Diane R. (Rolle) Miller of Aquebogue died suddenly Dec. 16 at the age of 62.

She was born Feb. 18, 1953, in Riverhead and attended St. John’s Elementary and Mercy High School in Riverhead. She received an associate degree from Virginia Intermont College in fashion merchandising.

After college she began working for Saks Fifth Avenue in Southampton as a seamstress and worked her way through the ranks to become the operations manager for many different stores throughout the United States including Cleveland, Dallas and Stamford, Conn., to name a few.

She met her husband Kenneth Miller in Dallas in 1986. They met at Addison Airport in Texas while Diane was flying with her brother, Mark Rolle. Diane learned to fly at the age of 17 and received her student pilot license while in high school. Diane and Mark got their love of flying from their father, Walter Rolle. Ken is also a pilot and certified aircraft mechanic. Diane and Ken owned an airplane that they built and flew throughout the United States to visit friends and family as far away as California. So aviation was an important part of her life.

Diane left Saks Fifth Avenue when new ownership took over in 1993 and returned to Riverhead to work in the family business. She kept her father and brother in line until Rolle Brothers closed in 2005. Diane went back into the aviation business and worked at Mattituck Aviation until it closed in 2010. In addition Diane worked part-time at East End Sporting Goods. Diane then went back to work into the retail business and after volunteering for East End Hospice for many years, became manager of the hospice thrift shop, where she worked until her death.

Diane always had a love for cats. From the time she was a child, she was never without one or two cats in her home. Diane also spent many years in the flower gardens around her house.

Predeceased by her mother Jean (Hutchinson) Rolle in 1981 and her father, Walter Rolle in 2009; Diane will be missed by her husband; her brother Mark and his wife, Kay; her nephews, Matthew and Mark Rolle and all her friends.

The family will receive visitors Monday, Dec. 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Saint John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Interment will take place at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Basil “Pete” DeCastro

Basil “Pete” DeCastro, a longtime resident of Springs and Sag Harbor, died of cancer at home on the evening of Dec. 18, 2015.

Born in Sag Harbor Sept. 16, 1935, Basil Gordon DeCastro was the son of Astrid and Gordon DeCastro. In 1953, Pete graduated from Pierson High School in Sag Harbor and then attended Farmingdale Agricultural and Technical College from 1955 to 1957. He served several years in the National Guard before settling into a full-time career as a carpenter and builder — a profession he actively pursued until the very end of his life.

Pete had a “hands-on” approach to life and could justifiably point with pride to the many homes in the Hamptons area that he had built over the last 60 years. In semi-retirement he continued to do what he loved best by volunteering his skills to Habitat for Humanity and in helping renovate parts of Christ Church in Sag Harbor, while continuing to build houses.

In addition to building and excavating with his John Deere tractor, his favorite pastime was boating — most surely influenced by his heritage from two generations of DeCastros that made their living locally on the water in Sag Harbor. Their spirits must have smiled to see Pete zipping around the inlet at Bay Point in his Achilles raft or motoring about Gardiners Bay in his beloved Viking, September’s Song.

When not in Sag Harbor or Springs, he and his wife, Dale, could be found on Marco Island in Florida, where they enjoyed the warm winters and Pete would take his beloved 1952 Chevrolet pickup to car shows.

Pete was predeceased by his first wife, the former Margaret Helmdag, and his daughter, Barbara Margaret DeCastro.

Pete is survived by his second wife, the former Laura “Dale” Corwin Grathwohl; his son, James, of Delray Beach, Fla., and his granddaughter Jamie Primer and great-granddaughter, McKenna, both living in Carlsbad, Calif.; and Dale’s family, who all loved him dearly: Laurie Austin, Ned Grathwohl, Glen Grathwohl and their families, including grandchildren Skyler, Macie, Bryce and Garret Grathwohl and Mark, Michael and David Austin, and great-grandchildren, Amelia and Jace Austin. Also surviving Pete are his three sisters, Jane Cahill of Holbrook, Diane Scholtz of Naples, Fla., and Nancy Merrit of Sag Harbor.

Interment will take place Tuesday, Dec. 22, at Oakland Cemetery in Sag Harbor following a burial Mass at Christ Church. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made to East End Hospice, P.O. Box 1048, Westhampton Beach, NY 11978.

Arrangements were entrusted to Yardley & Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor.

This is a paid notice.

Ann Shengold, 62, died Nov. 26 at home in Mattituck with her mother Paula by her side, after a year-and-a-half struggle with lung cancer.

Her creativity was an inspiration to all who knew her, including friends, co-workers, family and strangers. She was director of the Smithtown Arts Council, where she worked for more than three years, and then assumed the position of director of the Knight Gallery of Spirit Square Arts Center in Charlotte, N.C.. When she left, she was missed by her colleagues, who spoke of the joy her innovative and artistic decisions brought to the Center. As an art administrator, she was known for bringing the best in national and international art to every venue she ever worked.

She spent a year of personal growth and retreat as the William Steeple Davis resident in Orient, continuing to develop the artistic gift with which she was born. In the 1990s, she further expanded her spirit and those of her acquaintances as she became a Reiki Master. She shared her expertise and love for art at the Parrish Museum in Southampton and then served as the Museum Director for the Montauk Lighthouse.

Throughout her illness, she was most comforted by her daily trips to New Suffolk Beach, where the consoling beauty of the surroundings fed her soul. She was a Muse to so many. Her spirit remains a shining inspiration.

Carl enjoyed many hobbies, some of which were sailing and maintaining his old wooden sailboat, model railroading, working on cars and just about any type of woodworking project.
