Lela Ottley Leslie

Lela Ottley Leslie passed away at her home in Greenport on June 20, 2024, after a long illness. She was 88 years old.

Lela was born Sept. 29, 1935, in New York City to Gilbert Ottley and Gladys Graham Ottley Magnuson, of Locust Valley, N.Y. Lela graduated from Green Vale School, Miss Porter’s School (where she was delighted to have two granddaughters follow in her footsteps) and Vassar College.

Lela’s proudest accomplishment was her nearly sixty years of sobriety in Alcoholics Anonymous. She was an inspirational and life-changing sponsor to scores of recovering alcoholics, many of whom became lifelong friends. Lela served on the boards of the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and the Hanley Foundation, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center, in Palm Beach, Fla. She was an early adopter of the use of family interventions for treating substance abuse.

Lela’s greatest joy was in the deep and meaningful relationships forged through her work and family. She was beloved for her irreverent sense of humor, sparkling personality, and warm, inclusive compassion. She practiced yoga many decades before it was cool, sunbathed with abandon before it was forbidden, and tap-danced joyfully along to the Muzak in supermarkets and movie theaters. She was a talented watercolorist, a cheerfully lead-footed driver, and a treasured mother, sister, grandmother and friend.

In midlife, Lela split her time between her homes in Locust Valley and Vero Beach, Fla., where her persona as “Grammy” was on full display, reading stories, playing pool games, dispensing matrilineal wisdom (and beauty tips), and buying ice cream for her legion of beloved grandchildren.

Lela is survived by her brother and sister-in-law Philip and Glenna Ottley of Ketchum, Idaho; her daughter Holly Hackett Kania of Arlington, Mass. and son Welles Hackett of Los Angeles, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Her cherished eldest son, Randall Hackett Jr., died in 2019.

A Celebration of Life service will take place Saturday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s of Lattingtown Church in Locust Valley, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Lela’s memory to the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (Westbury, N.Y.) or the Patricia H. Ladew Foundation (a shelter for re-homing cats) in Oyster Bay, N.Y.

Richard B. Arnold

On Oct. 18, 2024 Richard B. Arnold, a loving husband, father/father-in-law, grandfather, brother/brother-in-law, cousin and uncle, died a valiant warrior after a 12-year battle with cancer. Above all else, Rick loved his family and was truly one of a kind.

In addition to being a warrior in his battle with cancer, Rick also survived a major plane crash in 1970 described in a book entitled “35 Miles from Shore: The Ditching and Rescue of ALM Flight 980.” He was one of the last three people to be rescued from the ocean because he was helping others to survive; a testament to who Rick was, always thinking of others and doing right by them, and having a passion for life.

Rick attended North Shore High School, where he met his beautiful wife Joan Hagan, and went on to live a fairytale come true love story. Anyone who knew them as a couple knew that theirs was a forever love, shaped by their common dedication to family and friends. Whether it be a walk on the beach or hosting celebratory Arnold feasts, Rick was passionate about seizing the opportunity to enjoy life’s pleasures and always wanted to share them with those he loved.

Rick loved to be on the water, where he could be found fishing and boating on the Peconic, enjoying the mesmerizing waters and breathtaking views of Greenport, where his heart lived and where he found the most joy. There would always be great conversation and laughter, wine from local North Fork vineyards, key lime pie, and sounds of Willie Nelson filling the air. These indelible memories along with Rick’s kind smile and sparkling blue eyes are forever cherished.

Rick was a dedicated broker/owner of Richard B. Arnold Real Estate for over 50 years and was guided by his personal ethic, which put trust and integrity above all to assist the North Shore community with their real estate needs. Rick loved people and remembered the details of their lives, and always offered wise counsel.

Rick’s caring approach in his business was also known through his community involvement over his lifetime. Rick served on the board of the North Shore Youth Council, Glen Head/Glenwood Business Association, and was an active parent in the local Scouting Troop 195, having raised two remarkable boys, Michael and Matthew, who both became Eagle Scouts, and attended North Shore schools. His granddaughter, Abigail, attends North Shore Middle School, as will her sister, Zoey, soon enough.

A celebration of life will take place in spring of 2025. Details will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations for cancer research may be made in memory of Richard Arnold at www.engage.weill.cornell.edu/give. Select “Other Fund” and enter “Dr. David Nanus GU Research” as the fund name. Under Gift Option, you can make your donation in memory of Richard Arnold.

Jean LePré

Dec. 10, 1942 – Oct. 18, 2024

Jean LePré, born Jean Campbell on Long Island, was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and foster mom.

She married her husband Frank LePré in 1968, whom she fell in love with on a spontaneous blind date. The two decided to start a family but were challenged with Jean’s bout with uterine cancer early on. Not being able to have children of her own, Jean went on to adopt 12 children with her husband Frank. They also fostered dozens more children over the years.

The LePré family became a force to be reckoned with — an inspiring demonstration of the power of love, commitment and loyalty.

Jean LePré worked hard to make significant improvements to Long Island’s department of special education programs. She was also a dedicated member of her church, teaching Bible study regularly.

After losing her husband in the early 2000s, and her son Patrick a few years later, Jean continued to serve as a pillar of strength — opening up her heart and home to whomever needed a helping hand. She successfully battled breast cancer twice in her lifetime while never giving up her faith.

Jean passed away Oct. 18, 2024 at the age of 81. She is survived by her children: James, Brian, Patrick, George, Katie, Karen, Andrew, Michael, Steven, Gerard, Matthew, Dade and Luis. She has 12 grandchildren: Samantha, Jordanne, Kit, Jacklyn, Maria, Alison, David, Kyle, Brody, Gerard Jr., Gianna, and Lily Jean. She also leaves behind nine great-grandchildren: William, Aiden, Aurelio, Lydia, Damien, Audrey, Kameron, Hope, and Brendan.

She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.

A wake service for Jean will be held on Nov. 2, 2024 at the DeFriest-Grattan funeral home of Mattituck, from 2 to 4 p.m. and again at 7 to 9 p.m. The following day, Nov. 3, there will be a burial ceremony at Blue Point Cemetery at approximately 10 a.m.

Adrian Bertrand Cockerill Jr.

Adrian Bertrand Cockerill Jr., (known lovingly by family as ‘Junior’) aged 93, passed away on Oct. 25, 2024, at Springvale Nursing and Rehabilitation in Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. Born on July 1, 1931, Junior was known for his devilishly charming personality, whip-smart intellect and recalcitrant spirit.

Junior graduated from Xavier High School and furthered his education at Fordham University, earning a Bachelor of Arts, followed by an MBA from New York University. His academic prowess led him to a successful career in financial planning in Manhattan, where he was respected for his sharp insight and strategic thinking. He served honorably for three years in military associations, where he was known for his robust leadership and dedication.

A man of many interests, Junior was an avid fisherman, a voracious reader, and was famous for having strong opinions and humorously stealing jokes at gatherings. He was a spiritual person who worshipped everywhere, finding solace and peace in many places of faith throughout his life, and, notably, he always had room for dessert. He most enjoyed his time in Orient, having spent summers, holidays and as much time as he could at White Shingles, as a boy and then as a father.

ABC Junior is survived by his beloved wife, Joyce (Raasch) Cockerill; his three children, Christine Cockerill (and her son Colin), Carole Cockerill, and Adrian B. Cockerill III (daughter-in-law and favorite person, Margaret J. Hoag). He also leaves behind his brother, John Cockerill; his sister, Rosemary Cockerill; and niece and nephews, Debbie, Bobby, Tommy, John, Paul and their families. Adrian was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian B. and Edith (Blanc) Cockerill, and his brother, Robert Cockerill.

A memorial service will be held in the future, with details to be determined, where family and friends can gather to honor Adrian’s remarkable life, hopefully at one of his old fishing spots. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Adrian’s memory are encouraged to engage in acts of kindness or contribute to a cause meaningful to them, in reflection of Adrian’s generous spirit.

Monica Mary Nolan

Monica Mary Nolan (née Horan) passed away on Oct. 26, 2024. Her 89 years were filled with faith, family and love.

Mona, as she was always known, was born on May 13, 1935 in Kilnaleck, County Cavan, Ireland to Patrick and Mary Anne Horan. The family settled in Old Castle, County Meath, where Mona and her dear brother, Michael, grew up thick as thieves. Mona was an excellent student and, even as a child, displayed many of the talents and gifts that made her the Renaissance woman she became. As a teenager, she was a tennis champion and accomplished pianist. She moved to Dublin to work at the world-renowned Gresham Hotel, a decision that completely changed the course of her life.

There, she befriended Claire Nolan, who invited her to Donegal to meet two of her brothers who were home visiting from New York. When Mona met Claire’s brother, Paddy, it was love at first sight. After six months of letter writing, the two were engaged and Mona flew to New York to wed the love of her life. They were married on April 30, 1966 at St. Bartholomew Church in Elmhurst, N.Y. Their marriage was a true partnership, friendship, and love affair.

Mona and Paddy began their life together in Woodside, Queens but moved to Southold in 1976 to give their three children a more rural and carefree life. Mona was fully engaged in the life of her children and in the civic life of the North Fork. She was a class mother at Sacred Heart School every year, rotating through her three children. She volunteered at Sacred Heart’s auctions and fundraisers; performed in plays and talent shows; and was a long-serving member and past president of the Rosary Altar Society. As a Rosarian, she served as a caring volunteer for the Consolation Ministry of St. Patrick’s Church. In addition, she was an active member of the Southold Yacht Club and a dedicated and caring volunteer at Birthright.

Mona was an accomplished administrative assistant, respected and adored by her colleagues, but it was her family and friends who flourished from her undivided focus and attention. She loved to chat while peeling apples with her sister-in-law, Anne. If the two lifelong friends weren’t busy with Anne’s pie business, they could be found gleefully trekking to the Smith Haven Mall, children in tow. She enjoyed luncheons and dinners with dear friends. She loved finding treasures at yard sales and rooted for her Mets and Jets alongside her Paddy. She finished a bathroom and bedroom in her home, learning plumbing and carpentry, in order to give her girls more space. Much of this was done after a long day of work, just one of many examples of her sacrificial love.

Celebrating the graduations, weddings, and ordination of her cherished nieces and nephews brought her great happiness. Her love flowed to the children of her nieces and nephews and she never missed an opportunity to participate and celebrate in their lives.

Mona loved to travel with her husband, Paddy, and enjoyed exploring Italy, Germany, Canada and Holland, bringing home small tokens to her children because they were always on her mind. She especially loved visiting Ireland with her daughter, Catherine and her family, and escaping the cold gray winters to enjoy the company of her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe and Anne, in Puerto Rico.

Becoming a grandmother to her 10 beloved grandchildren was one of Mona’s greatest joys. She participated in every event she could — graduations, Halloween hayrides, birthday parties, and first communions. No event was too small. Even when travel became difficult, she would still journey to Wyoming or Massachusetts to be part of the lives of those she loved. When she couldn’t be there physically, she would send cards and small presents such as a hair bow for the first day of kindergarten or Easter chocolates, just to let that child know how cherished she or he was.

Mona never sought the spotlight and will be remembered for her loving and gentle way. She had a keen wit and sense of humor, however, and always offered easy conversation and a kind willingness to listen, as well as laugh.

Not without her share of health challenges, Mona never complained but faced them head-on with incredible strength, grace, and dignity. She shone her bright and beautiful light on those she met in passing and on those she loved and cherished, and our lives will forever be richer for the gift of her love and life.

Mona is survived by her husband, Patrick and her three children, Mairead Nolan (Victor Noel), Catherine (Robert) Holdman and Ciara (John) Knepper and her grandchildren: Maeve, Sinead, John, Finian, Nolan and Monica Knepper; Patrick, Lucia and Timothy Holdman; and Arianna Noel. She also leaves cherished nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Michael Horan, and her parents.

The family will receive friends on Monday, Nov. 4 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Church in Southold. Interment will follow at Saint Patrick’s R.C. Cemetery in Southold.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center.
