Anita J. Fiore

Anita J. Fiore of Mattituck died Saturday, May 28, at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue. She was 69 years old.

She was born in New York City Oct. 23, 1946, to Rosaria J. (née Buttitta) and Domenico Cosolito and raised in Greenwich Village. The family moved to Long Island when Anita was a teenager and settled in West Babylon.

A graduate of West Babylon High School, Anita moved to Mattituck in 1971.
For many years, she worked at the 7-Eleven stores in Cutchogue and Southold. In more recent years, she was a home health aide with East End Hospice.

In her leisure time, she enjoyed celebrity gossip and was an avid reader of the Star and Enquirer. She also enjoyed cooking, especially Italian food.

She is survived by two daughters, Sheryl Ann Fiore of Patchogue and Danielle (Ned) Grathwohl of Mattituck; two granddaughters, Skyler and Macie Grathwohl and her fiancé, Richard Gibbs. She was predeceased by her brother, Dennis Cosolito.

Family members said her granddaughters were everything.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m.Thursday, June 2, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Memorial donations to East End Hospice would be appreciated.

Barbara Adams

Barbara Adams, a longtime resident of Peconic, died April 22, 2016, in Kathmandu, Nepal, two days before her 85th birthday as a result of complications following emergency surgery. For the last 50 years, she had divided her time between the East End and Kathmandu. She enjoyed sailing on the bay and frequently attended services at First Universalist Church in Southold. She had planned to move to Peconic Landing this year.

Ms. Adams was a freelance journalist. She first went to Nepal in 1961 to cover the visit of the Queen of England for an Italian magazine. She fell in love with the country and with Prince Basundhara.

Nepal and Peconic became the emotional centers of her life. She was the author of two books, “Barbara’s Nepal” and “Traditional Bhutanese Textiles,” and numerous articles and columns advocating social reform in Nepalese newspapers. She founded the Barbara Peace Foundation in Kathmandu, which makes an annual award to an anti-corruption activist, and has built housing and schools for villagers in western Nepal.

Ms. Adams was predeceased by her father, Foster Adams, her mother, Fran Adams, and her sister, Jody Adams. She is survived by second cousins Wendy Prellwitz of Peconic and Cambridge, Mass., and Henry Prellwitz of Pittsburgh.
Hindu and Buddhist memorial ceremonies have been held in Kathmandu. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 18, at High House, 7134 Indian Neck Lane, Peconic.

Betty Jane Kalin

Betty Jane Kalin, a former resident of Greenport, died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Mattituck on May 30, 2016. She was 89 years old. 

She was born Nov. 16, 1926, to James and Emily Albin in Mattituck and was graduated from Mattituck High School in 1945 and attended Brown’s Business School.

Betty worked for the Cornell Cooperative Extension in Riverhead before her marriage to Herbert Kalin of Greenport on June 18, 1950. After her husband’s death, she worked for Greenport Village as a secretary and at Holy Trinity Church as a teacher’s aide.

She resided in Greenport from 1950 to 2009 when she moved in to the home of her daughter and son-in-law. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles and oil painting until she was diagnosed with macular degeneration in the late 1980s.

Betty was a member of Greenport United Methodist Church. In later years, she enjoyed meeting with the Blind and Sighted Group in Aquebogue and the VIP Group in Peconic.

Predeceased by her husband Herb who was murdered in 1981; she is survived by her children: Jim (Carol) of Greenport, Lew (Irene) Kalin of Milan, Ohio, Susan Zaborowski of Riverhead and Betsy (Rich) Perkins of Mattituck. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, June 2, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 3, at Mattituck Presbyterian Church. Caren Heacock, Pastoral Associate will officiate. Interment will be in the Sterling Cemetery in Greenport.

Barbara C. Solinger

Barbara C. Solinger of Peconic Landing in Greenport died Thursday, May 19, 2016, at home with her family. She was 91. 
The daughter of Clara (Voss) and Orlando Sarriera, Barbara was born Aug. 8, 1924, in Brooklyn. She graduated from East Rockaway High School in 1943. On June 24, 1946, she married Raymond Solinger in Baltimore, Md. They lived in Muttontown for 46 years before Barbara moved to Peconic Landing, where she lived for the past eight years.

Barbara was a mother and homemaker who enjoyed cooking, playing Scrabble and bridge and, most of all, spending time with her family. She was a member of St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport.

Barbara was predeceased by her loving husband, Raymond Solinger, and her adored sons, Robert Solinger and Raymond Solinger Jr.

She was the beloved mother of her daughter Barbara Bartony and son-in-law Alan Bartony, her daughter Laura Solinger and son-in-law Steven Muth, and her daughter-in-law, Carol Solinger. She was also the cherished grandmother of 19 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, all of whom survive her.

A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at St. Agnes R.C. Church. A reception will follow at Peconic Landing. Donations may be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.

Arrangements were entrusted to Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Frank J. Densieski

Fomer Riverhead resident Frank J. Densieski,  died June 2, 2016, at Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center in Greece, N.Y. at the age of 86.

He was born in Center Moriches Oct. 12, 1929, to Mary (née Trojanowski) and Adolph Densieski and was a graduate of Riverhead High School.

Frank served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was assigned to the USS Northampton. After four years of service, he was honorably discharged as a seaman.

On Feb. 6, 1955, he married the former Joyce M. Tyska and together they made their home in Riverhead. For 25 years, he was a weapons technician with Grumman Aircraft.

In 2003, he and Joyce relocated to Hiawassee, Ga. where they lived until 2015. For the past year, they resided in Irondequoit, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife Joyce; three children, Christopher J. Densieski of Rochester, N.Y., Diane Strickland of Roanoke, Texas, and David M. Densieski of Manorville; a brother, Sonny Densieski of Riverhead and five grandchildren, Amanda, Brittany, Chelsea, Andrew and Benjamin J. Densieski. He was predeceased by siblings, Theodore and John Densieski, Althea Cartoski and Florence Sendlewski.

The family received visitors June 6 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck, where funeral services were held, officiated by Dan Reiter. Interment, with U.S. Naval honors took place at  Calverton National Cemetery.

Memorials to Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center, 2652 Ridgeway Ave, Rochester, New York 14626 would be appreciated.

Nancy Louise Charland

Lifelong Greenport resident Nancy Louise Charland died May 23 from natural causes. She was 57. 

She was born in Greenport July 26, 1959, to Margaret and Gabriel Grilli. Ms. Charland received her general educational diploma from Greenport High School and went on to receive her home health aide and certified nursing assistant certifications after attending some college. 

Ms. Charland’s healthcare career ended abruptly in 2011, while employed by Comfort Keepers of Jacksonville, Fla. because of illness. She began working and volunteering again in 2013. 

Ms. Charland served her local community by working for the Village of Greenport in 2009 as the head coordinator of the Kindergarten through 1st grade after-school program at the Greenport Recreation Center. In 2010, she was awarded “Volunteer of the Year” Community Action of Southold Town, which she began volunteering for in 1987. 

Family members said Ms. Charland’s lifelong work was care giving and volunteering. working in hospice care for those who were terminally ill, and helping the homeless however she could. 

Ms. Charland was a current member of New Testament Missionary Outreach in Twin City, Ga. Family members said she was a devout born-again Christian, who served, motivated and inspired others, and was a “natural encourager” to all.

Ms. Charland is survived by her two daughters, Christa Lee Moore of Charleston, S.C. and Naomi Sierra-Jackson of Jacksonville Fla.; her stepfather,Gabriel Grilli of Greenport five grandchildren; her four sisters, Ruth Yoskovich of Greenport, Beth Alexander of Riverhead Kathy Diamond of Orlando, Fla.; Lisa Charland of Arcadia, Fla.; her brother, Jack Grilli; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her mother; brothers, Robbie, Digger, and David and her son, Joshua Sierra Charland.

Visitation and services were held June 4 at  Horton-Mathie Funeral Home, Greenport, NY. Interment will be held at Sterling Cemetery.

Marghretta Ehrenson

Marghretta Ehrenson of Greenport died June 4. She was 85. 

The daughter of Frances (Santangelo) and Walter Brigl, she was born June 6, 1930, in New York City. She received her Masters of Education from New York University.

On July 3, 1960, she married Stanton Ehrenson in Forrest Hills.

Ms. Ehrenson worked as as teacher and in administration for Elmont UFSD for 6 years.

Family members said she enjoyed reading, current events and finance and social activities.

Predeceased by her husband, Ms. Ehrenson is survived by her daughters, Ruth Metcalf and Sarah (Ehrenson) Miller; her son-in-law and four grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Saturday, June 18, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. Interment will be private. A reception will follow at Peconic Landing in Greenport from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.

Bill Olson

Former Greenport resident Bill Olson died at home in Springfield, Va. April 28 from complications following a fall. He was 81. His family moved to Eastern Long Island after World War II , when his father, Dr. Albert William Olson, returned from the war and opened a medical practice on Main Street in his home town of Greenport.

Family members said Mr. Olson loved the area and the sea. After graduating
from the State University of New York Maritime College at Fort Schuyler, he had a career with the U.S. Navy, serving on-board several ships. At every opportunity he would return to Greenport with his wife and four children to visit family and old friends in the area.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie; his three sons, Steven, Thomas, and James; his sister Helen Hansen of Cutchogue; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Katharine.

Josephine E. Conrad

Former Southold resident Josephine E. Conrad of Venice Fla., died April 22. She was 99.

Ms. Conrad retired from Southold High School as a cook. In her earlier years, she was a hair dresser.

When Ms. Conrad lived in Southold, she belonged to a bridge club and was active in her church. Family members she loved to sew, bake and dance.

Predeceased by her husband of 77 years, John Conrad and her daughter, Janet Conrad-Hrisko, Ms. Conrad is survived by her son, Thomas, of Southold, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Interment will take place at 11 a.m. Friday, June 10 at Calverton National Cemetery.

Russell L. Salerno

Russell L. Salerno of Mattituck passed away June 8, 2016. He was 67 years old.

Born in Brooklyn in 1948 to Lucy and Philip Salerno, he was the devoted husband of Barbara.

Russ served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Upon his honorable discharge, he became self-employed as the owner and manager of rental properties in New York and Long Island.

The family will receive visitors Sunday, June 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 13, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Mattituck. Interment with U.S. Army honors will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Donald John Vazquez

Donald John Vazquez, devoted husband, proud father and loving grandfather and great-grandfather, aged 85, of Basking Ridge, N.J., peacefully left this world on May 28, 2016. 

Don was born in Locust Valley on July 23, 1930, to Gregory Vazquez of Lugo, Spain, and Madeline McDonough Vazquez of Glen Cove. He graduated in 1949 from Mineola High School, where he excelled on the football and baseball teams. He attended Farmingdale College and played semi-pro football for the Aggies. He graduated with a degree from New York Tech in 1981.

Don worked at Grumman Aerospace for 34 years before fully retiring. Originally from Williston Park, Don and his family were longtime residents of Smithtown and Southold.

In 1963, Don was the All Events Bowling Champion of Nassau and Suffolk counties. He was an accomplished golfer with a hole-in-one and winner of a number of longest drive competitions. In addition, Don was a Suffolk County High School football referee and baseball umpire for many years. He was a proud father who spent much of his retirement years enjoying music, singing and visiting his children and grandchildren all over the country. Nothing made Don happier than talking about his family.

Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean (Popielaski) Vazquez of Williston Park; sons Donald “Bud” Vazquez Jr. of Bedford, Mass., James “Corky” Vazquez of Gambrills, Md., and Alan Vazquez of Miramar Beach, Fla.; and daughter Donna (Vazquez) Galindez of Hoboken, N.J. He was the proud grandfather of Christine, Thomas, James Jr., Daniel, Marley, Christian, Alexander John (“AJ”) and Sarah Georgina; great-grandfather of Levi; and admired father-in-law of Ann Vazquez, Sylvia Vazquez, Molly Vazquez and Edgar Galindez. He was brother to Marie Howard, Delores Morehouse, Rita Piraino and Gregory Vazquez Jr. Don was also an uncle many times over on both sides of his family.

A memorial Mass will be held Monday, June 13, at Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge.

Lawrence W. Murdock Jr.

Former Cutchogue resident Lawrence W. Murdock Jr. died May 7 at the Bailey Center for Caring in St. Augustine, Fla. He was 88.

He was born in Bay Shore, NY, to parents Kuni-Gunda (Lauger) and Lawrence W. Murdock. He lived in Cutchogue before moving to St. Augustine.

Mr. Murdock previously had been a member of the Southold Town Board and Cutchogue Fire Department. For most of his life he worked in the liquor industry.

He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen Murdock, and son Lawrence W. Murdock III. He is survived by his children Sandra-Jo Puritis, Linda Rana and Steven Menzer.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 25, at Shepherd of the Coast Lutheran Church in Palm Coast, Fla.

John C. Scanlan

John C. Scanlan of Cutchogue died June 12 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. He was 76.

The son of David and Jane Scanlan, he was born Aug. 9, 1939, in Copiague. He graduated from Lindenhurst High School in 1958 and Farmingdale State College in 1972.

Mr. Scanlan served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1961 to 1965. For 20 years, he was a sergeant with the Suffolk County Police Department and retired in 1985.

From 1975 to 1988, Mr. Scanlan owned and operated The Tuna, a charter fishing boat out of Orient Point.

He was a member of the Suffolk County PBA, the Suffolk County Superior Officers Association, the Suffolk County Police Conference, the Suffolk County Police Association, Southold American Legion and Riverhead Loyal Order of the Moose.

Family members said he enjoyed fishing and spending time with family.

Predeceased by his five siblings, Mr. Scanlan is survived by his wife, Carol, and 20 nieces and nephews.

Cremation was private. Arrangements were in the care of Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.
