Suzanne Pitman

Suzanne Pitman of Colonial Village in Southold died at Eastern Long Island Hospital on the morning of Nov. 12, 2018. She was 99.

Her husband of 76 years, Irv Pitman, was with her as she peacefully passed away.

Suzanne was born Feb. 24, 1919, in Zurich, Switzerland, to Mina (Pfaff) and Adolph Marklin. She came to the United States at the age of 3 and grew up in Bergen County, N.J. She graduated from Englewood Hospital School of Nursing in 1941.

In 1942 she married Irv, whose family had a summer home in Southold since 1920. From that time on, she visited Southold nearly every summer and moved there permanently from Tenafly/Bergenfield, N.J., in 2015.

Suzanne loved classical music, reading, her church, family and pets. She volunteered at Englewood Hospital, Mary Fisher Home and the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, N.J., and the church consistory. She and Irv bought a motor home and traveled extensively around the country and to Alaska.

She leaves behind her husband, Irv; sons William (Jeanne) and John (Sue); four grandchildren, Bill, Becky, Keri and Paul; and four great-grandchildren, Sammy, Ella, Cole and Jackson.

There will be a memorial service for Suzanne at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Clinton Avenue Reformed Church in Bergenfield.

Jane P. Kirby

Jane P. Kirby, 94, of Lynn, Mass., and Mattituck, N.Y., died at her home in Lynn Nov. 11, 2018.

She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Charles L. Kirby, and daughters Patricia Sado and Julia J. Kirby.

Jane was born in New York City Nov. 8, 1924. She graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart of Mary in Sag Harbor, N.Y., in 1938. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y., studied further at Boston College and earned a master’s in business administration from Pace University.

She worked for many years as a research chemist for Lederle Laboratories (now a division of Pfizer) in Pearl River, N.Y. Jane received many achievement awards for her work. She spoke regularly at chemical association conferences and was credited with the development of numerous patents for newly developed chemical compounds in the antibiotic field.

She traveled widely over the years, but was always happiest at her Mattituck home or on Nahant Beach and spending time with her beloved late husband, Charles, and her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by a daughter, Margaret K. LaMothe, and her husband, James, of Lynn, Mass.; and a son-in-law, Dan Sado of New York, N.Y. She was the devoted grandmother of Nathalie Sado Nisinson and her husband, Matthew, of New York, N.Y.; Matthew T. LaMothe and his wife, Nikki, of Salem, Mass.; Sara J. Bailey and her husband, Sean, of Lynn, Mass.; and John C. LaMothe and his wife, Alyssa, of Providence, R.I. She had the joy of being great-grandmother to Abigail and Evelyn LaMothe of Salem, Mass.

Jane is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Dorothy (McQuade) Kirby of Lynn and Mary (Kirby) Valeri of Nahant, Mass.

Friends may call at Cuffe-McGinn Funeral Home, 157 Maple St., Lynn, Mass. (cuffemcginn.com) Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018, from 3 to 6 p.m. The memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Cuffe McGinn, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Pius V Church, 215 Maple St., Lynn, Mass., at 11 a.m.

Barbara R. Mellas

Barbara R. Mellas, a 30-year resident of Orient, died Oct. 23 at Stony Brook University Hospital. She was 73.

Ms. Mellas was born March 16, 1945, in Flushing to Herbert and Ruth (Smith) Jones. She married James Mellas June 22, 1989, at East Marion Community Church.

According to family, Ms. Mellas was known for her caring and generosity, and took pride in running the bake sale at the harvest festivals hosted by St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport.

“She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She had a life so beautifully lived and a heart so deeply loved,” wrote her family.

Predeceased by her brother, Robert, she is survived by her husband; a daughter, Kimberly Stekardis and family of Smithtown; and a sister, Lynda Tabor of Orient.

The family received visitors Oct. 25 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, with a chapel service officiated by Pastor Garret Johnson. Burial followed at Orient Central Cemetery.

Bertha G. Thompson

Bertha G. Thompson of Cutchogue peacefully left this world Thursday, Nov. 15, 2018. She was 93.

Bertha was born May 16, 1925, to Magdalena (Rychlinski) and Frank Elak. She made her home and raised her family in Cutchogue with her husband, Elwood “Tommy” Thompson.

Bertha loved working at her Elak family Manor Hill Farm for many years. Her love of flowers and gardening made no chore of the work she also did for the Plantage and Trimble’s. Bertha was also very active in any club related to Our Lady of Ostrabrama, Cutchogue Fire Department and Southold American Legion. She was a kind soul and will be remembered by all she touched.

Bertha leaves behind a son, Thomas, of Mattituck; three daughters, Dorothy and her husband, Fred, of Cutchogue, Jeanne and her husband, Scott, of East Hampton and Terry and her husband, John, of East Marion; eight grandchildren: Stephen, Keith, Michael, Katherine, Kristin, Dylan, Jacquie and Rachel; and eight great-grandchildren: Jaden, Aniah, Reese, Travis Jr., Ethan, Gavin, Alexander and Hannah. She was predeceased by her husband in 1996 and her grandson Travis in 2017.

The family received friends Nov. 18 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated a Nov. 19 at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cut-chogue, officiated by Father Mariusz Gorazd. Interment followed at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Mattituck real estate broker Robert A. Celic Sr. died Nov. 17. He was 73.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Nov. 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where Mattituck Lions Club services will be held at 7:30 p.m.

D. Claeys Bahrenburg

D. Claeys Bahrenburg died peacefully Nov. 14, at age 71, surrounded by his family at his home in Orient, N.Y.

Claeys was a longtime resident of New York City and Orient, where he plied the seas on his beloved boat, Desperado. He made waves in the media world as publisher of Rolling Stone and former president of Hearst magazines, where he revitalized Harper’s Bazaar and oversaw Cosmopolitan, Esquire and several other titles. He followed with Peterson Publishing, where he served as vice chairman.

Claeys is survived by his children, Genevieve and Luke, and their mother, Linda.

His life will be celebrated at a private memorial reception at his home. His ashes will be sent to the sea and buried beside his father, William Bahrenburg, at the Orient cemetery.

Sam D. Curko

Sam D. Curko died Nov. 11 at his Shelter Island home. He was 78.Sam was born Aug. 4, 1940, in Nin, Croatia, to Kristina (Ivanov) and Rudolf Curko. He obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Ithaca College.

In 1970 he married Marion Glatzer in Goshen, N.Y., and together they made their home on Shelter Island and had three children. Prior to living on Shelter Island, Sam lived in Hoboken, N.J., from 1950 to 1957.

Sam worked as a physical education teacher for the Southold public school system for 32 years and will be remembered fondly by all the students he taught. He was an avid fan of the New York Jets football organization. He was a member of Our Lady of the Isle R.C. Church and the New York Education Association, as well as an inductee of the Hoboken Hall of Fame and Ithaca College Hall of Fame.

Sam is survived by his wife, Marion; children Heidi Curko and her husband, John Colangelo, of Bayonne, N.J., Gretchen Madore of Shelter Island and Erik Curko and his wife, Kim, of Shelter Island; grandchildren, Mia Colangelo, Ava Colangelo, Peyton Curko and Miles Curko; sister, MaryAnn Thievon and her husband, John, of Jackson, N.J.; and nephew John Jr. and niece Alyssa.

The family has chosen to remember Sam’s life privately.

Ruth Ann Buckley

Ruth Ann Buckley of Aquebogue died Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, at Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue from complications due to spinocerebellar ataxia. She was 50.Born in Greenport Aug. 10, 1968, to Fred A. and Barbara (Betic) Kaffke, she was a 1986 graduate of Riverhead High School and a 1990 graduate of SUNY/Cortland.

In October 1994 she married Timothy F. Buckley of Wading River at First Parish Church in Northville.

A lifelong East End resident, she moved to Myrtle Beach, S.C., in 2011 and returned to the North Fork in 2017 upon the sudden death of her husband on Sept. 29, 2016.

Ruth worked briefly for New York State as a court officer before starting her family. She had been a communicant of St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead and a volunteer member of the Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

She is survived by her daughters, Kaitlin Buckley of Conway, S.C., and Bridget and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Buckley, both of Aquebogue; and her sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and York Blank of South Jamesport.

Other relatives include her uncle John Betic of California; mother-in-law, Florence Buckley (the late John F. Buckley Jr.); brother- and sister-in-law, John and Sharon Buckley of Ronkonkoma; nieces and nephews, Christian Blank of South Jamesport and Rachel Blank of Pennsylvania, Conor Buckley of Stamford, Conn., Ryan Buckley of Ronkonkoma, Alicia Knopp of Baiting Hollow, Peter and Eric Knopp of Arizona and Danielle Kaffke Riegal of Washington.

She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Fred A. Kaffke Jr. and her sister Susan A. Kaffke Knopp.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Nov. 20, at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the funeral home with Deacon Michael Bonocore of St. Isidore R.C. Church officiating. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery.

Grace Elizabeth Gergela, 82, passed away Nov. 14, 2018, at Aston Gardens at the Courtyards in Sun City Center, Fla.

Grace, affectionately known as Betty, was born to Elizur and Grace Hills and raised in the Bronx, where she attended the prestigious Hunter College High School in Manhattan before moving to Riverhead when she was 16 years old. Betty graduated from Riverhead High School in 1953, married her spouse, Joseph, shortly after, and raised five children while working very hard alongside her husband on the family potato and vegetable farm.

After the farm was sold, Betty worked at Eastern Suffolk BOCES as an account clerk until retirement.

In 2010 Betty relocated to sunny Florida, where she met many new friends. She loved traveling, and connected easily with others. Betty was extremely talented and had many interests, including gardening, cooking, scrapbooking, attending plays, reading, and arts and crafts, including mosaics and stained glass.

Predeceased by her husband, Joseph Gergela, and her daughter, Joanne Smith, and her siblings, Edith and Larry, she is survived by her sons, Joseph (Donna) of Boynton Beach, Fla.; Douglas (Theresa) of Palm Coast, Fla.; and John (Debora) of Middle Island; her daughter, Cynthia (John Kistner) of Morrill, Maine; her grandchildren, Jessica, Elizabeth, Jonathan, and Joanna; and her great-grandchildren, Ben, Jack, Nathan, Grayson and Cayden. She also leaves two siblings, Edward Hills and Virginia O’Rourke, as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt “Thank you” to the staff at Aston Gardens and Lifepath Hospice.

Betty was cremated and, at her request, her ashes will be buried alongside her husband and her daughter in St. John the Evangelist Cemetery in Riverhead.

Martha Newton Johnson

Longtime Greenport resident Martha Newton Johnson died peacefully at her home on the morning of Nov. 19, 2018, surrounded by her beloved family and devoted dog, Leo. She was 95 years old.

Martha was born Aug. 2, 1923, in Montclair, N.J., to Mabel Stocking Wessels and Paul Newton. She was an excellent student, praised by her teachers and her dance and music instructors. She earned a degree in chemistry from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa. She married Howard C. E. Johnson, a colleague at Chemical Week, in Montclair in 1946. The couple lived in Greenwich Village, New York City. The marriage ended in divorce. Martha worked for many years in public relations, writing press releases and newsletters and taking photos for such diverse organizations as General Electric, Union Carbide and the Special Libraries Association. Martha acquired a second home in Greenport in 1983 to be close to her daughter Poppy and family and moved here permanently in 2003.

An accomplished athlete, Martha loved the outdoor life Greenport afforded her. She swam regularly in the Sound and the bay and could often be spotted on her bike around town. In later life, she exercised by pushing her walker downtown, accompanied by Leo. Martha trained Leo as a therapy dog and spent many hours at the local hospital providing healing love to those in need.

Martha led a very active social life. She was an enthusiastic hostess who made friends wherever she went. Her summer birthday garden parties were joyful gatherings of several generations with overflowing wine and food and impromptu songs. She loved meeting new people to include in her wide circle of friends.

Martha is survived by her children, Poppy, Linn and Richard; grandchildren Mira, Bran and Lily; Eber, Revel and Julia; and Damon, Jack and Alessa; four great-grandchildren, Leif and Frey, Myla and Leonardo; and many devoted friends.

A funeral service was held Saturday, Nov. 24, at Holy Trinity Church in Greenport.

Donald J. Ball

Donald J. Ball of Cutchogue died Nov. 21 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 84.

He was born April 20, 1934, in Evanston, Ill., to Catherine (Gormaly) and Russell Ball.

Mr. Ball attended Iona Prep and Manhattan College and worked for Grumman in Bethpage as a computer processor.

He was affiliated with Suffolk Program in Aquaculture Training. Family members said he enjoyed fishing, boating, gardening, golf and tennis.

Predeceased by his wife, Ellen, in 2014, he is survived by his children: Donald Jr., of California, Karen Breen of Maryland, Jeanne Fox of Massachusetts and Mary Beth Parlato of New Jersey; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Visiting hours were held Nov. 24 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Funeral services also took place Nov. 24 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, followed by burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

William F. ‘Bill’ Bogardus

William F. “Bill” Bogardus died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018, at Riverledge Nursing Home in Ogdensburg, N.Y., where he had been a patient while suffering with pancreatic cancer. He was 69.

Bill was born in Ogdensburg April 17, 1949, the son of Ruth Helen Witherhead and James Harry Bogardus Jr. He graduated from Morristown (N.Y.) Central School in 1967 and SUNY/Potsdam in 1971 and earned his master’s in education from St. Lawrence University in 1997.

On April 29, 2000, Bill married Kim Palermo at First Presbyterian Church of Ogdensburg, with the Rev. Thomas Patterson officiating.

In the mid-1970s he started teaching at Ogdensburg Free Academy as a high school physics teacher. Then, in the fall of 1998, he moved to Long Island and worked as principal at Greenport High School before working at Miller Place Union Free School District as science department chairman.

Bill was a man of many interests. He became an Eagle Scout, had been Morristown Town Justice and was a member of the Mustangs Band in Morristown in the late 1960s.

Later, he became interested in flying, so much so that he and others purchased a plane and obtained their private pilot’s licenses. Bill continued on to be a certified flight instructor-instrument (CFII).

A past chief of the Morristown Fire Department, he was also an EMT. He continued to serve fire and rescue with the Greenport Fire Department and Rescue Squad, where in the past he served as assistant chief and EMT. He was an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Southold.

Bill was also interested in beekeeping, travel, music, astrophotography and astronomy. He was the current president of the Astronomical League and former president of both Custer Institute and the Astronomical Society of Long Island.

Surviving are his wife, Kim S. Palermo-Bogardus; three daughters, Nicole (Andrew) LaPlante of Peru, N.Y., Mandy Bogardus of Saranac Lake, N.Y., and Katie (Tim) Kyle of Wethersfield, Conn.; a stepson, Dave (Jesse Heider-Ayling) Ayling of Toledo, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Becca Bley of Cheektowaga, N.Y.; four grandchildren; three brothers, James “Jim” (Penny) III, of Morristown, Bob (Helga), of Holly Springs, N.C., and John (Fran), of Delmar, N.Y.; a sister, Ann (David) Fenlong of DeKalb Junction, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services are set for Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Ogdensburg, the Rev. Laurena Will officiating. Burial will follow at Sunnyside Cemetery in Morristown. A memorial service will be held later at First Presbyterian Church of Southold.

Robert Celic Sr.

It is with great sadness that the family of Robert Celic Sr. announces his passing on Nov. 17, 2018, at the age of 73 years.Bob was a true North Fork native, born and bred in Riverhead to a farming and real estate development family. He began his real estate career when he sold one of his dad’s building lots to a customer while his folks were away on vacation — Bob was 13 years old at the time — and the deal closed in three weeks! He was hooked on real estate sales from that moment.

He graduated from Riverhead High School and received degrees in business administration and finance at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga.

Bob was a longtime, dedicated member and past president of the Mattituck Lions Club and an avid golfing member at Cutchogue’s North Fork Country Club. He especially enjoyed cooking for family and friends, painting, playing the harmonica and bringing joy and laughter to all he met.

He will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 50 years, Deborah; his five children, Robert Jr. (Sylwia), Christian, Devon (Gina), Kimberly and Penny (Michael); nine grandchildren, Lauren, Katherine, Cassidy, Emma, Luke, Liam, Finn, Gabriela and Noah; and his siblings Elizabeth, Linda and Victor.

The family received visitors Nov. 21 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Nov. 23 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, followed by interment at New Bethany Cemetery in Mattituck.

Dorothy A. Watson of Orient died Nov. 26 at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. She was 70.

Ms. Watson was born Oct. 23, 1948, in the Bronx to Alfred and Dorothy (Rohr) Watson.

She attended college and later worked as a secretary for 15 years.

Predeceased by her father in 2005, Ms. Watson is survived by her mother, Dorothy L. Fisher of Orient; a sister, Donna J. Watson of Beverly Hills, Fla.; and a brother, Alfred H. Watson of Los Angeles, Calif.

Private cremation will be handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Joseph Onorato Brandi (July 3, 1920 – Sept. 7, 2018)

Beatrice Mildred Van Valkenburg Brandi (Sept. 23, 1923 – May 12, 2017)

Joe, born in Greenport, was the son of Onorato and Filomena Schiavoni Brandi, both born in Italy. The family business was Brandi’s Shoe Store on Front Street and also where the Brandis were born and raised. Bea, born in Woodhaven, Queens County, N.Y., was the daughter of Paul Iretus and Mildred Smith Van Valkenburg.

Joe and Bea met, fell in love and were married in Greenport on Dec. 5, 1943. They raised two sons and lived and worked in Greenport until they retired and moved to Umatilla, Fla., in 1982. In 2006 they relocated to Wilmington, N.C.

Joe remembered his early years in Greenport and recounted tales of exploits with childhood friends. He spoke about working with the Richter brothers and other activities he participated in during his life in Greenport. He was still wearing his yellow Eagle Hose jacket.

Bea enjoyed working at The Arcade, in the Greenport School cafeteria and then as the dietician overseeing the kitchen at San Simeon by the Sound when it first opened. She especially loved gathering with her circle of ladies, known as “Club.”

Joe was predeceased by all of his siblings: Serafina, Rosina, Louis, Columbus, Madalena, Custodio and Renigilda. Bea was predeceased by her only sister, Myrtle Gracia Van Valkenburg Amott. They are survived by their sons, Lee Joseph Brandi, wife Judith, of Hebron, Conn., and Raymond Paul Brandi, wife Katherine, of Wilmington, N.C.; grandson Matthew Lee Brandi, wife Andrea and great-grandson James Andrew Brandi, all of Glastonbury, Conn., and many nieces and nephews living near and far.
