Born May 28, 1929, he was the son of Anna and John Zuhoski. He is predeceased by his brother, John, and sister, Helen Orlowski. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Zuhoski, to whom he was married for over 65 years, the one and only true love of his life. Taken from a letter written to Shirley on Sept. 28, 1947, “Whenever you’re in my arms I feel as if I am in heaven.” He is survived by his children, Nancy Sacks of Mattituck, Denise Trifiletti (husband, Frank) of Jamesport, Maria Gaydosik (husband, Michael) of Mattituck and Alexander Zuhoski (wife, Therese) of Riverhead. He was passionate about farming and to the day he passed, he would speak fondly of the friends and memories garnered in those years. He later went on to become the sole caretaker at Kimogener Point, where he worked for 31 years. With kindness and compassion, he brought an unmatchable work ethic and dedication that went beyond his daily duties. Residents were known to refer to him as their second Dad, as he saw a generation grow within their community.

Alex was a man of strong faith. Sunday he never missed an 8 a.m. mass at Our Lady of Ostrabrama, where he always sat in the first pew. His belief and faith was a part of his fabric; his very essence. He was also an active member of the Knights of Columbus for many years.

Alex also felt strongly about serving his community. He joined the Cutchogue Fire Department in April 1948 becoming the 179th member of the department and remained an active member at which time he became an honorary member. His service was a great source of pride for him.

Alex was a kind, gentle and loving man. All who knew him will remember the near perpetual smile on his face and the kind words he would often impart. He was a proud man and had an unrelenting love for his family, faith and country. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

David Wilcox Allison Jr

David Wilcox Allison Jr.

David Wilcox Allison Jr., longtime resident of Cutchogue and Garden City, died peacefully Oct. 20, 2015, at Hospice Inn of Melville.

Dave was executive vice president with IBM Corporation beginning in 1965 and was responsible for the data processing department, which was the precursor to the desktop computer. In later years, he became publisher of The Bayside Times Publishing Corporation, ex-chief of the Garden City Fire Department, manager at the Garden City Hotel and parks commissioner for the Town of Southold.

While living in Garden City, Dave and his wife, Carol, raised three children, Cindy, Kevin and Nancy. Dave was active in the community after moving there in 1967. He became a member of the Garden City Fire Department and held several positions before becoming chief in 1980. Dave was also heavily involved with the Nassau County Firemen’s Exempt Association for many years. He was instrumental and led the team for relocation of one of the last remaining Vanderbilt Toll Houses to its current location on 7th Street, where it now houses the Garden City Chamber of Commerce.

Dave retired in 1985 from IBM headquarters in White Plains, N.Y. He then became involved with the family business of weekly newspapers, which his mother ran until her death in 1977, and worked along with his wife until the newspapers were sold. Upon retirement and the sale of the newspapers, Carol and Dave moved from Garden City after 30 years to their East End home in Cutchogue.

Retirement never suited Dave much. Once a full-time resident of Cutchogue, Dave began a writing career as golf editor at The Suffolk Times. He wrote a weekly column for several years, then went into real estate, working at Abatelli Realty and the Daniel Gale Agency and selling several homes on the North Fork he loved so much.

At age 68, Dave decided to get into the political ring as one of Southold’s park commissioners. In that unpaid elected position, he oversaw renovations at several beaches in the area and established friendships with so many. While doing this, he also became president of the Fleet’s Neck Property Owners Association. Dave retired fully at the age of 78.

Dave and Carol were regulars, along with their dear friends, seven days a week at Karen’s Deli in Cutchogue for daily breakfast pow-wows.

Dave leaves behind his loving wife of 57 years, Carol (née Burger); their children, Cindy (Tim) Philbin, Kevin (Linda) Allison and Nancy (Michael) Koenig; and five grandchildren, Ashley and Kevin Allison, Ryan and Mikey Koenig and Alli Philbin.

Cremation was private. The family will receive visitors Sunday, Nov. 1, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Costner-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A Mass with military honors will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in Mattituck.

Local illustrator, painter, cartoonist Rob White dies at 70

White

New Suffolk resident Rob White, a man of myriad talents — ranging from painting, to illustrating, to editorial cartooning, to landscape architecture and substance abuse counseling — died Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. He was 70.

The cause of death was mesothelioma, a form of cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, according to his wife, Kate Altman, who survives him.

Mr. White may be best remembered locally as an award-winning editorial cartoonist for The Suffolk Times and its sister publications, The News-Review of Riverhead and The Shelter Island Reporter. His cartoons, which appeared in the newspapers mostly in the 1980s and ’90s, were honored on many occasions as the best in the state by the New York Press Association.

His attachment to the North Fork began as a young man, when he came to Cutchogue during the summer months to work on the fruit farm of his late aunt and uncle, Anne and John Wickham. He moved here permanently in the early 1970’s, when one of his first assignments was to illustrate a wine bottle label for the fledgling Hargrave Vineyard. Many years later, when his paintings were featured at the Jedediah Hawkins gallery in Jamesport, vineyard co-founder Louisa Hargrave surprised him with several bottles bearing copies of the original label. “Rob was touched. That was really sweet,” Ms. Altman said this week.

Rob White was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on August 22, 1945, the son of Kendall White and Margaret Lupton White, who survives him. His mother had been born and raised in Mattituck and was related through marriage to the Wickhams.

The family moved to Ithaca, N.Y., when Rob was an infant, and in later years lived in Westfield, Mass., and Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

He studied landscape architecture at Cornell University in Ithaca, graduating in 1967, and was working in that field a few years later in Ohio when he was contacted by a college friend, singer-songwriter Harry Chapin. It seemed Mr. White and Mr. Chapin both had sung in a Cornell a cappella group, the Sherwoods, and folk singer wanted to know if Mr. White wanted to join him on the road. He did, and for the next few years he served as Harry Chapin’s sound man and road manager, according to Ms. Altman.

Most notable, however, was Mr. White’s role as Mr. Chapin’s illustrator, as he supplied all the drawings for Mr. Chapin’s 1975 book, “Looking…Seeing — Poems and Lyrics by Harry Chapin.”

In addition to his work as an editorial cartoonist, in his years on the North Fork Mr. White was employed as a landscape architect and substance abuse counselor at Eastern Long Island’s Quannacut unit.

Mr. White painted steadily beginning in the 1990’s, but only had an opportunity to paint full time after he retired two years ago due to his illness, according to his wife. And he continued to paint up until a month before his recent hospitalization, she said.

In addition to his wife and mother, who divides her time between Cutchogue and Bradenton, Fla., Mr. White is survived by a son, Gregory White; a stepdaughter, Emma Rose Mead; two stepchildren from a previous marriage, Marci and Ryan McDermott; a brother, Kendall, of Cleveland, Ohio; and two sisters, Peggy Gravelle, of Oshkosh, Wisc., and Susan White, of Bradenton. He was preceded in death by his father and his brother, Ted.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Coster-Heppner Funeral Home of Cutchogue. In addition, Ms. Altman said she is planning a “big party” to celebrate her husband’s life in the near future.
