Funeral Home in Patchogue. A funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 19 at St. Sylvester R.C. Church in Medford. She was laid to rest alongside her husband at Calverton National Cemetery.

Bernard Arthur Heaney, 94, joined his loving wife, Maria, sons Timothy, Shawn, Kerry, his granddaughter Michelle Farruggia and daughter-in-law Laura Heaney Goff, into the loving hands of God on Monday, Feb. 12, 2024, at Center for Hope Hospice, in Scotch Plain, N.J.

Bernard is survived by his devoted daughter Maria T. Heaney O’Callaghan (Bernard). He is also survived by his grandchildren Jamie Heaney Lanier, Kerri Heaney Hurst, Timothy Heaney (Alexis), Sean Heaney (Taylor), Robert Farruggia (Zylona), Shannon Mellas; his great-grandchildren Teresa, Zandy, Weston, Scarlett, Ford, Elsie Mae and Jackson; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Bernard was born in Greenport, on April 12, 1929, the son of William and Julia (McCaffrey) Heaney. He graduated from Greenport High School in 1948. During this time there he played football on a semi-pro team before being drafted into the Army in 1950. Bernard served on the front lines during the Korean War with the 1st Cavalry as relief on Pork Chop Hill. When he returned home after being honorably discharged, he enrolled in Harper College for Business and accounting using the GI Bill. It was here that he met the love of his life, Maria Mazzocchi. Together they raised four children in Greenport, before retiring to Pine Plains, N.Y. They shared 69 years together.

Bernie had many jobs in his lifetime. He worked shucking oysters, was a dockworker, a deckhand on fishing boats, and also worked building boats in the local boatyard on Carpenter Street for the war effort before he was drafted. After moving back to Greenport to raise his family he secured a job working on a dredge for Suffolk County for nearly 15 years. He then worked for many years as a mechanical and electrical engineer with Suffolk County Community College until his retirement in 1994. On weekends he worked building docks for nearly 20 years alongside his sons.

His son Kerry and his grandchildren Tim and Sean have carried on the dockbuilding legacy. Bernie was a volunteer fireman with the Village of Greenport Fire Department, where he served as captain and other various offices throughout his years of service for the Relief Hose Company. He became a pyrotechnician for Grucci fireworks, which was a highlight in his life. He also was a fire inspector for the Village of Greenport for a number of years before retiring and moving upstate to Pine Plains.

Bernard and Maria were active in both St. Agnes Parish in Greenport and St. Anthony’s Church in Pine Plains. At St. Agnes he taught catechism classes, served as an usher and reader, was a coach and mentor for Catholic youth groups. He was also a member of the Pine Plains Lions Club.

Bernie was a gifted athlete and an avid sports fan. He took great pride in all his children’s athletic accomplishments, especially his sons’ wrestling. He attended every match and became a wrestling dad to many of the others on the team. He could be heard from the bleachers cheering all the wrestlers on and sometimes challenging the refs’ calls with his famous line, “Come on ref! What are you, blind?!”

Family was important to Bernie, as was his family history. He could often be found telling stories of days gone by to family, friends or even complete strangers. Once you were a friend of Bernie’s, it was for life. His mind was sharp and remained that way until the end, which allowed for his continued socializing and reminiscing. He adored his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren and was happy to spend as much time as possible with them. He also enjoyed playing cards.

In addition to his wife, children, grandchildren and daughter-in-law, Bernard was also predeceased by his siblings; Mary, William, James, Joseph, Bernadette, Julia, John and Jerome.

Calling hours were held on Feb. 18 at Peck & Peck Funeral Home in Pine Plains, N.Y. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Anthony’s R.C. Church in Pine Plains, with the Rev. William White as the officiant. Interment followed in Evergreen Cemetery.

Thomas P. Grattan Sr., a lifelong resident of Southold, passed away peacefully Feb. 13, 2024. He was 80 years old.

Born Nov. 17, 1943, in Greenport to Gertrude (Kenna) and Joseph S. Grattan Sr., Tom was a 1961 graduate of Southold High School. In the years following graduation, he joined the Army National Guard and was later employed by Agway Petroleum from 1964 to 1969. On Jan. 7, 1968, he married Dale Quillin at St. Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold.

On Jan. 19, 1970, Tom joined the Suffolk County Sheriffs’ Department and held the title of correction officer until his retirement on Sept. 29, 1995. Tom was an honorary member of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association up until his passing. In addition to his years as a correction officer, Tom continued to work part-time for Agway Petroleum and was always willing to assist others, therefore always having multiple side jobs, as sitting idle was not part of his work ethic.

He was member of the Southold Fire Police, and he served as a district commissioner of the Southold Fire Department starting in 2004, remaining a vital and integral district commissioner right up until his passing. Additionally, Tom was a delegate for the North Fork Volunteer Fireman’s Association.

A member of St. Patrick’s R.C. Church since a young age, Tom was devoted and faithful. The values bestowed upon him through his religion and parish transformed him into the kindhearted, humble man that he was. Always willing to serve his parish, Tom was a familiar face at Sunday Mass, where he served as an usher.

Tom’s family was his greatest pride. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. The unending support that he showed when his own children were small is what led him to be a former president of both the North Fork Little League Association and the Southold High School Athletic Association.

Tom is predeceased by his parents, Joseph S. Grattan Sr. and Gertrude Kenna Grattan. He is survived by his wife, Dale; son Thomas P. Grattan Jr. (Carrie) of Peconic; daughters Carolee Behr (Larry) of Cutchogue, and Kimberly A. Mele (Frank) of Southold; grandchildren Thomas J. Behr, Julia L. Mele, Jessica K. Mele and Thomas P. Grattan III; siblings Joseph S. Grattan Jr., Madeline G. Altadonna, Paul D. Grattan Sr., and Philip E. Grattan Sr.

Feb. 28, 1931 – Feb. 6, 2024

Raymond Thomas MacLean made his appearance in this world on Feb. 28, 1931, in East New York, Brooklyn. At the age of 5, he moved to Bellport, with his loving parents, Raymond and Jessie MacLean. Ray, an only child, grew up surrounded by beloved aunts, uncles and cousins. He shared special bonds with his cousins, Ruth, Ed, Charlie and Billy, and loved them like siblings.

At Bellport High School, Ray excelled at sports. He served as captain of the varsity basketball and baseball teams, and played on the soccer team, as well. He stole home plate five times, and was awarded a scholarship to attend Bucknell College to play on its basketball team. He suffered a career-ending eye injury before he could enroll, and instead began his lengthy career as a public servant, in Suffolk County courts. Ray started out in the map room, ultimately completing his 40-year career as the chief clerk of the New York State Supreme Court for all of Suffolk County. In his tenure with the courts, Ray also completed an associate degree at Suffolk County Community College and served on the Board of Education for the Southold school district.

The two most significant women in Ray’s life were his mother, Jessie; and his cherished wife, Nancy. Ray and Nancy had first noticed each other around town in Bellport, and finally met on a double date at a softball dinner for Brookhaven Asphalt in the autumn of 1960. Nancy was his friend’s date, but Ray and Nancy were instantly smitten with each other. Out of respect for his friend, Ray waited three months to call her. Ray and Nancy were engaged by the following Christmas, and were married June 30, 1962. Ray and Nancy were blessed with three children, four grandchildren, many nieces and nephews who fondly dubbed him GOUR (Good Old Uncle Ray), and beloved dogs Sasquatch and Riqi.

He is survived by the love of his life, wife Nancy (Nystrom); children Jocelyn MacLean, Peri MacLean-Crowley, Ray MacLean and his wife Jennifer; grandchildren Zachary, Samuel and Courtney Crowley; granddaughter Kendall Grace; and by former children-in-law, Billy and Mandy.

He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Joyce and Linda and descendants. Additionally he is survived by the descendants of cousins Ruth, Margie, and many others, as well as his late cousin Ed’s widow, Rebecca MacLean, who was like a sister to him. Ray was ethical, patient, intelligent, and wonderfully kind. His sense of humor and generosity delighted those around him.

“We will deeply mourn and miss the man, the myth and the legend, and we are eternally grateful that we shared our lives with him for so long. Until we see each other again, Papa and Dad, enjoy the golf courses and softball fields of heaven. We love you.”

Online condolences may be made at peacocknewnamwhite.com. Serving the family is Peacock, Newnam & White Funeral and Cremation Service of Southport, N.C.
