Peter Filmanski

Former Wading River resident Peter Filmanski died July 8 in Glen Allen, Va. He was 71 years old.

He was born and raised in Wading River and graduated from Riverhead High School in 1959. He was a lifelong banker, starting at Franklin National Bank in Riverhead, and lived in New York and Florida before retiring to Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his son, Tyson, and daughter-in-law, Beth; and two grandchildren, Q & A.

A graveside service will take place Wednesday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m. at Wading River Cemetery.


Wells memorial set

Graveside services for Rodney Kenneth Wells of Greenport will be held Saturday, July 27, at 1 p.m. at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Mr. Wells died May 7, 2013, at his home in Greenport Village. He was 104. A complete obituary was published in a previous edition of The Suffolk Times.

Memorial donations may be made to Greenport Fire Department Rescue Squad, East End Hospice or Southold United Methodist Church.

James J. Byrnes

Former East Northport resident James J. Byrnes, M.D., of Boca Raton, Fla., died Sunday, July 21, 2013, in Delray Beach, Fla., at the age of 61.

The son of Virginia and Edward Byrnes of Laurel, Dr. Byrnes grew up in East Northport and graduated from Holy Family High School in South Huntington and Villanova (Pa.) University. He received his medical degree from the University of Italy in Modena.

He was chief of staff at Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach, Fla., chairman of the Bethesda Hospital Foundation and the Palm Beach Medical Society and president of the Bethesda Hospital staff. He was well known in the South Florida community for his work with medical students at the University of Miami and received many awards for his contributions to the community. He was also a former member of the Commack Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Dr. Byrnes is survived by his mother, of Laurel, and brothers, Jack (Laurie), of East Northport, Richard, of Brightwaters and Tom (Karen), of Fort Worth, Texas. He was adored by his nieces and nephews, Megan, Timothy, Brian, Lauren and Emilee. He was predeceased by his father.

The family will receive visitors at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue Saturday, July 27, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, July 25, in Boynton Beach.

Margaret Croasdale

Margaret “Peggy” Croasdale of Southold died peacefully July 20, 2013, at the age of 84.

She was born Sept. 19, 1928, to Christina (Goebel) and Thomas Hickey of Malverne, N.Y. She was a graduate of Marianapolis College in Montreal, Canada, and received a master’s degree in education from Hofstra University. While at college, Peggy spent her summers as a waitress at the famed Hotel Tadoussac along the St. Lawrence and Saguenay rivers in Quebec.

Peggy was a beloved kindergarten teacher in Syosset and in 1958 married Dan Croasdale, the love of her life. Together Dan and Peg spent 51 wonderful years together, raising four children in Malverne, and shared many a good time with friends and family in Southold and Windham, N.Y.

Peggy was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Rosary Altar Society and volunteered for the American Cancer Society, the Holly A. Patterson Nursing Home and the Cub Scouts. She spent many summers volunteering at the Southold Yacht Club, serving on the entertainment committee and as rear commodore.

In 1990, Peggy and Dan retired to Southold, where they had summered since 1968. Peggy was an active member of the St. Patrick Rosary Altar Society and a volunteer at Mercy High School and the Southold Historical Society, where she enjoyed giving tours. She will be so lovingly remembered for her love and devotion to her husband, her family and her faith.

Peggy was predeceased by her beloved Danny in November 2009. She is survived by her children, Mary and Michael Mellor of Wrentham, Mass., Joseph and Sherri Croasdale of Cold Spring Harbor, Maggie and JC Merrill of Southold and Chrissy and Walter Berry of Southold; her grandchildren, Liam and Grace Mellor, Brendan and Alison Croasdale, Siobhan and Fiona Merrill and Noah, Samantha and Brittney Berry; and her great-grandson, Bennett Detrick. She was loved and will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and all those who benefited from Peggy’s open door and generosity.

The family will receive friends at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue on Tuesday, July 23, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, July 24, at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church, Southold, with interment at St. Patrick Cemetery.

Beatrice E. Psaki MacDonald

Former Southold resident Beatrice E. Psaki MacDonald of New Bern, N.C., died peacefully at home July 9, 2013, with her daughter, Maureen, by her side. She was 90.

Mrs. MacDonald grew up in Forest Hills, one of six children. Her father was an M.D. and her mother an R.N. She attended Misericordia Nursing School in the Bronx, N.Y., and became a registered nurse. After she married and her children were older, she worked at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Centre and retired from the A. Holly Patterson Home in Uniondale. She also resided in North Merrick and Southold before retiring to New Bern in 1989.

She loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren, and made sure she always had a crib set up for the babies to spend the night. She loved the water and the beautiful beaches of her beloved North Fork and was a Red Cross-certified swimmer.

She cherished her ’40s era music and memories of that time and always loved to dance. She was a Cub Scout den mother when her boys were small, an avid bowler, made awesome Halloween costumes and birthday party centerpieces and gave the best nursing care when her family was sick. Animals were always a part of her life, cats and dogs.

When she moved to New Bern, she was involved in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension and volunteered at Craven Regional Medical Center. A member of St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, she was a rosary maker and helped with the church bulletins. She’ll be missed more than she could ever realize and loved even more.

Mrs. MacDonald was predeceased by her spouse of 55 years, Thomas N. MacDonald, and her son, Thomas F. MacDonald. She was the loving and devoted mother of Kevin M. MacDonald and his wife, Corrine, of Cutchogue, and beloved daughter, Maureen T. MacDonald of New Bern; adoring grandmother of Jason Z. MacDonald, Ethan T. MacDonald, Timothy P. MacDonald, Jennifer C. MacDonald Boese, Kelly J. MacDonald, Kathleen M. MacDonald, Jaimie L. MacDonald, Thomas J. MacDonald and Morgan E. Quirk; and great-grandmother of Isabella A. MacDonald, Adelaide G. Boese and Frederick H. Boese.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern. A funeral mass will be held Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at St. Paul’s Roman Catholic Church in New Bern. A memorial reception will follow for friends. A service will be held on the North Fork in fall of 2013.

Chester B. Misloski

Chester B. Misloski of Peconic died July 20 at the age of 89.

He was born in Peconic on Jan. 19, 1924, to Bruno and Anna (Hawrylyk) Misloski and attended local schools. A farmer with Case Farms for many years, he enjoyed gardening and tending to flowers.

He is survived by his sisters, Rose VanDuzer of Southold and Sophie Holland of Delaware, and nieces and nephews.

Mr. Misloski was buried earlier this week in the family plot at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue. Father Stan Wadowski officiated.

John F. Kosloski

John F. Kosloski of Mattituck died at his home on July 18, 2013. He was 98 years old.

He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., May 14, 1915, to Anthony and Stanislava (Boruszewicz) Kozlowski.

He married Stella Orlowski in Cutchogue in 1938.

Predeceased by his wife in 1983, he is survived by his children, Joan Olmsted of Mattituck and James Kosloski of Huntington; a brother, Joey Kozlowski of Center Moriches; a sister, Victoria Mulchay of Delaware; five grandchildren: James John Kosloski, Sheri Marie Cambareri, Steven Olmsted, Jill Marie Lettieri and Eric Olmsted; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family received friends July 21 at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Mattituck. The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated July 22 at Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church in Mattituck, Father Stan Wadowski officiating. Interment was at Sacred Heart R.C. Cemetery in Cutchogue.

Marilyn Lois Grumet

Marilyn Lois Grumet of Cutchogue and Manhattan died July 12. She was 72 years old.

Born April 3, 1941, Marilyn grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa., before moving to Weirton, W. Va. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia University with a major in English, then taught English in Columbus, Ohio, and received a Master of Arts degree from Ohio State.

Marilyn moved to Manhattan in 1967 to teach English at Rye (N.Y.) High School. Over 32 years, she gave hundreds of students a deep love of reading. Many have said that they will be rereading some of the books from her classes in her memory.

Upon retiring in 1999, Marilyn divided her time between Manhattan and Cutchogue, where she loved her water view, kayaking in the creeks and making new friends. She enjoyed knitting, reviewing new books for Bookspan and, most of all, winning ribbons with her bearded collie, Margo, at agility competitions.

Marilyn is survived by her brother, Louis R. (Barbara) Grumet of Manhattan; their daughters, Lisa Grumet (Mark Daly) and Debbie Grumet (Bob Groppe); nieces Megan, Devon and Gwen; and her many friends in Manhattan, Rye and Cutchogue, who miss her sense of humor, generosity, sharp wit and knowledge of literature.

Kimberly Schuhmann

Kimberly Schuhmann of Jamesport died July 16 at the age of 45.

She was born May 10, 1968, at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, to Kenneth and Margaret (Bliss) Schuhmann.

A graduate of Dunellen (N.J.) High School, she was a chef at Jamesport Country Kitchen. Family members said she loved helping people and spending time with family and friends.

Predeceased by her mother, Ms. Schuhmann is survived by her father, her stepmother, Cheryl, and her brothers, Kenneth Jr. and Kevin, all of Riverhead.

The family received visitors July 18 at McLaughlin Heppner Funeral Home in Riverhead. Cremation was private.

William Stanley Spellman Sr.

William “Bill” Stanley Spellman Sr. of Riverhead died July 15. He was 81 years old.

He was born July 25, 1931, to Joseph and Hattie (Poole) Spellman in Weeksville, N.C. He worked on farms and in factories in North Carolina and Virginia before moving to the New York City area, where he worked for the Gun Hill Fence Company and at The Bronx Terminal Market. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a decorated wounded veteran, based on injuries he sustained.

He and his wife, Etta Margaret, were married Sept. 2, 1945, in the Bronx. They relocated to eastern Long Island, residing in Sag Harbor, Greenport, Bridgehampton and Riverhead. He worked as a supervising foreman at Riverhead Cement Block and ran his own landscaping business with his brother Erlie Briggs. Most recently he worked at Peconic Bay Medical Center as the supervising maintenance and custodial employee, retiring after 28 years.

Family members said faith was very important to Mr. Spellman. He was a member of Riverhead Church of Christ, where he served as chair of the transportation committee, helping members get to the church, and as educational department chair, mentoring children and developing Bible lessons for the entire congregation. His devotion and ambition led to him to begin a new church and, with the assistance of his brother Erlie, he founded Southampton Church of Christ. He later returned to the Riverhead Church of Christ to serve the community.

Mr. Spellman is survived by his wife of 59 years; eight children: William Jr., Joseph, Valerie, Brandon, Veleda, Vedette, Kevin Johnson and Elisa; three brothers, Aaron Hank Brown, Sonny Poole and Mr. Briggs; two sisters, Doretha Brown and Classie Kelly; 22 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives, friends and neighbors. He was predeceased by a daughter, Veronica; two sons, John and Ernest; a brother, Kurt; and four sisters, Mary, Delois, Fannie and Doris.

The family received visitors July 19 at Riverhead Church of Christ. Interment followed at Calverton National Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by Seay Memorial Chapel in Riverhead.

Gladys V. Taggart

Gladys V. Taggart of Southold died July 19, 2013, at the age of 95.

She was born Dec.14, 1917, in Indiana to Horace and Edna (Hubbard) Ratcliff. She married Vandivere M. Taggart in New York City in 1938. He predeceased her on Oct. 13, 1992.

Formerly of Florida and New Jersey, Ms. Taggart had lived on the North Fork for 81 years and will be remembered as a devoted housewife.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son Van and two brothers, Melvin and James Ratcliff. She is survived by her children Thomas and Joyce, of Florida, and Steven, of Michigan; and 10 grandchildren: Vicky, Finessa, Graham, Dana, Jason, Joey, Lisa, Van, Ethan and Heather.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold, where services will be conducted Wednesday, July 24, at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Dr. Peter J. Kelley. Interment will follow at Cutchogue Cemetery.

Thomas A. Cervelli of Southold died suddenly July 24, 2013. He was 70 years old.

He was born in Rockville Centre February 2, 1943, to Michael and Louise Cervelli, and grew up in Farmingdale, graduating from Farmingdale High School in 1961. He married the former Nancy O’Day on October 14, 1978 in Hicksville.

Tom worked as a computer programmer before moving with his wife Nancy in 1990 to Bar Harbor, Maine where he owned and operated The Inn at Canoe Point for eleven years. As an innkeeper Tom made sure his guests had an unforgettable vacation and would return year after year.

In 2001, he relocated to the North Fork and loved his time playing golf and working part time at Islands End Golf Course.  He was also a volunteer at Eastern Long Island Hospital and East End Hospice.

Tom is survived by his wife, Nancy; daughter, Sandra Tupper, of New Jersey; brother, Michael Cervelli, of Pennsylvania; sister, Patricia Fischer, of Texas and grandsons, James and Brian Tupper of New Jersey.

He was also the cherished brother-in-law of Maureen and Eric Godin, Debbie Holbrook and Jay Greaney, Don and Toni O’Day, Trish and Fred Reimer and Dave and Patty O’Day; cherished son-in-law of Joan and Donald O’Day and the adored uncle of 18 nieces and nephews and 15 great-niece and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 28 from 3 to 7 p.m. at DeFriest-Grattan Funeral Home in Southold.  The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, July 29 at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick R.C. Church, officiated by Father Peter Garry.

Thomas A. Cervelli of Southold died suddenly July 24, 2013. He was 70 years old.

He was born Feb. 2, 1943, in Rockville Centre to Michael and Louise Cervelli and grew up in Farmingdale, graduating from Farmingdale High School in 1961. He married Nancy O’Day on Oct. 14, 1978, in Hicksville.

Mazie Gilbert Lindsey

Former Orient resident Mazie Gilbert Lindsey died July 4 at her home in Rahway, N.J. She was 82.

She was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Chattanooga, Tenn., to Annie and King Gilbert. Ms. Lindsey moved to Orient in 1943 and graduated from Orient Grammar School in 1945, continuing on to Greenport High School, from which she graduated in 1949. In 1951 Mazie married Levi Paul Lindsey Sr. and gave birth to her only child, Levi Paul “Peter” Lindsey Jr.

As a teen Ms. Lindsey babysat for several families in Orient, including the Lathams, the Edwards and the Terrys. She remained close with the Terry family throughout her life.

She loved worshipping the Lord, family members said, as well as cooking, arts and crafts, music (especially classical) and children. And they also said she enjoyed a good couple of glasses of wine.

Ms. Lindsey was predeceased by her husband; her son; her brothers, Eddie and King Gilbert Jr.; and her sister Lillie Mae Green. She is survived by her sister Annie Louise Engleton and many nieces and nephews.

A service will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, at 10 a.m. at Orient Congregational Church, the Rev. Ann Van Cleef officiating. Cremation was private.

Joan A. Sypher

Former Mattituck resident Joan A. Sypher died of cancer June 24, 2013, at her home in New Milford, Conn. She was 76.

Born Dec. 1, 1936, at Eastern Long Hospital in Greenport to George Arthur and Marian (Herman) Bergen, she grew up in Mattituck, Aquebogue and Riverhead. After graduating from Riverhead High School in 1954, she worked for New York Telephone Company.

On Oct. 7, 1956, Joan married her high school sweetheart, Ronald Sypher, in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Doris and Ronald’s brother, William.

Joan and Ronald lived in Riverhead, Aquebogue and Wading River before moving to South Salem, N.Y. Joan continued to work for New York Telephone Company until 1993, when she retired and they moved to New Milford.

Joan loved spending time with family, camping at Cedar Point Park and in New Hampshire, relaxing on the beaches of Cape Cod, Maine and Nova Scotia or entertaining at her home for the holidays, family members said. After retirement, she and Ronald enjoyed wintering in St. Augustine, Fla.

Her family also said attention to detail was a hallmark of Joan’s, demonstrated in her painting, record-keeping, organizing family trips and even her selection of birthday-present wrapping. She also loved listening to saxophone music, particularly that of Kenny G., as well as baking, cooking, gardening, golfing and caring for animals, they said.

Joan is survived by her husband of 57 years; two sons, Bruce (Rita) of Danbury, Conn., and Michael (Beth) of Holmes, N.Y.; two daughters, Kathleen (Tom) Castegnetta of New Milford and Nancy (Ed) Walsh, of Sherman, Conn.; two sisters, Doris Sypher of East Quogue and Connie Kwasnieski Wilds of Maryland; her brother Ronnie Kwasnieski of Maryland; and seven grandchildren: Nicholas, Courtney and Stephanie Sypher; Sam and Dan Castegnetta; and Erin and Dylan Walsh. She is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother James Kwasnieski.

A funeral Mass was held June 27 at Our Lady of the Lakes R.C. Church followed by interment at St. Francis Cemetery, both in New Milford.

Arrangements were handled by Lillis Funeral Home, also in New Milford.

Robert Green Gildersleeve

Robert Green Gildersleeve died July 20, 2013, in Arlington, Va., after a brief illness. He was 90 years old.

Bob was born in Mattituck July 12, 1923, in a house that still stands on Pike Street. He was the second son and sixth child of Ethel May (Green) and James Andrew Gildersleeve Jr. He lived for over 50 years in Northport, with his wife, Julia (née Freeborn), who predeceased him in 1996.

Bob spent many hours tracing the Gildersleeve family lineage back to its beginnings in England in 1273. He was an 11th-generation member of the Gildersleeve family (counting back to Richard the Third), who first came to Southold Township in 1635. Through his maternal great-grandmother, Anna Wickham (Reeve) Gildersleeve, he traced his lineage back to one of Mattituck’s first Puritan settlers, William Furrier. Likewise, through his mother’s Corwin/Green line, he also traced the history back to one of the original settlers of the area, Matthias Corwin. Early family members were staunch patriots and many of them served as officers in the Revolutionary War.

Bob graduated from Syracuse University and worked for many years as a public librarian on Long Island. He was an avid antique collector, enjoyed reading about Queen Elizabeth and other members of the British royal family and doing crafts of all kinds.

Bob is survived by his daughter, Sara Gildersleeve Eakes of Arlington; her husband, Garey; and granddaughter Samantha. He is also survived by other members of the extended Gildersleeve family in the area, including his sister-in-law, Pauline Gildersleeve of Mattituck.

Services will be held in Mattituck at a later date, followed by burial at Old Bethany Cemetery.

The Rev. Edward J. Hansen Jr. died July 7, 2013, in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He was 61 years old.

Edward was born Oct. 22, 1951, in Brooklyn and was a longtime resident of Cutchogue.

He is survived by his wife, Julia A. Bergonzi; his mother, Elaine Emily Hansen; his daughters, Abigail Hansen Corrigan and Amanda Hendricks; his granddaughters, Riley Skye Corrigan and Sadie Rae Corrigan; his grandson, Wyatt Hendricks; his sisters, Elaine Radin Hansen and Joan VanFleet; and a brother, John Hansen.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. at First Congregational Church in Riverhead.

Phyllis Diane Atkins

Phyllis Diane Atkins of Greenport died suddenly July 24 at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. She was 48 years old.

She was born Aug. 25, 1964, to Delaware and Laura Atkins of Greenport. Growing up, she enjoyed sports such as gymnastics, volleyball and cheerleading. Family members said bingo was her favorite pastime and that she enjoyed “Driving Miss Daisy” even when she said she didn’t.

Ms. Atkins worked for Community Action Southold Town for many years and family members said she was always eager to give back and help those in need. She loved spending time with her children and taking her granddaughter to the park.

She is survived by her daughters, Angela Reyes-Colon and Tara Stilley, both of Greenport; her parents, also of Greenport; sisters, Della Ross of Riverhead and Regina Rodriguez of Richmond, Va.; brothers, Delaware Atkins III of Evansville, Ind., and Paul Parks of Greenport; one granddaughter; and her significant other, Danny Alaia.

The family received visitors Monday, July 29, at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. Private cremation followed.

John F. Irving of Nassau Point, Cutchogue, died July 30 at his home. He was 71 years old.

The family will receive visitors Thursday, Aug. 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. and Friday, Aug 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Coster-Heppner Funeral Home in Cutchogue. Cremation will be private.
