Alberta S. Young

Former Laurel resident Alberta S. Young of Riverhead died Nov. 6 at the Riverhead Care Center. She was 95 years old.

She was born in Laurel Dec. 27, 1917, to Edward and Mary Emma (Fleischman) Scholtz and, as a child, was a member of the Campfire Girls organization. Family members said she was a devoted teacher at Aquebogue Elementary School for over 25 years. She was also a member of The Riverhead Woman’s Club, Sound Avenue Grange and East End Miniature Artisans.

Predeceased by her husband, Edson H. Young Jr., she is survived by her nephew, Donald Scholtz of Laurel; her nieces, Diane Collins of Aquebogue, Linda Bird of Laurel and Ruth Doroski of Jamesport; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family received visitors Nov. 10 at Reginald H. Tuthill Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service was held Nov. 11 at First Parish Church in Riverhead. Interment was at Sound Avenue Cemetery, also in Riverhead.


Anthony Joseph Bernhard

Longtime Orient resident Anthony Joseph Bernhard died Nov. 9. He was 83 years old.

He was born Dec. 7, 1929, in Brooklyn to Lillian (Russo) and Frank Bernhard and later attended John Jay College in New York City. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps for five years, achieving the rank of staff sergeant and receiving two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart. Following his military service, Mr. Bernhard was a detective with the New York City Police Department.

He is survived by his wife, Irene; his son, Keith, of New York City; his sister, Eleanor Cinquemani; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, Nov. 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, where a wake will be held at 3:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will take place Monday, Nov. 18, at 10 a.m. at St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport. Cremation was private. Burial will take place at Calverton National Cemetery at a date to be determined.

Susanne D. Smith

Susanne D. Smith of Hampton Bays died Nov. 10, 2013. She was 84 years old.

She was born in New York City Aug. 25, 1929, to Nelson and Dorothy (Clifton) Demarest.

Susanne was a longtime resident of Shelter Island before moving to Hampton Bays 17 years ago. Family members recalled that she enjoyed spending time watching birds.

Surviving are her children, William Smith of Shelter Island, Susan Klapp of Florida, Douglas Smith of Georgia and James Smith of Bayville; her brother, Richard Demarest of Shelter Island; six grandchildren, Garrett, Brian, Jed, Alex, Benjamin and Derick; and one great-grandson, Sam.

Susanne was cremated Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013. Arrangements were handled by DeFriest-Grattan-Shelter Island Funeral Home.

Evelyn F. Van Tuyl

Longtime Greenport resident Evelyn F. Van Tuyl passed on at her home Nov. 6, 2013, two days after her 86th birthday.

Evelyn was born at Misericordia Hospital in the Bronx Nov. 4, 1927, to Howard C. and Gladys (Erickson) Flynn and graduated from White Plains High School in 1945.

During World War II, her father’s job as picture editor of Wide World Photos and The New York Times Rotogravure took him to Washington, D.C., where he was picture chief for the Office of War Information. The rest of the family spent most of its time in Orient and Ev worked as a clerk at Tappert’s Book Store in Greenport. It was there that she met Rod Van Tuyl, who claimed to be looking for a particular book. They were married May 1, 1948, at Orient Congregational Church and made their home on Aquaview Avenue in East Marion before moving to Greenport in 1957.

Ev served as a trustee of Floyd Memorial Library and was secretary of the Greenport Shakespeare Club for many years. A Girl Scout in her youth, she later became a troop leader. For 30 years, Ev worked at Preston’s Ship & Sea Gallery, where she made some of her dearest friendships and enjoyed bringing homemade fudge and brownies to her co-workers.

Evie enjoyed knitting, making huge Christmas stockings for every member of the family, doing crossword puzzles and watching “Monk,” Joel Osteen, the Yankees and any professional football game. Her greatest love was being “Mom” and “Gram” to a family who will miss her wonderful sense of humor and her always being there with support, encouragement and a few bucks for snacks.

Predeceased by her husband, Roderick, in 1996; her daughter-in-law Janet Van Tuyl in 1994; and brothers Richard and Thomas Flynn in 2011, she is survived by her sons, Colin (Leslee), of Greenport, and Mark (Joani), of Eldersburg, Md.; her daughter, Andrea (Robert) King of Orient; grandchildren Kelly and Matthew Van Tuyl, Adam, Christian and Emily King and Brianna Van Tuyl; great-grandsons Dylan and Colby Van Tuyl; and sister-in-law, Virginia Flynn of Chester, Md. “Aunt Ev” is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family will welcome friends Friday, Nov. 15, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. Private burial at Cutchogue Cemetery will be followed by a memorial service at Orient Congregational Church Saturday, Nov. 16, at 11 a.m., the Rev. Ann Van Cleef officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites those wishing to make a lasting tribute in Ev’s memory to make a donation to the Orient Congregational Church Memorial Fund.

Gordon Elwood Rackett

Lifelong East Marion resident Gordon Elwood Rackett died Nov. 10 at his home. He was 86 years old.

He was born in Greenport May 6, 1927, to Elwood A. and Gladys J. (Ankers) Rackett. He graduated from Greenport High School in 1944 and then graduated as a licensed aircraft and engine mechanic from Roosevelt Aviation School at Roosevelt Field in Mineola. For five years he served in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of technical sergeant. In the 1940s, Mr. Rackett worked as a trap fisherman on a local sailing sloop, followed by employment at Suffolk Aircraft in Westhampton and nine years at Mattituck Airbase. Most recently, he had worked for 30 years as a mechanical technician at Brookhaven National Laboratory. He married Nathalie Louise Bohlke on Jan. 8, 1950.

Family members said that for 50 years, Mr. Rackett enjoyed singing barbershop music with the Peconic and Whalers chapters of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America. He also volunteered with the “Tuesday Morning crew” at Oysterponds Historical Society, was a member of the building and grounds committee and the choir at Orient Congregational Church and belonged to the East Marion Cemetery Association and East Marion War Memorial Association.

He was a former chief of the East Marion Fire Department and had served on the Oysterponds school board. According to family members, Mr. Rackett also enjoyed boating, clamming, fishing, boat building, woodworking, furniture restoration and vegetable gardening and had obtained his private pilot’s license.

Predeceased by his son, Glenn, in 1997, Mr. Rackett is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nathalie, of East Marion; his daughters, Susan N. Rackett-Rossetti, also of East Marion, and Lauretta H. Rahmes of High Springs, Fla.; his sister, Virginia R. Beasley of Mattoon, Ill.; and two grandsons.

A service will take place Friday, Nov. 15, at 1:30 p.m. at Orient Congregational Church, the Rev. Ann Van Cleef officiating. Private interment will take place at East Marion Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Memorial donations may be made to Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton or Bide-A-Wee animal shelter in Westhampton.

Peter Paul Dykovitz

Lifelong East Marion resident Peter Paul Dykovitz died Nov. 10 at Stony Brook University Hospital. He was 95 years old.

He was born May 29, 1918, at Eastern Long Island Hospital to Sophie and Stanley Dykovitz. He played football and ran track at Greenport High School, graduating in 1938.

Mr. Dykovitz went on to study diesel engines and related subjects at a technical school in Brooklyn, then joined the Merchant Marine. At sea when World War II began, he served as a petty officer on a troop ship and made four trips to the Mediterranean, twice bringing back prisoners of war, family members said. During his service, he enrolled in the Merchant Marine Officers Training School at Fort Trumbull in New London, Conn., becoming an engineer with the rank of ensign. He was serving in Belgium when the war in Europe ended and was back home at the end of the war with Japan. After the war, Mr. Dykovitz worked at the United Nations for five years and then at Plum Island for 25. He retired early and family members said he “lived longer than he worked.”

He was an active member of the Riverhead Moose, American Legion Post 185 in Greenport and the Merchant Marine Peconic Bay Chapter for retired officers. He also belonged to the Triangle Yacht Club in Greenport. According to family members, he loved spending time on the water in one of his several boats and enjoyed working on his house, gardening and traveling in the United States and abroad.

Predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Camelia, Mr. Dykovitz is survived by his brother, Stanley, and relatives in New Jersey.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Nov. 14, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. A graveside service and burial with military honors will take place Friday, Nov. 15, at the family plot in St. Agnes Cemetery, also in Greenport.

Henry J. Wojewocki

Lifelong Riverhead resident Henry J. Wojewocki died at his home Nov. 9. He was 97 years old.

He was born Oct. 28, 1916, in Riverhead to John and Victoria (Sobieski) Wojewocki. Family members said that he loved being a farmer at the Wojewocki Brothers family farm. He also loved travelling and frequently visited relatives in Poland.

Predeceased by his brother, Zigmund, Mr. Wojewocki is survived by his sisters, Stacia Ficner and Helen P. Krupski, both of Cutchogue, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 11 a.m. at St. Isidore R.C. Church followed by interment at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Cemetery, both in Riverhead.

Edwin W. Koraleski

Born Feb. 16, 1921, in Orient to Stephen Koroleski and Rose Bugelic, Eddie, as he was known by his family and friends, married Felicia Zultoski on April 27, 1942. He worked on the family farm and then worked on Plum Island before retiring in 1986.

Eddie passed away Nov. 12, 2013, and is survived by his wife of 71 years; three daughters, Barbara Clifford of California, Felicia (Tom) Geiger of Peconic and Brenda (Tom) Burchard of Utah; three granddaughters, Cathy Clifford of California, Felicia (Gary) Gillanders of Southold and Michelle (Zac) Tomaszewski of Laurel; and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Shawn Tomaszewski.

Cremation was private. Services will be held by the family at a future date. Arrangements were entrusted to Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the National Parkinson Foundation.

Joseph G. Young of Kings Park died Nov. 7, 2013. He was 61 years old.

Born in Brooklyn May 12, 1952, to Ann (Kaylor) and Joseph Young, he attended Bay Shore and Brentwood schools.

He enjoyed art and loved music, family members said.

Predeceased by his parents, Mr. Young is survived by his siblings, Candy and Kevin, both of upstate New York, Annie Lopez and Dawn, both of Utah, Guy, of Rocky Point, Robert, of Long Island, and Theresa Haskell of Washington State.

Visiting hours will take place Saturday, Nov. 16, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, followed at 11 a.m. by funeral services at Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at Laurel Cemetery.

Monica Kneuer

Monica Kneuer of Peconic died Nov. 12 after a short illness.

Born in Uniondale in 1940 to Joseph and Margaret (Stasko) Kneuer, she attended St. Barnabas School in Bellmore and Massapequa High School. She received an associate degree in art from Farmingdale State College and a Bachelor of Arts in arts education from SUNY/New Paltz.

After several years in Ocala, Fla., she moved to West Babylon and served for more than 25 years as an art teacher in the Deer Park School District. A much beloved educator, she inspired thousands of students with her kindness, creativity and sense of fun – and remained a close friend to many.

Upon retiring to Peconic, she volunteered with a number of organizations, including as a donor and driver for Lighthouse International services for the blind. Ms. Kneuer was an active member of St. Patrick Parish in Southold and her local Homemakers Club. She was an accomplished photographer as well as visual artist, and her photography was recognized with numerous citations and awards. She was exceedingly proud to have her work featured on the Greenport tourism poster and to have showcased her crafts on “The Carol Duvall Show” on HGTV.

Ms. Kneuer recovered remarkably well from a debilitating stroke three years ago. Formerly an intrepid world traveler, she relished her remaining years on her beloved North Fork with her family and many friends, including her compassionate and loyal caregiver, Madge Bunting. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her niece Claire Margaret Kneuer. She is survived by her brother, Joe, and sister-in-law, Terry Kneuer, of Montclair, N.J.; her nephew Paul Kneuer and his wife, Melissa, also of Montclair, and their daughter, Elizabeth, of Manhattan; nieces Anne Kneuer of Sea Bright, N.J., and Devery Volpe and her husband, Vincent, and their children, Claudia and Christopher, of Haworth, N.J.; nephew John Kneuer and his wife, Mimi, and their children, Joseph and Christine, of Washington, D.C.; and many first and second cousins.

Visiting hours will be Sunday, Nov. 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment will follow at approximately 1 p.m. at St. Charles Cemetery in Farmingdale.

Henry M. Krupski

Former Southold resident Henry M. Krupski died Oct. 3 at Martin Memorial Hospital South in Stuart, Fla., at the age of 90.

He was born in Southold Jan. 22, 1923, to Vincent and Amelia (Dubovick) Krupski and married Mary Tysko of Springfield, Vt., with whom he celebrated 66 years of marriage this past September. After spending his early years working the family farm on South Harbor Road in Southold, he became employed by the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of New York and subsequently became an independent distributor for the company, servicing a territory that stretched from Southampton to Montauk.

Henry was a member of the Teamsters Soft Drink Union, the Loyal Order of Moose and Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, clamming and, upon retirement, became an avid golfer. His greatest passion, however, was spending time with his wife and family, always teaching and mentoring his children, grandchildren and, ultimately, great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Henry is survived by his daughter, Terri Kudlinski, and her husband, Ted, of Palm City, Fla.; his son, Ray, and his wife, Cissy, of Southold; five grandchildren: Michael Kudlinski of Stuart, Fla., Kevin Kudlinski of Royal Palm, Fla., Melissa Downs of Huntington, Allison Salmaggi of Riverhead and Capt. Matthew Krupski, currently deployed to Afghanistan. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Brendon and Timmy Kudlinski, Giana Kudlinski and Jack Krupski.

The family received visitors Oct. 6 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. A funeral Mass was held Oct. 7 at Our Lady of Ostrabrama R.C. Church in Cutchogue, with interment following at St. Patrick R.C. Cemetery in Southold.

Albert James Senzatimore

Albert James Senzatimore died suddenly Oct. 23 in Truckee, Calif. He was 69 years old.

A resident of San José, Calif., he was born June 26, 1944, in Brooklyn to Frances (Argento) and James Senzatimore. He and his sister, Vivian, grew up in New Suffolk and later moved to South Jamesport, where family members said they spent many fun summers with cousins and friends.

He graduated from Riverhead High School in 1961 and worked with his uncle as an electrician’s apprentice. A member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Mr. Senzatimore retired at age 59 from Torres Electric, where he had worked as a foreman.

In 1972, Mr. Senzatimore moved to California. Family members said he loved the outdoors and enjoyed skiing, backpacking and rock climbing. He also studied photography, winning awards for his black and white photos. In 1979 he became an aviation student, earned his pilot’s license, and made a lifelong friend, Gary Trovinger, his flight instructor.

During this time, Mr. Senzatimore was also able to pursue his lifelong passion for fishing, including taking trips to Montauk, Mexico and Alaska. He volunteered at the Santa Clara Historical Railroad Society and Niles Canyon Railway, where his knowledge of electrical work and trains was greatly appreciated. He traveled, fished, rode his Harley Davidson motorcycle, and fished some more, according to family, and also enjoyed spending time with his five grandchildren and helping his daughter Maria, who has Down Syndrome.

Family members said Mr. Senzatimore made and kept many good friends throughout his life. They also said he was an amazing cook, enjoyed family celebrations, and had a great laugh. He had a zest for life and will be missed, they said.

Mr. Senzatimore is survived by his wife and childhood sweetheart, Susan Terry; their three daughters, Maria, Nancy Bracewell and Gina Senzatimore Villarreal; his sister, Vivian; and five grandchildren.

Estelle O’Connell

Mattituck resident Estelle (Cookie) O’Connell died Nov. 14 at Cornell Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital. She was 90 years old.

She was born in Cutchogue Oct. 9, 1923, to Paul and Sophie Kaloski, one of eight children: Chet Koloski (deceased), Mike Kaloski, Francis Zelinski, Matthew Kaloski (deceased), Irene (Yippy) Sawastynowicz, Helen Long and Dorothy Mulhall.

She attended Rider College and worked for a union delegate, where she met and married Maurice O’Connell (deceased). She also worked as a secretary to the U.S. customs director at Kennedy Airport. A farmer’s daughter, she loved the outside and gardening. Retiring to Mattituck, she joined the Mattituck Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She leaves behind three children: Leslie (Joe) Esposito, Kathleen (Steve) Pritchard and Parnell O’Connell; three beloved grandchildren: Joseph, Stephen and Morgan Pritchard; and many nieces and nephews.

The family received visitors Nov. 18 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. A funeral Mass took place Nov. 19 at Our Lady of Ostrabama R.C. Church in Cutchogue. Interment was at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery, also in Cutchogue.

Eileen Coly

Eileen Coly of Greenport passed away in Manhattan Nov. 18, 2013, at the age of 97.

From 1970 until her retirement in 2011, she served as president of the Parapsychology Foundation, which was founded by her mother, Eileen J. Garrett. She continued to share her mother’s vision for the organization, which is to formulate a multi-disciplinary international approach to the study of psychic phenomena with an emphasis on scientific methodology and education.

Born and educated in England, she traveled extensively with her mother, a famed psychic and author. They were separated during World War II and she remained in England, surviving the London Blitz. Settling in the United States in l947, she worked at Creative Age Press and “Tomorrow” magazine before joining the Parapsychology Foundation in 1966. She received the 2001 Parapsychological Association’s Outstanding Career Award “for her generous support and dedication to the science of parapsychology.”

With her French-born husband, Robert R. Coly, now deceased, she raised two children, Lisette and Robert Louis Coly. She is survived by her daughter, Lisette, who continues to run the Parapsychology Foundation in Greenport and Manhattan, as well as her son-in-law, George E. Damalas, and three grandchildren: George Robert Damalas, Anastasia Eileen Damalas and Robert Alan Coly. She had resided in Greenport since 1990.

Former Cutchogue resident Eleanor E. Austin of Dickinson, N.Y., died Nov. 17 at Elizabeth Church Manor Nursing Home in Dickinson. She was 91 years old.

She was born in Greenport May 22, 1922, to Lloyd and Amanda (Verity) Blydenburgh and was a homemaker and lifelong member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport. According to family members, Ms. Austin was a spunky and funny woman who was “put on earth” to help others. She loved life, flowers and being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, they said.

Predeceased by her husband, Elbert, in 1997, Ms. Austin is survived by her children, Elbert, of Mastic, Elaine Carril of Newark Valley, N.Y., Eleanna Sparling of Greenport and Ernest Wayne of Pennsylvania; 12 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A funeral service will take place Wednesday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greenport. Cremation will be private, followed by burial at Cutchogue Cemetery, Thursday, Nov. 21, at 3 p.m.

Jose Pirir

Jose Pirir of Mattituck died suddenly Nov. 16 at Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, N.Y. He was 30 years old and had been a carpenter with Burger Construction in Cutchogue.

Funeral arrangements, incomplete at presstime, are in the care of DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes in Mattituck. Mr. Pirir will be returned home for burial in his native San Raymundo, Guatemala.

Richard E. Oddon

Richard E. Oddon of Mattituck died at his home Nov. 14, 2013. He was 84 years old.

He was born May 7, 1929, in Northport to John Natale and Beryl (Hertzler) Oddon.

On Aug. 28, 1949, he married Eileen Daw in Northport and together they made their home in Mattituck for the past 46 years. He had been a drywall contractor and the owner/operator of Richard Oddon Drywall for 50 years.

Richard was a Jehovah’s Witness and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Surviving are his wife, Eileen; four children, Vicky Canuso of Quogue, Daniel Oddon of Lexington, N.C., Judith Klipp of Wading River and David Oddon of Mattituck; a sister, Beryl Prianti of Wellington, Fla.; seven grandchildren: Douglas Oddon, Jillian Oddon, Aaron Oddon, Derrick Oddon, Anthony “Tony” Oddon, Raymond Klipp and Joshua Klipp; and five and a half great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Richard Oddon, and siblings John, Ronald, Donald and Pauline Ester.

Graveside services were held Nov.18 at Calverton National Cemetery, with Leo Russell officiating. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

Orazio A. Rapuano

Orazio A. Rapuano of Cutchogue died Nov. 12, 2013, at the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook. He was 78 years old.

He was born in Queens July 25, 1935, to Benjamin and Michaelina (Soldovieri) Rapuano. From 1953 to 1956, he served in the U.S. Army.

For many years, he was the proprietor of a stationery store in Corona, Queens. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church and will be remembered for his kindness to the poor.

Surviving are his wife, Julia (née Visaggio) Rapuano, and a brother, Gerard Rapuano of Deer Park.

The family received friends Nov. 15 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated later that morning at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck by Monsignor Joseph W. Staudt. Interment, with U.S. Army honors, was at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Monica Grigonis of Southold died Nov. 19. She was 92 years old.

Funeral arrangements, incomplete at presstime, are in the care of DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes in Southold.

Kathleen Harris Fine

Former Southold resident Kathleen Harris Fine of Bethesda, Md., and Bethany Beach, Del., died Nov. 12, 2013, after a short illness with her family by her side. She was 60.

Kathy was born in Greenport Oct. 20, 1953, to John and Janet Harris of Southold. She graduated from Southold High School in 1971 and the University of Bridgeport, where she majored in English, in 1975.

After college, Kathy relocated to Maryland and began her teaching career at Robert Frost Middle School in Rockville. She had recently retired after 35 years at that school, where she was a highly respected and beloved sixth-grade language arts teacher and team leader. Kathy was instrumental in her school gaining recognition as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. She also served for many years as the outdoor education coordinator for the entire sixth grade.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Robert; her children, Gregory and Allyson; her grandchildren, Brady and Austin; her sister, Patricia Berrill and husband, David; and her niece, Shannon, and nephew, Kevin, and their families.

The family received relatives, friends, teachers and students at Pumphrey Funeral Home in Rockville. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Raphael’s R.C. Church. Kathy was laid to rest at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, Md.
