Denise C. Rathbun

Denise Catherine Rathbun of Greenport died May 27 at The Shores at Peconic Landing after a long illness. She was 83.

She was born March 11, 1934, in Yonkers to Frida (Schad) and Don Seavey Rathbun, a nurse from Zurich and a corporate lawyer who married aboard the S.S. Rex en route from Naples, Italy, to New York. She grew up in Riverside, Conn., graduated from Greenwich Academy and, after a year at Wellesley College, earned a bachelor’s degree in government in 1956 from Smith College in Northampton, Mass., having made the dean’s list consistently for three years. She remained a devoted Smith alumna throughout her life.

After 10 years in PR at Doubleday publishers, Denise began work toward a master’s at City University of New York. However, according to longtime friend Phyllis Rosser, she didn’t finish “because she realized teachers weren’t in big demand” at the time. Instead, she returned to publishing as an editor at Henry Holt and Praeger Publishers, where she was in charge of history and political science titles. She later became in-house editor for the consulting firm Organization Resources Counselors, from which she eventually retired.

After living for many decades in the heart of Manhattan’s Greenwich Village, Denise purchased the historic “Walt Whitman” house in Greenport in 1997 and quickly immersed herself in village social and civic life. In addition to the beautiful garden at her home, she designed and planted the garden behind Village Hall to complete Master Gardener certification from Cornell Cooperative Extension. She volunteered at Eastern Long Island Hospital’s Opportunity Shop, was a member of the village tree committee and taught English and citizenship at Floyd Memorial Library. She also became a certified Alexander Technique instructor and operated a private practice in the village. In addition, she took Pilates classes, was an avid bridge player and studied German and Chinese. She was known for her annual March Madness parties, where friends from across the North Fork would gather to reconnect after a winter of relative hibernation.

She always loved to travel, Ms. Rosser said, making frequent trips to Switzerland, where she had relatives, and extensive visits to Australia, France, Indonesia, Viet Nam and throughout mainland China.

Denise was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Southold and became an ordained deacon there. The Rev. Dr. Peter Kelley said she was “a very thoughtful, inclusive, faithful and kind person who quietly served the church in many different ways … [and] enjoyed a good conversation on the deeper matters of faith and life.”
Denise is survived by dozens of loyal and loving friends, most notably Orient resident Janet Markarian and her children, Abigail and Alex Collier of New York City, and Andrew Collier of Hong Kong, China.

“Denise was a member and true supporter of my family,” said Ms. Markarian. “She was curious, energetic, true to her word and fiercely independent. I benefited from her guidance and will always miss her.”

Mr. Collier described her as “smart, lively and loyal. I was always impressed that she could jump on a plane and travel to rough places by herself.”

A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Southold Sunday, June 18, at 1 p.m.

Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport handled arrangements.

This is a paid notice.

Longtime Riverhead resident Bernadette A. Voras died June 6, 2017, at San Simeon by the Sound in Greenport. Bern had been debilitated following a stroke in 2011. She was 79.

Bern was born on June 28, 1937. At the age of 18 she joined a religious community and spent 15 years affiliated with the community. Upon leaving, she became a “master teacher” of biology, astronomy and marine science, developing much of the curriculum for these courses. She held strong beliefs about the support that children need to discover the joy of leaning and dedicated herself to this goal. Her children (as she referred to her students) always came first. She retired from Shoreham-Wading River High School in 1997.

Bern had always been an avid birder and after retirement she purchased an RV and traveled across the country, pursuing the most celebrated and interesting birding habitat. She also organized and led teaching tours for birding enthusiasm. The back of her vehicle was always full of birding paraphernalia. Her favorite birding location was Cape Cod and she would head there almost every fall.

In addition to her birding adventures Bern enjoyed cooking and sharing great meals with friends. Prior to her stroke she also volunteered at the senior center in Riverhead.

Bern always maintained a close relationship with God and despite the ups and downs of life’s journey, she did her best to adapt and accept life’s changes with grace. Her wishes were to have a private funeral.

Arrangements were entrusted to Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Joan Rowe Stiles

Longtime Cutchogue resident Joan R. Stiles died June 16 at the age of 87.

Joan was born Jan. 9, 1930, in Brooklyn to John A. Rowe and Robina (Kennedy) Rowe. Joan graduated from Manhasset High School and attended Beaver College in Pennsylvania. Her favorite college saying was “You can always tell a Beaver by her tail.”

In 1949, after sailing at the Old Cove Yacht Club, Joan met the love of her life and future father of their three children, William H. Stiles of Brooklyn and Cutchogue. After marrying in 1952, Joan and Bill raised their three children in Chappaqua, N.Y., and Cutchogue. Joan spent her early years growing up in Munsey Park, Manhasset and at the end of Nassau Point.

An avid golfer, Joan was a longtime member of North Fork Country Club, former member of Mount Kisco Country Club in Westchester, N.Y., and Mariners Sands Country Club in Stuart, Fla. As members of the “Old Duffers,” Joan and Bill each achieved the “holy grail” of golf and registered two “holes-in-one” at NFCC and Mariners Sands.

Joan’s other passions included painting, literature and enjoyment of the great outdoors on the North Fork, which included sailing, boating with friends, and gardening at “Shawandasse.” Joan’s beautiful watercolor paintings were on display in her homes and enjoyed by all her friends and family, but the biggest lover of her art was her husband, Bill.

Wherever Joan went she quickly surrounded herself with a large circle of “best” friends. She was known for having one of the sharpest senses of humor and taught us all to enjoy life and laugh as often as possible. Among the most important things to Joan were her many close friends from Manhasset, Chappaqua, Mariners Sands and Cutchogue. Joan cherished her family and all the great times spent with her seven grandchildren.

Joan was a loving and dedicated wife and mother who always put family first. She and Bill were longtime members of Mattituck Presbyterian Church, which provided the foundation for their strong family values.

Joan is survived by her three children, Karin E. Stiles of New Suffolk, William H. Stiles Jr. of Brookfield, Conn., and Thomas R. Stiles of Manhattan Beach, Calif. Joan was also blessed with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate Joan’s life will be held in July.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Mattituck Presbyterian Church or the Cutchogue Fire Department would be appreciated.

Arrangements were entrusted to Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

This is a paid notice.
