The family will receive visitors Sunday, Dec. 18, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 19, at Saints Anargyroi, Taxiarchis and Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Church in Greenport. Burial will follow at Sterling Cemetery.

Thomas McGwire

Thomas “Tom” McGwire, 84, of Peconic, husband of the late Margaret Ann “Peggy” McGwire, passed away peacefully Dec. 1, 2016, at his home.

Tom was born in Watchung, N.J. to Margaret “Mike” Wilmerding and Edwin Dudley McGwire.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Vermont in 1954, Tom joined the U.S. Army. He served from 1954 to 1956 and was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant.

Tom began his business career as a fuel oil salesman for Esso Oil Company, where he eventually became a district manager and, finally, part of the mergers and acquisition group buying and selling fuel stations. In 1970, Tom took over Industrial Heater Corp on Canal Street in New York City. He successfully grew the company into a major supplier to the plastics industry and earned two patents for innovative heater designs.

Tom was also successful in real estate. He started Topeka Realty Corporation in 1980 and was instrumental in forming the Arrow Head Cove Association of Peconic in 1990.

An avid tennis player, golfer, outdoorsman and traveler, Tom belonged to the Pelham Country Club, North Fork Country Club and the Ocean Reef Club. He served on several boards of directors including Eastern Long Island Hospital, Eastern Region of the Society of Plastics Industry and North Fork Country Club.

Tom is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Thomas “Tad” and Kathy; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Margaret “Polly” and Richard Cosmedy; seven grandchildren, Thomas McGwire III, Charles McGwire, Brett McGwire, Michael Cosmedy, Christopher Cosmedy, Dana Cosmedy and Peter Cosmedy. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Doris McGwire; his sister and brother-in-law, Sandra and Robert Cassaro; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Katherine and James Mauer and his sister in law, Mary Jo Douglas.

Our family extends a heartfelt thank you to all of the health care providers that cared for Tom, especially Maureen Meyers-Cavanaugh and to his extended family of friends who enriched his life. In particular we would like to thank Betsey Skudder and the Jayne family for their love and friendship.

Arrangements were entrusted to Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

Mattituck resident Dorothy M. McDermott, formerly of Queens Village and Hollis, died Dec. 17 at the Kanas Center for Hospice Care in Quiogue. She was 87.

The daughter of Kirkwood and Ellen (Walsh) Morse, she was born Dec. 18, 1928, in Queens.

Ms. McDermott was a homemaker who worked as a real estate agent in Queens Village.

Family members said she loved her family dearly and enjoyed reading and history.

Predeceased by her husband, Edward, in 2016, Ms. McDermott is survived by her children, Dennis, of Mattituck, Monica, of Greenport, Joseph, of Oakdale, Mary Murray of Floral Park, Gerard, of New Hampshire, Paul, of Setauket, and Jeanne, of Floral Park; and nine grandchildren.

A service will take place at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. Interment will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Memorial donations may be made to the Kanas Center for Hospice Care.

Arrangements were in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

Franklin R. Saunders Jr.

Former Mattituck resident Franklin R. Saunders Jr. of Shirley died at home Dec. 17. He was 55.

The son of Franklin and Lynda (Johnson) Saunders, he was born Sept. 13, 1961, in Greenport and attended Mattituck High School.

Mr. Saunders worked as a chef at Elbow East in Southold.

Family members said he enjoyed science, history and reading.

Predeceased by his father, Mr. Saunders is survived by his mother, of Mattituck; his partner, Susan Scott; and his siblings, Cynthia Cormier of Riverhead and Pamela Conway of Southold.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Dec. 22, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at St. Isidore R.C. Church in Riverhead. Cremation was private.

Lifelong Greenport resident William J. Mills II died Dec. 19. He was 95.

A graveside service will take place at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.

Memorial donations may be made to Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport or The Island Gift of Life Foundation on Shelter Island.

Arrangements are in the care of Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Joan Theresa Wilkinson of Jamesport died Dec. 19, 2016, at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. She was 80.

She was born in Borough Park, Brooklyn, July 5, 1936, to Robert and Clementina Mary (Virgilio) Fasanello.

On Sept. 7, 1957, she married Albert Wilkinson in the Bronx. Later she attended the College of Old Westbury, where she majored in history/women’s studies and received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Formerly of the Bronx and Syosset where she lived for 30 years, she was a Jamesport resident for the past 20 years.

She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Parish at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck and a member of the Riverhead Garden Club.

She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Surviving are her husband, Albert; three children, Kathryn Ann and her husband, Larry Foley, of East Setauket, Albert Joseph Wilkinson and Desiree DeFigueroa of Wading River and Roberta Theresa and her husband, Thomas Magg, of Mattituck; her grandchildren, Whitney Foley and her husband, Matthew Ramos, TJ Magg, Lianne Foley, Amanda Magg, Taylor Foley, Maria Magg and Diane DeFigueroa; and a great-grandchild, Madison Ramos.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Dec. 22, from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 23, at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck. Interment will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Robert “Bobby” L. Gaska Jr. of Orient Point, formerly of Wantagh and Hicksville, died Dec. 18 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. He was 79. 

The son of Robert Gaska Sr. and Elizabeth (Allstadt), he was born Jan. 29, 1937, in Freeport.

He was the beloved husband of Patricia; loving father of Bobbi Ann, Jonathan, Russell, Scott and Kerry and grandfather of Maddox, Grant, Hayley, Meghan, Blair, Sean and Tyler.

Visiting hours will be held Wednesday, Dec. 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A 10 a.m. funeral Mass will be held Thursday, Dec. 22, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Stanley Koubek of East Marion died Nov. 27. He was 72. 

Born April 10, 1944., family members said he was an avid fisherman, diver and gardener who loved East Marion. He was a member of the East Marion Community Association and a board member since 2014.

A funeral service was held Dec. 10 at Jacobsen Funeral Home in Huntington Station.

Former longtime Mattituck resident Carl Stanley Giacomazzo of Riverhead died Nov. 26. He was 68. 

The son of Theresa (Abela) and Carmelo Salvatore Giacomazzo, he was born June 13, 1948, in Williamsburg, N.Y.

Mr. Giacomazzo was a high school graduate, who served in the U.S. Air Force in Germany in the communications division and achieved the rank of airman.

He worked for KAPS – All Packaging Systems, Inc. as a machinist.

Family members said he played accordion and guitar, spoke five languages and sketched and was an avid chess player and joke teller.

Mr. Giacomazzo is survived by his sister, Rose Marie; his daughter, Martina and his son, Giancarlo.

A funeral service took place Dec. 5 at Calverton National Cemetery, with military guard.

Lee A. (Poss) Maynard of Lexington Park, Md., born Aug. 31, 1947, in Burlington, Vt., age 69, passed away Dec. 18, 2016, at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick, Md., from a long-term illness.
She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Bruce Maynard; two daughters, Susan Cardona (Peter) of Hollywood, Md., and Karen Maynard of Lexington Park, Md.; grandsons, Catlin and Cordell Cardona, also of Hollywood, Md.; several nieces and nephews in Florida and Vermont; and several in-laws in Vermont. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert Poss and Ruth Morrill and her brother, David.

Lee was a dedicated wife and mother who, while living in Mattituck, was a caregiver for the elderly.

The family received guests for Lee’s life celebration and memorial services Dec. 22 at Brinsfield Funeral Home in Leonardtown, Md. A repast followed at Olde Towne Pub in Leonardtown.

Donations in memory of Lee may be made to the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation, 9891 Broken Land Parkway, Suite 101, Columbia, MD 21046.

Pamela Wakem Vincent

Pamela Wakem Vincent of Peconic Landing in Greenport died Dec. 22. She was 90. 

The daughter of Helen Genevieve (Mansbach) and Francis John Wakem, she was born April 21, 1926, in Flushing.

On Nov. 25, 1950, she married Brian Vincent Jr. in Roslyn.

Ms. Vincent attended Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in New York City.

She volunteered for the Manhasset Community Fund and Meals on Wheels and was a member of St. Mary’s Rosary society. Family members said she was a “friend to all.”

Predeceased by her husband, Ms. Vincent is survived by four children; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law; nieces, nephews and godchildren.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Dec. 29, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie in Greenport. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Anthony M. Faszczewski of Aquebogue died Dec. 25 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 65.

The son of Joseph and Stella Faszczewski, he was born March 26, 1951, in Port Jefferson. He graduated from Southold High School in 1970.

Mr. Faszczewski worked as a butcher/meat manager for King Kullen.

Family members said he enjoyed cooking, golfing and boating.

Predeceased by his parents and his brother Joseph, Mr. Faszczewski is survived by his wife, Christine (née Barker); his son, Anthony Jr. of Aquebogue; his siblings, Michael (Joyce) of Mattituck and Edward (Linda) of Cutchogue; his sisters-in-law, Jean Barker of Quogue and Kathy Barker of Louisiana; his brother-in-law, Daniel Wittington of Louisiana; his nephews, Luke Barker Magee, Alan Faszczewski and Jay Faszczewski; his nieces, Betsy Wittington, Amanda Selph, Lynelle Fas and Shelly Leonard and five grandchildren.

Cremation was private. A memorial service will take place Friday, Jan. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead.

Longtime Mattituck resident Donald L. Bergen died Dec. 28 at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 82. 

The son of Helen (Knappman) and Robert L. Bergen, he was born Sept. 28, 1934, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport.

Mr. Bergen earned his Masters of Retail in 1957 at the University of Pittsburgh.

On Jan. 28, 1961, he married Mary Constance “Connie” Landrigan in New York.

For 40 years, Mr. Bergen was the owner of Aladdin Fuel Service in Bayport.

He was a member of the Oil Heat Institute of Long Island, the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce, and a board member of Cedars Golf Course in Cutchogue.

Mr. Bergen enjoyed golf, boating, and stamp and coin collecting.

Predeceased by his brother, Dale, Mr. Bergen is survived by his wife, Connie; his sons, Bruce, of Mattituck and Brian of Sayville; his daughter, Janice, of Mattituck; his granddaughters, Marade, Elly and Kaylee Bergen and Samantha Fine and grandsons Ryan and Jared Bergen.

A memorial service will be held in the spring at New Bethany Cemetery in Matttituck.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or the American Liver Foundation.

Arrangements were entrusted to Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

Jason Damianos of Mattituck, owner of Jason’s Vineyard in Jameport, died suddenly Dec. 30. He was 49.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Jan. 5, and Friday Jan. 6, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. both days at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A firematic service will be held at the funeral home Friday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services and interment details are pending.

Memorial donations may be made to Mattituck Fire Department, Hope House Ministries in Port Jefferson or Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

Doris Elizabeth Bucks Morgan

Doris Elizabeth Bucks Morgan, who celebrated her 100th birthday last spring, passed away peacefully Dec. 20 at Cross Keys Village in New Oxford, Pa.

She was born to Frank and Elizabeth Bucks on May 8, 1916, in West Orange, N.J. and was predeceased by her brother and sister, Frank, Jr. and Ruth.

Married in 1939 to John “Jack” Carroll Morgan, Doris was the mother of Patricia Green of Kirkville, N.Y. and Carroll Davenport of Hanover, Pa. Jack passed away in 1978.

After marrying, Doris lived in Chester, N.J. for 40 years; in Orient for 32 years and at Cross Keys Village for 5 years. She was an active member of every community in which she lived and an accomplished crafter of ceramics, weaving, quilting, caning and beeswax candles.

Surviving, in addition to her daughters, are seven grandchildren: James (Cindy), John, Sue and Amy Green, Melanie Nicotra, Laura (Jonathan) Bransky and Abby (Tony) Murtagh; 12 great-grandchildren: James, Joseph, Jessica, Jordon, and Jeffrey Green, Stephanie Rendino, Samuel and Sydney Nicotra, Adam and Morgan Bransky and Patrick and Caroline Murtagh; and 6 great-great grandchildren: Payton, John, Daizy, Piper, Dallas and Madison Green.

A memorial service was held Jan. 4 at Nicarry Hall at Cross Keys Village. On April 29. Doris will be interred in the Orient Community Cemetery, next to her beloved Jack, following a service at the Orient Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Oysterponds Historical Society for preservation of the Orient Methodist Church or to the Cross Keys Village Foundation.

Doris lived a full life; was always active and interested in helping others; and was a delight and inspiration to all who knew her. Her greatest delight was hosting and entertaining friends and family.

June E. Pappas of Southold died Dec. 18, 2016, at her home at the age of 83.

She was born in Rockville Centre on Jan. 9, 1933, to Joseph and Catherine (Palmer) Sythoff.

June was trained as a licensed practical nurse and worked at the former Central Suffolk Hospital in Riverhead, now Peconic Bay Medical Center.

She was an avid gardener, artist and grew lavender to create beautiful gifts. Boating and traveling became a way of life she and her husband shared.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the American Revolution and HAL (Herb Association of Long Island)

Above all, she was as a loving wife and mother.

Formerly of Glen Cove and Huntington, she has been a resident of Southold since 1975.

Surviving are her husband Ernest Harry Pappas; children, Karen, Linda, Susan, Eddie, Sandy, Steven, Tassos and Maria; sister Carole Russo; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The family received visitors Dec. 21 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A Funeral Mass was held Dec. 22 at Saints Anargyroi, Taxiarchis and Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Church in Greenport, officiated by Father Gerasimos Ballas. Interment followed at Long Island National Cemetery in Pinelawn.
