Joan Patricia Pressler

Joan Patricia (née Rusch) Pressler of Southold became another angel in heaven on July 3, 2017, at the age of 79.

Joan was born in Brooklyn Sept. 28, 1937, to Helen and Henry Rusch. Joan was raised in Valley Stream and graduated from West Hempstead High School in 1955.

She married the love of her life, Edmund Pressler, on June 22, 1957. He predeceased her on April 12, 2016. They raised their family in Massapequa before moving out to their home in Southold in 1981. Together they had four children, Michael (Allison), of Aquebogue; Jim, of Southold; Ric (Theresa), of Southold; and Lauren (Frank) Kruszeski of Southold. Joan was the proud grandmother of seven: Richard, Brian, Emily, Melissa, Jennifer, Robert and Max. She is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Walter, of North Bellmore, and Bob, of Jupiter, Fla.; and an aunt, Patricia Whitney of Ocean, N.J., who was more her sister. She also leaves behind three nephews and two nieces, along with many cousins and friends.

Joan loved life. She was everybody’s “Mom.” Anytime you needed an ear or a shoulder to lean on, you could always count on Joan.

Joan and Ed were the owners of Pastimes Antiques in Southold for about 35 years. The shop is where she would love to talk to all who came in. And she loved to talk! She had so many friends that have had an impact on her life, as well as her family members’ lives. We know she will be sorely missed.

Joan and Ed did everything together, from running the antique store to going fishing and traveling. They loved to travel to Hawaii and Florida.

Joan enjoyed caring for her African violets and orchids. She loved to be around family and friends. There was always laughter to be heard and food to be eaten. Not a day went by that these words were not said: “I love you … I love you more.”

The family received an outpouring of support from family and friends on July 6. She was laid to rest July 7 at St. Patrick R.C. Cemetery in Southold.

The family has requested that any memorial donations be sent to an organization close to your heart.

Rudolph Bruer, a Southold Town justice for two decades who began practicing law in 1965, died Wednesday. He was 77.

Mr. Bruer was first elected in 1995, winning a three-candidate race by 519 votes. He served until 2015, when he decided to retire and not seek re-election following his fifth term.

Town officials remembered Mr. Bruer as a family man who admirably served Southold Town.

“He was not only a justice for the town, but a very close friend of mine,” said Southold Supervisor Scott Russell. “I worked on campaigns with him. I was proud to have actually run one of his campaigns in the past.”

A Southold resident since 1960, Mr. Bruer worked early in his career as a trial attorney in New York for a firm specializing in negligence cases. He had moved to Florida after retiring.

“He was a great friend of mine for 40 years and it was an honor to serve with him for his 20 years on the bench,” said Southold Town Justice Bill Price, who will retire at the end of this year after serving more than 35 years.

Mr. Bruer earned a law degree at Brooklyn Law School after graduating from St. Lawrence University.

In his last election, in 2011, Mr. Bruer faced a challenger for the first time in 12 years. A veteran Republican, Mr. Bruer went up against attorney Brian Hughes, a Republican who ran with Democratic support. Mr. Bruer easily won his re-election bid with 62 percent of the votes.

“He was just a dynamite jurist and just a wonderful person,” Mr. Russell said.

Visitation will take place Saturday at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. as well as Sunday from 2-6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Southold. Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Robert Reiter

Shelter Island lost an Island legend, icon and unique character when Robert Reiter passed away at home on Sunday, July 16, 2017. He was 84.

Born in Greenport Nov. 19, 1932, to Theodore and Mary (Norkelun) Reiter, he was one of six children. In his younger years, Bob was an avid roller skater at the Greenport rink. He could “cut a rug” both on the dance floor and on skates, his family recalled. He was, they said, a real old-fashioned lady’s man.

Working as an usher at the movie theater in Greenport, Bob approached Kolina May Nevel, who was there with friends from Shelter Island, and told her “someday I’m going to marry you,” she recalled, adding “I told him, ‘You gotta be kidding me!’ ”

The couple married in 1960 and had three sons, R. Michael, Earl and Jeffrey.

A great outdoorsman, Bob enjoyed deer hunting locally and in upstate New York. He had always been involved in fishing activities, clamming, scalloping and gillnetting. He spent 10 years on sea scallop boats and as a local bay scalloper was profiled by The Newsday Magazine on Jan. 2, 1983, in a long article and photo essay entitled “The Hard, Sweet Life of a Scalloper.”

The family moved to Shelter Island in 1962 as caretakers of the Garr estate. A year later, Bob became a full-time bayman.

He served as a volunteer fireman for about 20 years and had his share of escapades, his family recalled, like the time he had to vent the roof of the manor house in Mashomack.

Bob and Kolina purchased what is now Bob’s Fish Market and Restaurant in 1969. The market began as a scallop shucking shop and evolved over time, starting with an all-you-can-eat fish fry and continuing to grow due to Island demand.

For 33 years, Bob was involved in the annual fundraiser at Mashomack where he cooked lobsters in ‘Big Bertha,’ sometimes wearing outlandish getups. Last summer he participated with his buddy Warren Lucas.

Missing him greatly are his wife, Kolina; his sons, R. Michael, Earl and Jeffrey, and their families; grandchildren, Anthony, Kayla and Amelia; great-grandchildren, Gloria, Margaret, Anthony and Lucas; along with hundreds of his friends, customers and acquaintances.

The Reiter family invites all to join in a day of remembrance on Saturday, Sept. 9, beginning at noon at Bob’s Fish Market and Restaurant.

This is a paid notice.
