Peter M. Coleman

Peter M. Coleman, retired local banker, passionate collector of antique custom cars and lifelong resident of Mattituck, passed away March 22, 2017. He was 75.

Mr. Coleman was born in Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport in 1941. He graduated from Mattituck High School in 1959 and from SUNY Delhi in 1961. He then served in the U.S. Army for two years. While stationed in Fort Gordon, GA, he met his future wife, Sandra Barthlow. They married in 1963.

Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Pete moved back to Mattituck where he joined North Fork Bank & Trust Co as a commercial lender. He graduated from the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University in 1973.

After 25 years with North Fork Bank, he joined Riverhead Savings Bank for 5 years. He then retired after 18 years with Bridgehampton National Bank.

Pete was a member of the Mattituck Fire Department where he served as fire chief and then fire commissioner. For 50 years, he was also an active member of the Mattituck Lions Club, who awarded him the Melvin Jones Award.

Pete was known around the country for his custom antique cars. Over the years, his cars were often awarded best in show at car shows across the country, and featured in national magazines.

He was also an avid boater. For many years, Pete and his wife Sandy were summer evening fixtures in Robins Island cove aboard their boat, the “Sandy Sea.”

His family and friends considered him their very own “George Bailey” from the Christmas movie classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.” He did right by everyone he met in the hometown he cherished, for a community he loved and respected. He was proud to say he had no regrets.

He was a member of the Mattituck Inlet Advisory Committee, the Hamlet Advisory Committee, the North Fork Housing Alliance, and a past elder of the Mattituck Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Coleman was predeceased by his parents, Cyril and Elizabeth (Duryee) Coleman, and his brother, Philip. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; his children, Pamela, Paul, and Janet (Sides), grandson, Seth (Zahra), sister, Virginia (Hoag), two nieces and a nephew.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, March 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A Mattituck Fire Department service will be held at 7:30 p.m., immediately followed by a Mattituck Lions Club Service.

Mr. Coleman will be interred in the Coleman Family Cemetery inBuckingham, Va. during a service held by his surviving sister, Virginia Coleman Hoag, and his entire Virginia-based family.

The Coleman family requests that donations be made to either the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue or to the charity of choice.

Dominick J. Gebbia

Dominick J. Gebbia of Riverhead died March 21, 2017, at home. He was 80.

He was born in the Bronx Sept. 18, 1936, to Frank and Shirley Gebbia and later married Annette T. Comunale on Jan. 28, 1961.

Dominick attended college at C.W. Post and had been an engineer in the avionics industry.

Formerly of Commack, he had lived on the North Fork for the past 15 years.

Surviving are his wife; four children, Lisa Gebbia, Doreen Gebbia, Allison Pappas and Dominick Gebbia Jr.; and three grandchildren, Christopher and Jonathan Pappas and Isabella Gebbia.

Graveside services were held March 25 at St. Isidore R.C. Cemetery in Riverhead.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck assisted the family.

Anne Phyllis Klipp

Anne Phyllis Klipp of Southold died in her home on the morning of March 23, 2017. She was 95.

Born in Greenport on Jan. 28, 1922, to Anna and Luther Hardy, she was a graduate of Greenport High School Class of 1939.

In September 1941, she married Lawrence Klipp and together they lived on Shelter Island from 1980 to 1985. For the past 30 years, she lived in Southold.

Phyllis had been the admin office director of the library in Prince Georges County, Md. for 10 years.

In the North Fork community, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Southold, American Legion Auxiliary and had been the travel director for the Southold Senior Citizens from 1984 to 1989. She was also a 40-year member of Sweet Adelines.

She is survived by her children, Larry of South Dakota, Marilyn of San Diego, Calif., Jean of South Carolina and Joel of Bakersfield, Calif. and eight grandchildren, Christopher and Leslie, Brent, Adam and Melissa and Justine, Krystalyn and Gabriella. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence B. Klipp and her sister, Helen Frederick (née Hardy). Also surviving are family members Steve and Heather Geehreng, Edith Kudlinski, Joan Olszewski, Jean Dunkirk, Louis Green, Mary Part Tuthill, Scott Klipp and Peter Klipp.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, at First Presbyterian Church in Southold on Tuesday, March 28th at 2 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley. Interment will follow at St. Agnes R.C. Cemetery.

DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home assisted the family.

James David Brophy Jr.

James David Brophy Jr.

Former longtime Southampton resident, James David Brophy Jr. of Greenport, died March 25 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. He was 90. 

The son of James David and Mildred Stall (Brophy), he was born Oct. 5, 1926, in Mount Vernon, N.Y. He graduated from Iona Prep and received a Bachelor of Arts from Iona College, a doctorate degree from Columbia University and was a Fullbright Scholar from 1950 to 1951.

On March 26, 1951, he married Elizabeth Bergen in Paris.

Mr. Brophy served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946 as an electronic technician’s mater 2nd class. For 40 years, he worked as a professor of English literature at Iona College in New Rochelle.

Predeceased by his wife and son David in 2011, he is survived by his daughters, Shelia Peiffer (Steven) of Wallingford, Conn., Katharine, of Harrison, N.Y., Elizabeth, of Philadelphia and James Brophy (Susan McKenna) of Newark, Del.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, March 29, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 30, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, officiated by Father Richard Hoerning.

Catherine Clare Carey

Catherine Clare Carey

Catherine Clare Carey, 97, of Greenport, formerly of Remsenburg and Sands Point, N.Y. and North Palm Beach, Fla. passed away March 24 in Greenport after a brief illness.

She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Dennis J. Carey; son Denis III (DJ) and brothers, Michael and Robert McDonald.

After a career in advertising in New York and Los Angeles she married Dennis, with whom she raised five children. She is survived by her children Robert, Gregory (Diana), Geoffrey and Cynthia Lalone (Charles), eight grandchildren, sister Ann McAvoy and many nieces and nephews.

Active in many charities, she was a Dame of Malta and of the Holy Sepulchre. A devoted mother, known for her grace, wit and candor, Clare was an accomplished bridge player and avid reader.

The Careys wish to express their gratitude to the staff and residents of Peconic Landing.

Friends may visit Thursday, March 30, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, March 31, St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport.

Anthony T. Zarzecki

Anthony T. Zarzecki of Cutchogue died March 25 at Acadia Center for Rehabilitation in Riverhead. He was 88. 

The son of Joseph and Mary (Kobjenska) Zarzecki, he was born April 18, 1928, in Cutchogue and attended Mattituck High School.

On June 17, 1972, he married Juneann Rauch at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue.

Mr. Zarzecki served in the U.S Army from 1952 to 1954 and worked in maintenance for Plum Island Research Center.

Family members said Mr. Zarzecki was a bayman who enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife; his siblings, David Zazeski of Mattituck, Mary Kirwin, Josephine Sorenson and Nellie Falcigno.

The family will receive visitors Monday, April 3, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue, followed by a 12:30 p.m. service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Calverton National Cemetery.

Kenneth F. Nolan

Kenneth F. Nolan died March 22, 2017, at the age of 87, while being comforted by loving family and dear friends.

Kenneth was raised in New York and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950. As a sergeant first class in the 23rd Regiment Company 2d, Company L, he was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for his heroic and inspiring leadership on Sept. 16, 1950, in Korea.

After the war Kenneth met the love of his life, Ardith Klein, got married in May of 1958 and started a family. They lived most of their lives in Cutchogue. His five proud children, Karen, Kevin, Kenneth J., Kris and Gary and their families, survive him.

For over 35 years he had a distinguished career at United Airlines in the New York area and retired in 1984. He loved life, family and friends and was often the hit of the party.

For many years he was a Riverhead chapter member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, and the Loyal Order of Moose where he served on the ritual team and as governor.

He made friends wherever he went and was a tremendous husband and father; an honest, kind and sweet man who went out of his way to help others.

John van Gelder

John (Skip) van Gelder of Garden City South and Southold died March 27, 2017, after a long illness.

He was the devoted husband of Eileen, his beloved wife of 44 years who survives him; adoring father of Erin (Jason) and John Gerritt (Jenny) and fun-loving PopPop of Samantha, Emma, Kaitlyn, Holland and Beckham. He is survived by his brother, Bob.

John’s professional career included positions as a district manager at Dun and Bradstreet and 30 years with 3M, retiring as a national accounts manager.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, March 29, at at Moloney’s Hauppauge Funeral Home in Hauppauge.

Gilbert Edward Pinkham

Gilbert E. Pinkham of the Fairhaven Senior Living Community in Sykesville, Md., formerly of Hilton Head, S.C., and Southold, passed away peacefully March 22, 2017, surrounded and comforted by his family.

Gil was the loving husband of Doris E. (Trownsell) Pinkham. He was a devoted father to the Rev. Dr. Carol Pinkham Oak, Audrey Pinkham Benson and Barbara Ellen Pinkham Patscott and father-in-law to Jeff Oak, Bob Benson and Arnell Patscott. Gil was a doting grandfather to Nathaniel and Julia Oak, Greg and Jessica Benson and Stuart and Eve Patscott.

Gil lived his life with the highest standards of integrity and dedication to his family, his work and his country. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. A graduate of Cornell and Yale, he was an electrical engineer with Sperry Corporation for over 30 years, providing major technical support for the U.S. nuclear submarine program. Gil also volunteered his time and expertise in many ways, serving in leadership roles with North Fork Country Club and the Fairhaven Community Association and gladly providing support to any family member or friend in need who asked for his help. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Ellicott City, Md.

Gil’s passions included golf, sailing, boating and his computer work. He was an avid and highly skilled golfer well into his elder years. He enjoyed countless happy hours with family and friends on or near the water, particularly at his beloved Reydon Shores cottage in Southold. He was an original member of the Southold Yacht Club, racing on Southold Bay from his teens into his eighties. Gil had a great many friends throughout his life, and enriched the lives of everyone he knew with his kindness, good humor and generosity of spirit.

Above all, Gil provided rock solid support for his family. He never tired of providing boat rides, cookouts or a helping hand, as long as the family was together. He was a good man to his core and will be missed by many.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the PACTT Learning Center for People with Autism (pactt.org) or the Integrace Fairhaven Resident Assistance Fund, Integrace Philanthropy, 576 Johnsville Road, Eldersburg, MD 21784.

A memorial service was held March 28 at the Fairhaven Chapel in Sykesville, Md. Interment at First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Southold is planned for a later date.

Carlos DeJesus

Lifelong Greenport resident Carlos DeJesus died March 29 at his home. He was 95. 

The son of Iolanthe (Sells) and Benigno DeJesus he was born Dec. 7, 1921, in Greenport and attended high school.

On March 17, 1951, he married Maria Ramos in Virginia.

Mr. DeJesus served in the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran.

He worked for the United States Postal Service at the Greenport Post Office and served as postmaster before retiring. Mr. DeJesus also served as commander of the American Legion Burton-Potter Post 185.

Family members said he enjoyed reading, watching PBS and many news shows, sitting outside and waving at passers-by, and that he enjoyed spending time with his family, always putting them first.

Predeceased by his siblings Mercedes, Florentina, Benigno, Glenwood, Maria and Teresa, he is survived by his spouse; his daughter, Barbara Soriano of Pomona, Calif., Mariana DeJesus of Aurora, Ill. and Teresa St. Charles; his son, Carlos X. DeJesus of Greenport; siblings, Iolanthe Mason, Anna Walker, Ramon DeJesus, Rosita Siklos and Dolores DeJesus and five grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Friday, March 31, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home. A funeral service at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport, officiated by Father Richard Hoerning. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Robert F. Karsch

Robert F. Karsch of Cutchogue and formerly of Garden City died March 28, 2017. Bob was born April 15, 1941, to Edward and Theresa Karsch in Floral Park, N.Y., and was a graduate of Sewanhaka High School (’59) and Syracuse University (’64) and received an MBA from Hofstra University.

Bob was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army, commanding a special weapons unit in the European Theatre from 1963 to 1965. He married Marilyn Irene Burke on Feb. 18, 1967, in Elmhurst, N.Y., and resided in Garden City, where they raised their two daughters, Tracy and Elizabeth.

Bob was a director at Bankers Trust Company/Deutsche Bank, from which he retired after 39 years of service. During his tenure, he was director of the American Pension Conference and was affiliated with the Investment Company Institute, Profit-Sharing Council of America and the Association of Private Pension and Welfare Plans of America. Bob was known in the field of retirement benefit plans as an employee benefit design and tax expert, and was involved in the creation of ERISA.

After moving to Cutchogue in 2004, Bob joined the Southold American Legion Post 803 and the Cutchogue Lions Club, for which he served as treasurer.

Bob was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn, of 38 years and siblings Charles Karsch and Joan Wilson, and is survived by siblings Edward, of Scituate, Mass., and Dorothy, of Harrisburg, Pa.; daughters Tracy Karsch Palumbo of New Suffolk and Elizabeth Karsch; and four grandchildren, Ryan, Madeline, Nina and Clara.

The family received friends March 31 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Religious services were held April 1 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck, led by the Rev. Eliot Frederic. Interment, with U.S. Army honors, was at Pinelawn Memorial Park. The Rev. Karen Ann Campbell officiated.

Muriel Peabody Loomis

Muriel Peabody Loomis, died peacefully in her sleep April 2, 2017. She was 87 years old.

Merly was a longtime resident of Greenport, lived in Augusta, Ga. and grew up in Manhattan and Princeton, Mass. As a young woman, she worked for the institute of International Education and Radio Free Europe. She was a devoted wife to the late Earl A. Loomis for over 40 years.

Merly delighted in sharing her passions for politics, cooking, music and animals with all her friends and family. She will be sorely missed by all of us.

Family visitation will be held Thursday, April 6, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, April 7, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport. Burial will take place at Sterling Cemetery. Nicholas J. Ellis

Nicholas J. Ellis

Nick Ellis, formerly of Cutchogue and Greenport, died March 28 in Greensboro, N.C., where he had recently moved with Bob Tapp, his partner of 27 years.

Nick was a hilarious and brilliant nonconformist and Bohemian. He was a career hairdresser with one-man salons in Port Washington, New York City and on the North Fork. In Port Washington he let a homeless man sleep in his shop for a full decade. One of his many memorable quotes was “The bigger the hair, the closer to God.”

With his partner, Bob, Nick was also cofounder and designer of their women’s sportswear business for 14 years and distributed internationally to the most fashion-conscious retailers. His humorous spin on life was often reflected on the clothing line.

Nick was an avid antique collector and “feared” by many North Fork yard salers.

He was a believer in God and eternal life, and has already sent signs the magic is real.

He is survived by his partner, Robert Tapp; his mother, Virginia; his birth mother, Judy; his sister, Jacqueline; his brother, Art; and two other brothers. His oldest sibling, Stephanie, predeceased him. Nick was a cancer survivor and eight-year survivor of unrelenting neuropathy pain.

A memorial service will take place at Cutchogue Presbyterian Church during the first week of May.

Memorial donations may be sent to The Barnabas Network in Greensboro, N.C., a nonprofit organization that provides furniture to people transitioning from homelessness to their own home, and victims of fire and flood.

William F. Edwards

William F. “Turk” Edwards, age 95, passed away peacefully April 4, 2017, with his loving family by his side. 

Turk was born March 28, 1922, in Baiting Hollow. William, who acquired the name Turk as a child, married his doting wife, Elizabeth “Betty” (née Panewich) Sept. 26, 1942, in Riverhead.

As a teenager, Turk was part of the first team starting lineup of the Riverhead Royals semi-pro football team and served as a Merchant Marine in South America. Turk was a New York State trooper and retired Suffolk County Police Department detective. He was president of the Riverhead Lions Club and captain of Riverhead Walsh Engine Company. Turk served his community with pride, but first and foremost, he was a family man who found nothing more rewarding than spending weekends with his children and grandchildren.

In 1979, Turk and Betty retired and split their time between St. Petersburg, Fla. and Riverhead until 2015, when they returned to New York to live with their granddaughter, Dawn Deerkoski, her husband, Jim and their daughters. According to Turk, returning to New York to spend more time with his family was his biggest blessing.

Turk is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Betty and son Bruce (Joanie); his six grandchildren, Tracy Polak (Greg), Dawn Deerkoski (James), Kristy Wilkinson (Brian), Peter Edwards (Keith), Becky Edwards and Bonnie Edwards (Bryan) and 11 great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Jared, Cassidy, Kobe, Olivia, Jadyn, Jacob, Anna, Aidyn, Trey and Mason. His son Barry predeceased him in 1983.

The family will receive visitors Friday, April 7, from 5 to 8 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Colin Crowley

Lifelong Greenport resident Colin Crowley died April 8 at Stony Brook University Hospital. He was 47. 

The son of Thomas and Patricia (Ruf) Crowley, he was born Jan. 17, 1970, in Oneonta, N.Y.

Mr. Crowley graduated from Greenport High School in 1988 and SUNY/Oneonta in 1993.

He is survived by his parents, of Orient; his siblings, Ian (Lynette), Courtney and Karey; and two nephews, Aidan and Declan.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, April 11, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 12, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport.

Elizabeth Jeremy Langhans

Elizabeth Jeremy Langhans, age 95, died peacefully at her home in Cutchogue on Feb. 27, 2017.
She was born Oct. 30, 1921, to the Rev. Walter and Jane (Jeremy) Langhans in Thornville, Ohio.

During World War II, Betsy served in the U.S. Army as an information specialist in the Pacific. She was honorably discharged in 1945 and earned several medals for her service.

Betsy went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts from Capital University, a Master of Arts from Stanford and, in 1961, a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Colorado. She was on the faculty of San Francisco State College and later a professor of education at Dowling College for 30 years.

As a member of the Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck, Betsy served as a chalice administrator and lay reader. She also served as a vestry member and senior warden. In recognition for her work, Betsy was awarded The Bishop’s Distinguished Service Cross.

Betsy enjoyed good conversation and a good joke. She cherished life, cared deeply for her fellow man and gave unselfishly. She was loved by many.

A memorial service was held March 11. She will be laid to rest with her parents in Thornville.
