Helen Didriksen

Helen Didriksen of Nantucket, Southold, N.Y., and Little Gasparilla Island, Fla., and for 40 years a resident of Riverside, Conn., died March 27 at age 77.

She was born Dec. 1, 1940, in Oceanside, L.I., N.Y., the daughter of Henry Christopher and Caroline Burtis Elfers. She attended public schools there, and graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1962. She earned masters degrees at New York University in music education and in American History.

Helen’s primary focuses in life were music, history, and her four children. She created many lecture-concerts on the art song which were given throughout the greater New York area. Each concert centered on a different composer and was augmented with projected slides, a discussion of the composer and the times, and her solo soprano performance. She was accompanied by the noted pianist, Ernest Rustia, She also sang lighter music with the Decibelles and Song Folk, off-shoots of the Greenwich Junior Woman’s Club, and with singer-guitarist Marge York. She retired from singing in 1996 with an all day, four concert series on Charles Ives. When she and her husband moved to Nantucket in 2006 she resumed her singing with the Women’s Chorus of Nantucket and the Nantucket Community Chorus.

She was a volunteer researcher at the historical societies of Greenwich, Nantucket, and especially Southold, where she created several lectures and exhibition catalogues and was a trustee.

She met Philip Didriksen, her husband-to-be, in 1963. She was a reporter for the newspaper in Greenwich, Conn., and he was a financial analyst in New York. They had common interests in opera, classical concerts, and the theatre. They were married the next year and lived in Greenwich Village in the quaint and famous narrowest house in New York City. Two years later they moved into a house in Riverside, Conn. that was large enough for the four children that they were to have. It was their home for 40 years.

They joined the Riverside Yacht Club and were active one-design sailboat racers in their Flying Scot for many years. They also engaged in extensive family sailboat cruising, both by charters and on their 41’ ketch, Lady K, in Southern New England, Maine, Nova Scotia, the Caribbean and the Chesapeake. She loved Vermont. Every year they rented homes there for the winter for family weekend skiing. She provided constant and caring support for her children. There were countless birthday parties, swim meets, soccer and baseball games, school plays, and music lessons.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years and by her four children: Bradford (and his companion, Paula), Michael (and his wife, Leah), Stephen, and Katherine (and her husband, Brandon Barone) and also by six grandchildren: Evan Didriksen-Johnson; Jacob, Samuel and Isabella Didriksen; and Ainsleigh and Ian Brezac. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, William, who died as a teenager.

At her request, there will be no memorial service and burial will be private. Donations may be made in her name to the Southold Historical Society and to the Nantucket Music Center.

This is a paid notice.

Morgan Riley West

Morgan Riley West of Cutchogue passed away at home in the loving arms of her parents and sister on April 6, 2018, after a 6½-year battle with cancer. She was only 9 years old.

Born on Feb. 11, 2009, at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, N.Y., to Adam and Nikki West, Morgan was a 3rd-grade student at Cutchogue Elementary School, who LOVED: all things Disney (especially her Winnie-the-Pooh); her annual family trips to Damariscotta Lake, Maine; playing baby dolls with her loving big sister, Hunter; running around laughing (sans clothing) with her hilarious little brother, Wyatt; goofing around with all her cousins; sleepovers at her grandparents; her two best friends; playing soccer with the Queen Bees; and most of all, snuggling with her family in her most absolute favorite place to be, home.

At 2½ years old, Morgan was diagnosed with a Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Her life expectancy was roughly a year. Fighting cancer was her super power. Brave and strong throughout her journey, she defied all odds. A warrior through it all, she never complained or thought of herself over others. She had a wicked sense of humor that always kept her family laughing and taught them to enjoy each and every day.

“Morgan taught us more in her 9 years than we could have ever taught her in a lifetime. She touched the hearts of so many and we couldn’t be more proud of her!”

Morgan is survived by her parents, sister, brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and great-grandparents.

The family will receive condolences Saturday, April 14, from 2 to 5 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The family requests that you wear cheerful colors to celebrate her life.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Morgan’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Donation envelopes will be provided at the funeral home. You can also go online and donate directly at: shop.stjude.org or visit the “helpinghands4morgan” Facebook page.

Reginald Walter Peterson

Reginald Walter Peterson – June 16, 1925, to April 4, 2018.

Reginald was the middle son born to Ruby Latham Peterson and Carlton Valentino Peterson.

Before he graduated from Greenport High School, Reg enlisted in the Army and entered World War II. He fought in Europe under General George S. Patton, third army 20th Armored Infantry Battalion. In 2017, he was finally honored and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals in a formal ceremony, presented by Congesssman Lee Zeldin. He wore his technical sergeant army jacket, which still fit. More awards came when New York State Senator Kenneth Lavalle entered his name on the New York State Veterans Hall of Fame in Albany and Anthony Palumbo, New York State Assemblyman 2nd district, presented Reg with the proclamation thanking him for his World War II service. In 2017, Reginald happily received his high school diploma from Greenport High School.

After his military service, Reg worked on an oyster boat, did some farm work and eventually had his own carpenter business. In 1950, he married Helen Tyte of Riverhead and they raised four children. Reg and Helen have eight wonderful grandchildren and 16 terrific great-grandchildren.

Mr. “Pete” was a friend and mentor to many of the kids in East Marion, as a 4-H Club leader, Little League coach and antique bottle collector.

Reg loved archaeology and finding arrowheads, a hobby inspired by his uncle, Roy Latham, noted Orient naturalist.

Reg was active in the First Baptist Church of Greenport. One of the beautiful stained-glass Tiffany windows in the church was dedicated to the memory of his grandmother, who died when his mother was a little girl.

Most of all, however, Reg wanted to be remembered as one who loved Jesus Christ as his personal savior. He enjoyed talking to other about the way to heaven. Reg said “Confess your sins, Believe Jesus died for you, and Ask him into your heart, believe this and we’ll meet in heaven.”

Reginald is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, Walter (Joann), Catherine (Donald), James (Debbie) and Laurence and his younger brother, the Rev. Philip Peterson (World War II Army veteran). He was recently predeceased by his older brother Kenneth Peterson (World War II Navy veteran) and in 1953, by an 18-month-old son, Ricky.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 14, at First Baptist Church in Greenport, Pastor Tom LaMothe officiating.

If you would like to honor Reginald with a memorial donation, a gift to Samaritan’s Purse for the Operation Christmas Child shoebox project would be appreciated, or a contribution to his church, First Baptist Church in Greenport.

The most helpful and appreciated arrangements were made by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

This is a paid notice.
