Joel Elliot Kobrin

Joel Elliot Kobrin of Mattituck died Aug. 18, 2013. He was 66 years old.

He was born March 5, 1947, in Brooklyn to Herb and Kitty Kobrin and worked as a cabinetmaker in Brooklyn. He also owned Majestic Cabinets in Babylon.

Mr. Kobrin moved to Mattituck in 1994 with his life partner, Lynn Harpell. Together, they opened Peddlers Rest Antiques in 1995 and, more recently, made frames for custom framing.

In addition to Ms. Harpell, he is survived by his son, Josh (Lily), and their children, Brian, Liz and Sophie; his stepdaughter, Kim (Jerry) Kinnaird and their daughter, Lillian; and his sister, Barbara (Ron), and their son, Danny.

Cremation was private.

Catherine Tracy

Catherine Tracy of Cutchogue died Aug. 19 at Stony Brook University Medical Center. She was 84 years old.

She was born Nov. 20, 1928, to William D. and Mary (Crimmins) Tracy and had been an administrative assistant at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church in Riverhead. Family members said she enjoyed knitting and loved the New York Giants and New York Rangers.

Ms. Tracy is survived by her daughters, Kathy Gaffga and Patty Ward, both of Southold, Mary Mitchell of Riverhead and Jean Ryan of Lunenberg, Mass.; her sons, Al Cline of Warrenton, Va., and Kevin Cline of Colleyville, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors Wednesday, Aug. 21, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. A funeral service will take place Thursday, Aug. 22, at 9:45 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist R.C. Church. Interment will be at Bright View Cemetery in Warrenton, Va.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association.

John F. Irving

John F. Irving, a 17-year resident of Nassau Point, Cutchogue, died July 30 at his home. He was 71 years old.

He was born April 29, 1942, in Rhinebeck, N.Y., to Muriel (Payton) and John F. Irving Sr. He served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1969 and in the New York State Army National Guard from 2002 to 2007. He and his wife, Mary Anne, were married in 1994 in Port Jefferson.

Mr. Irving was a retired assistant deputy warden with the New York City Department of Corrections and was also retired from Sunrise Coach Lines in Greenport.

Family members said he enjoyed model trains and studying history and genealogy. He especially loved his German shepherd, Sabre.

He is survived by his wife; his children, Athena Geraci of Newburgh, N.Y., and Alexis Scarfogliero-Odessa of Florida; his stepchildren, T.R. Schilb of Hingham, Mass., Laura Shepherd of St. James, Deborah Schilb of Huntington and Kristina Miller of Cumming, Ga.; his brother Charles, of Suffern, N.Y.; and 12 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Robert.

The family received visitors Aug. 1 and 2 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Cremation was private.

Anne Marie Carpenter

Anne Marie Carpenter of Founders Village in Southold died Aug. 16, 2013. She was 78 years old.

She was born June 13, 1935, in Cohoes, N.Y., to Armand and Anne (Bounne) Delisle.

Formerly of Centereach and Leisure Village in Ridge, she moved to Southold three years ago.

She will be long remembered for her volunteerism with the American Cancer Society, the Book Cottage in Southold and Meals on Wheels. She had also been a lector, Eucharistic minister and catechist at Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary R.C. Church in Centereach and, most recently, served as a lector at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold.

Playing bingo was a favorite pastime but her passion was spending time with her kids.

Surviving are her husband, Thomas W. Carpenter; five children, Kathleen Peckholdt of Hudson, Fla,, Jeannie Calderale of Peconic, Michelle Hart of Southold, Richard, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and David, of Chesapeake, Va.; her brothers Father Richard Delisle of Attleboro, Mass., and Father Thomas Delisle of Hopkinton, N.H.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Armand Delisle.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated Aug. 19 at St. Patrick R.C. Church by Frs. Peter Garry, Richard Delisle, Thomas Delisle and Donald Diederich. Interment will be at Calverton National Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Homes.

Elizabeth A. Terry

Elizabeth A. Terry died Aug. 19 at her home in Greenport. She was 85 years old.

Born in Calcutta, India, to British parents stationed there, she spent her early years growing up in a convent near the Nepalese border. In 1946, she sailed from Bombay to London, England, to live with her aunt and uncle during India’s civil unrest.

She quickly became a top model in England and, within a few years, starred alongside Dirk Bogarde in “For Better, For Worse,” a 1951 comedy. Despite being recognized as an up-and-coming movie star, she was a private person.

She moved to New York City in 1963 and worked at high-end fashion houses for several years, while raising her family. She then lived in Chicago for most of the 1970s before returning to New York, living in Bridgehampton and moving in 2010 to Peconic Landing in Greenport.

In the 1990s, she found she had an extraordinary talent for art, creating more than 50 drawings and paintings, many of which she sold at local art shows. She enjoyed painting landscapes that were inspired by her travels to more than 100 countries over the last 40 years with her husband.

Ms. Terry was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Peter, in 2012. She is survived by her sons, James, of New York City, and Stephen, of Northport; her sister, Cleone Browne, and brother, Peter Browne, both of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; and three grandchildren.

Arrangements were private and handled by Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport.

Robert Hogan

Robert “Bob” Hogan of East Marion and Wallingford, Pa., passed away July 24 at the age of 86.

He was born July 14, 1927, and grew up in Syracuse before joining the Coast Guard during World War II and later serving as an Army sergeant in Korea. He received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from Pratt Institute in New York, where he met Jean Olsson, who would become his wife of 57 years before passing away last June.

Bob was an architectural designer and talented artist whose acrylic and watercolor landscapes were displayed locally. His artistic talent and constant humor will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Hogan (Jim) Oetinger and Leelee (Richard Preis) Hogan; his son, Richard (Carron Sherry) Hogan; and granddaughters Claire and Julie Oetinger and Lily, Annika, Eloise and Violette Sherry Hogan.

Arrangements were handled by Cavanagh-Patterson Family Funeral Home in Media, Pa.

Madlyn Ann Pukies Ury of Cutchogue died peacefully Aug. 24, 2013, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, with her daughter by her side. Ms. Ury was 85 years old.

She was born Aug. 28, 1927, in Springfield Gardens, Queens, to Anna (Goebel) and Edwin Pukies. She met her future husband, Arthur, while working at Ridgewood Savings Bank. They married Nov. 20, 1955. She was a loving wife, devoted homemaker and beloved mother to her only child, Victoria.

Madlyn was predeceased by her husband in March 2011. In addition to her daughter, she is also survived by her sister, Marion Hamilton, and her children, Pam (Tim) and Todd (Mary); her sister-in-law, Carol Freda, and her children, Pamela (William), Andrew (Lisa) and Bradley; and cousins and several close friends.

Cremation was private. Arrangements were entrusted to Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

Catherine Theresa Kraw

Former Greenport resident Catherine Theresa Kraw of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died Aug. 2 at St. Lucie Medical Center. She was 85 years old.

Ms. Kraw was born March 18, 1928, in Greenport to Bridget (McVeigh) and Paul Cisterino and lived in the village until moving to Port St. Lucie in 2010. She worked as a telephone operator and was a member of St. Agnes R.C. Church in Greenport and Holy Family Catholic Church in Port St. Lucie.

Ms. Kraw was predeceased by her husband, William; her son Michael; her sister, Virginia Iacono; and her brothers, Buddy and Edward Cisterino. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Lisansky of Port St. Lucie; her son William of Greenport; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated in the near future at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Lifelong Greenport resident Lawrence “Larry” Francis Damiani died Aug. 24. He was 84 years old.

He was born Aug. 21, 1929, in Greenport to Peter and Rose Elvira (Dellanave) Damiani. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years as a submarine fireman and later worked for 36 years as a production manager for Grumman Aerospace in Calverton. He also served in the Greenport Fire Department’s Relief Hose company.

Mr. Damiani married Janice Klipp Oct. 21, 1951, in Greenport. Family members said he liked “tinkering mechanically,” gardening and entertaining on the patio.

Mr. Damiani is survived by his wife; his sons, Brad, of Westford, N.Y., Steven, of Bethpage, and Laine, of Clovis, Calif.; his daughter, Shari, of Hampstead, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers, Charles and Joseph.

The family will receive visitors Friday, Aug. 30, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport, where a funeral service will take place Saturday, Aug. 31, at 10 a.m., Father Tom Murray officiating. Interment will follow at St. Agnes Cemetery, also in Greenport.

George H. Kaytis

Lifelong Southold resident George H. Kaytis passed away peacefully Aug. 23, 2013. He was 86 years old.

He was born April 25, 1927, in South Jamesport to John and Anna Skinkaytis. He married Jane Neefus Oct. 3, 1954, in Francestown, N.H.

A successful businessman, he was president of See Neefus, Inc. in Riverhead for over 40 years. He belonged to North Fork Country Club, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his golf buddies and served on its board as house committee chairman. He was also an avid fisherman and gardener and enjoyed listening to music and strumming his guitar, to the delight of family and friends.

George was a devoted husband to his bride of nearly 59 years, Jane. He was a loving, gentle father to Sharon (Ralph) Condit, Jeffrey (Susan) and Lisa; grandfather to Clay, Samantha and Lindsey; and great-grandfather to Autumn. He was predeceased by his brother, John, and his sister, Aina. George’s kindness, moral character and sense of humor will be sorely missed by his loving family.

The family received visitors Aug. 25 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Beatrice Wasson Fechtig

Former longtime Laurel resident Beatrice Wasson Fechtig died Aug. 22 in Albuquerque, N.M. She was 96 years old.

She was born May 25, 1917, in Coudersport, Pa., to Herman D. and Henrietta Fleschutz and moved in 1938 to Southold, where she taught home economics at the high school. She recalled that during her first year of teaching, when the winds of the 1938 hurricane began, one of her students raised his hand and asked, “Miss Fleschutz, may I please be excused? Our family’s chicken coop just flew by the window!”

In 1940, she married John L. Wasson, D.D.S., who practiced dentistry at the Gildersleeve Octagon Building in Mattituck from 1935 until his death in 1954. As a widow, she managed the newly renovated cafeteria at Mattituck High School and went on to own and operate B. Wasson Realty in Riverhead. She then married Frederick Fechtig, M.D., who practiced family medicine on the North Fork. She was a long-standing member of Church of the Redeemer in Mattituck, North Fork Country Club and the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce.

Ms. Fechtig moved to Crantham, N.H., in 1984 to escape hurricanes and to Albuquerque in 1998 to escape New England winters and live with her daughter and son-in-law.

She is survived by her children, Joyce Wasson Hamil of Albuquerque, John Hastings Wasson of Lebanon, N.H., and Wendy Wasson of Chicago, Ill., and two grandchildren.

Cremation was private. A memorial service will take place at a later date.

Thomas J. Monahan

Thomas J. Monahan of Ridge died Aug. 22, 2013, at the age of 83. Formerly of Cutchogue, he had been proprietor of Top O’ The Mornin’ bed and breakfast there.

He was born in Mineola March 12, 1930, to Robert J. and Bridget (McCormack) Monahan. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and went on to a career in law enforcement.

Also formerly of Glen Cove, Tom served for 33 years with the Great Neck Estates Police Department, retiring as chief of the department.

He was a member of American Legion Post No. 803 in Southold and Island’s End Golf and Country Club in Greenport.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia (née McCabe), and his loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was the brother of Betty O’Donnell.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday, Aug. 27, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold. Interment with U.S. Army honors will follow at Calverton National Cemetery.

Stephen H. Simmons

Stephen H. Simmons of Southold died Aug. 25 at his home. He was 89 years old.

He was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Brooklyn to Stephen and Matilda Simmons. In his younger years, Mr. Simmons was in the Boy Scouts, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout and acting as assistant scoutmaster for three years in Floral Park, N.Y., when the community did not have a scoutmaster. He was also a camp counselor at Camp Wauwepex in Wading River and served as a lifeguard at the 4-H camp in Riverhead when it first opened. He attended St. John’s and Our Lady of Victory elementary schools and Sewanhaka High School, all in Floral Park.

Shortly after receiving his high school diploma, during World War II, Mr. Simmons enlisted in the United States Army, joining the Army Air Corps 409th Light Bomb Group. He served in the European theatre, seeing action in England, France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy and fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.

Upon returning from overseas, he began working as a repairman for New York Telephone, joining the Communication Workers of America and serving as a union steward. He retired after over 40 years of service with the phone company.

He married Violet in 1950, and the couple relocated to Southold 10 years later. In Southold, he was a volunteer firefighter with Packard Hose Company for over 40 years and belonged to American Legion Post 803.

Predeceased by his wife in 2002, Mr. Simmons is survived by his daughter, Lynda (Ray) Carpenter of Aquebogue and his son, Stephen (Lynn), of Colchester, Conn.; his grandchildren, Jennifer Michaelis of Aquebogue and Stephen and Edward of Colchester, Conn.; and his sister, Dorothy Simmons of Greenport.

The family received visitors Aug. 27 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue, where a funeral service took place Aug. 28. Interment with military honors followed at Calverton National Cemetery.

Thomas A. Feeley Jr. of Southold died Aug. 29. He was 87 years old.

Katharina G. Scheideler

Katharina G. Scheideler of Mattituck died at her home Aug. 29, 2013. She was 73 years old.

She was born Feb. 14, 1940, in Germany and came to the United States 25 years ago.

Formerly of Tenafly, N.J., she moved to the North Fork in 2005. Katharina, who spoke five languages, was a member of the North Fork Country Club and enjoyed golf, tennis, swimming and walks along Long Island Sound.

Predeceased by her husband, Hans Scheideler, she is survived by two daughters, Julia Dassel and Anna Wred, both of Germany; two grandchildren, Lotta and Nickulas; and her longtime friend and companion, Jim Brockbank of Mattituck.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted to DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. Cremation was held Aug. 31, 2013.

Muriel Kunz Schwindt

Muriel Kunz Schwindt of Southold died Aug. 28, 2013, at her home. She was 89 years old.

She was born Feb. 5, 1924, at home in Brooklyn to George and Maria (Kolb) Kunz and graduated from Jamaica High School.

On April 8, 1945, she married Edward Schwindt Jr. and moved to Seattle. They eventually moved back to Queens Village and later decided to move to the country, buying property in Albertson and having a house built. Muriel worked as a secretary to the Herricks School District superintendent.

The Schwindts would spend weekends with their friends in Southold for many years. They eventually purchased their own bungalow in Peconic and spent many summers on Long Island Sound. For the past 17 years, Muriel has lived in the Bayview section of Southold.

She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Greenport and the Isle-Enders.

Predeceased by her husband, Edward Schwindt Jr., in 2006, she leaves her daughters, Pamela Haldas (Robert) of Southold and Donna Roche (Thomas) of South Huntington; four grandchildren, Dr. Jason Haldas, Dawn Rohrs, Matthew Roche and Courtney Roche; and 10 great-grandchildren.

The family received friends Aug. 30 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 31 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Greenport, by the Rev. Garret M. Johnson. Interment took place at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Robert A. Potdevin

Robert A. (Bob) Potdevin died peacefully Aug. 11, 2013, at his home in Laurel. He was 86 years old.

Bob was the patriarch of the Potdevin family and preferred family gatherings on Great Peconic Bay over all else, especially if they included dogs and boats. He was happiest with a view of the bay, and it was particularly beautiful the day he died.

Bob was born Feb. 16, 1927, in Brooklyn to Mathilda Fetzer and Adolph Potdevin. He grew up in Garden City and excelled in track and soccer in high school. Bob enlisted in the Army Air Corps and participated in the Berlin Airlift after World War II, based in Oberpfaffenhofen. He later attended Hofstra University.

Bob married his high school sweetheart, Ruth Hauser, on April 28, 1951. The couple moved to Ridgewood, N.J., where they raised four children, Robert Scott, James Todd, Jan Carol and Roger Dodge Potdevin.

The Potdevins were avid tennis players and belonged to Upper Ridgewood Tennis Club and the North Fork Country Club in Cutchogue. The family enjoyed boating and took many extended trips on their boats, the Weather Lee II, III and IV, from Montreal to the coast of Maine to Florida and the Bahamas. The family traveled extensively, frequently combining Bob’s business with pleasure to far-flung destinations.

Ruth Potdevin died tragically May 30, 1985, and the couple’s son Roger died April 11, 2005, after a brief illness.

Bob was president and CEO of the Potdevin Machine Company, based in Teterboro and West Caldwell, N.J., a manufacturer of packaging machinery sold both nationally and internationally. He was a packaging industry leader and served a term as president of the Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Institute. Bob was also active in Rotary International and served on the board of directors of the Hackensack, N.J., YMCA.

Bob married Martha Covington (née Fogg), Dec. 7, 1989. Bob and Martha split their time between Ridgewood and Laurel, later spending more and more time at their Great Peconic Bay home, which they loved.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Martha. He also leaves behind his sons Robert, of Basking Ridge, N.J., and James, of Juneau, Alaska, and daughter, Jan Munier of Falmouth, Mass.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial gathering will be held Sept. 12 at VanderPlaat Funeral Home in Wyckoff, N.J., between 2 and 4 p.m.

Thomas A. Feeley Jr.

Thomas A. Feeley Jr., 87, of Southold, passed away at Stony Brook University Hospital Aug. 29 after suffering complications from babesiosis, a tick-borne disease.

He was born Nov. 28, 1925, in Brooklyn to Maurice and Ellen Feeley and raised in Mineola, graduating from Mineola High School. He was married to Marilyn (née Menkes) for over 54 years until her passing in 2008. He leaves behind his faithful canine companion Tobey. Surviving children include Ellen Smith-Perez (Alphonso) of Florida, Thomas M. (Linda) of Bohemia, Denise Feeley-Manarel (Ross) of Riverhead, Arleen Skwara (Tony) of Texas, and Richard (Michelle) of Southold. He was the adored grandfather of Thomas, Jennifer, Christine (Greg), Richard, Sarah, Jordan Ross, Andrew, Renee, Kendra, Michael, Mackenzie and Patrick; and great-grandfather of Kaitlyn, Jaidyn, Fiona, and John Thomas. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Feeley worked for New York Telephone Company until his retirement in 1984. He was a proud World War II U.S. Navy Veteran and member of Southold American Legion Post 803. He enjoyed yard work and gardening.

Visitation was Sept. 2 at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 3 at St. Patrick R.C. Church in Southold, followed by burial with military honors at Calverton National Cemetery.

Contributions in Mr. Feeley’s memory may be made to Southold American Legion Post 803 or Southold Fire Department.
