Carolee “Deets” Doucett passed away on Nov. 18, 2022, after a difficult 10-month battle with cancer. She was 61 years young.

Deets lived life to the fullest and was so proud of her devoted husband, Tiger, and her son, Bill, who was her world. Deets was a caring, generous, loving person with a great sense of humor. She touched many people beyond her family. She worked for 25 years at Creations by Lisa, where she greeted everyone with her contagious smile. Deets was always gifting people her delicious baked goods, from her annual Christmas cookies to the treats sent to Plum Island for Tiger’s coworkers. Her love was giving gifts — and she was so thoughtful with her choices.

Halloween, her favorite holiday, was filled with over-the-top parties for Bill and his friends in their younger days. Deets considered herself a “bonus mom” to all Bill’s friends. Their house filled with kids made her happy.

Deets documented all events with pictures. She was responsible for gathering the family for every group photo, lining up the siblings from youngest to oldest, and sending out prints. When people groaned, she said, “You’ll thank me for this later.” (And you were right, Deets. Thank you!)

She loved family island vacations, especially Barbados. Deets was passionate about animals and often brought food and blankets to the animal shelter. Not too long ago, she found an injured seagull and brought it to the vet. (Who does that?!)

Sadly, she leaves behind her husband, Tiger; son, Bill; her sheltie, Rico; sisters Sandee Tompkins (Rich) and Darline “Mope” McGinness (Rob); and brothers Bob Brush (Hope) and John Brush (Darlene). She also leaves behind “Nanny” Doucett and nieces and nephews, including her niece Lisa Brush D’Orio (Joe), who she just adored and who held a special place in her life. Deets also leaves behind many deeply loved friends (you know who you are).

We would like to thank East End Hospice, especially Deets’s nurse Melanie, for all the kindness and care they gave during this time.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or North Fork Animal Welfare League.

Per Deets’s wishes there will be no service.

This is a paid notice.

Michael Merritt Donovan

Michael Merritt Donovan of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Greenport, N.Y., died suddenly in the early morning hours of Nov. 11, 2022, at the age of 71. He was a loving husband and proud father of twins, a brother, a caring friend and a colleague.

Born the first of three children to Jean deNoyelles and Bill Donovan on Oct. 6, 1951, Michael lived the first year of his life in the Orthodox Jewish neighborhood of Ocean Parkway. He was raised in Mount Lebanon, Pa., along with his two sisters, Jeanmarie and Suzy, until the family moved to Dresher, Pa. The Donovans spent summers in Greenport with their grandparents Capt. Harry Horton and Marguerite “Marge” Horton, whose family home they continue to live in and love.

Michael graduated from Germantown Academy in Pennsylvania, earned a B.A. from SUNY/Albany (after some fitful starts in other colleges) and later an M.A. and Ph.D in anthropology from New York University.

Early in life he was a bit of a wanderer. Michael’s hitchhiking adventures across the U.S., the Mideast, Africa and parts of Europe offered rich material that contributed to wild, often humorous stories and deep friendships, and later, these journeys likely fed his decision to study anthropology.

Prior to earning his doctorate, Michael worked as a cook in several restaurants (for a period cooking alongside Anthony Bourdain before he was famous) and later drew upon these skills, expressing his love of family and friends through nightly meals and occasional feasts. It was through his cooking that he wooed his then-girlfriend, Erica Herman, who became his wife of 26 years.

Michael had a capacity to listen with deep empathy and to discover underlying meanings and connections. His chosen field was cultural anthropology and he studied historical changes in Kipsigi land-use patterns in Kenya as the Kipsigi people were transitioning from pastoralists to tea farmers and other forms of cash cropping. His work captured the changes in cultural values and kinship that accompanied these economic transitions.

Michael was a founding partner of Practica Group and over the last 24 years he worked as a writer and consultant, taking a fresh look at the cultural spaces inhabited by categories, brands, products, services and institutions. He wrote extensively about changing ideas of community and pursued projects that allowed him to observe people and places transformed by technologies, consumption and political economies. Still, he always returned to Kenya for inspiration. A colleague described Michael as “formidable in both head and heart and he always brought both to any project.”

He took these skills as an anthropologist into his everyday life — bringing them to light at his children’s New York City schools as part of the School Leadership Team. It was in these meetings that he would magically use three words, “I wonder if … ,” gently nudging the tide of the committee. He would go on to say, “I just think it would be helpful if we thought about it differently” — words that helped to make great changes for the schools.

His life was spent with his children, wife, family and friends and he could often be found swimming in an inlet behind his Greenport house called Widow’s Hole. As provider and protector, Michael nurtured the idea of “home” as it was realized in his family.

Michael leaves behind his wife, Erica Herman, and their children, twins Harry Moses Herman Donovan and Willa Mae Herman Donovan of Brooklyn, N.Y.; his middle sister, Jeanmarie Hartung, brother-in-law Tom Hartung and their children and grandchildren; younger sister, Suzanne Donovan, brother-in-law Brian Armstrong; half-brothers, Tom Donovan and Jimmy Donovan; and aunt Patti Donovan and cousins.

Interment took place at Sterling Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Peconic Land Trust, Brooklyn Botanic Garden or the International Rescue Committee.

This is a paid notice.

Ed continued to work on the family farm. He was later employed by North Fork Oil and Heat, where he delivered fuel oil and obtained a master plumber license. For more than 30 years, starting in 1977, Ed worked as the caretaker for the Norris estate in Mattituck, where he put his myriad skills and deep community contacts to good use.

Irving G. Pitman of Southold died early Tuesday morning, Nov. 22, 2022, peaceably at home as he desired. He was 105 years old.

Irv was born on May 9, 1917, in Englewood, N.J. He was delivered by Dr. Valentine Ruch, for whom Ruch Lane in Southold is named. His parents were William and Vina Pitman. Following dental school, he became a dental resident at Englewood Hospital, where he met the love of his life, Suzanne Marklin. They were married in August of 1942 and remained so for 76 years, until she passed in 2018. Following his internship, he joined the Army as a dental officer and was stationed at Camp Lee, Va. Shortly thereafter, he was shipped out to Italy with the 5th Army Medical Corps and remained there until 1945. While in Italy he made lifelong friendships with some Italian citizens, a habit he had of doing. Following his time in the Army, he set up a private practice in Tenafly, N.J., where he practiced until retirement in 1982.

Since 1920, while growing up, Irv spent entire summers in Southold on Ruch Lane. Fishing, swimming and boating were his pet pastimes. Following retirement in 1982, he and Suzanne traveled extensively throughout the U.S., including Alaska, in a motor home. He served on the Consistory of the Community Church of Englewood for many years and then later for Clinton Avenue Reformed Church of Bergenfield. Irv Pitman, proud WWII veteran, dies at 105

No one ever said Irv Pitman hesitated to answer the call for public service.

After Mr. Pitman graduated from Tufts University’s dental school in 1941, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and soon shipped out to Italy with the 5th Army Medical Corps as World War II raged across Europe. He remained there until war’s end in 1945.

When he returned to his home state of New Jersey, he opened a dental practice in Tenafly, where he was on the medical staff of Englewood Hospital. He also served on the hospital’s chaplaincy committee along with other community groups.

A summer resident of Southold from 1920 — when he was just 3 years old — until he and his wife, Suzanne, moved out permanently in 1982, Mr. Pitman died Nov. 22. He was 105 and the oldest World War II veteran in the region at the time of his death.

By anyone’s account, Mr. Pitman was a quiet, unassuming man of accomplishment, who put others before himself. At American Legion Post 803 in Southold, Commander Charles Sanders welcomed him with open arms.

“Dr. Irving Pitman was 100 years old when he stopped by my office at the American Legion, stating, ‘I would like to march in the Memorial Day parade with the Legion,’ Mr. Sanders wrote in an email. “I replied, ‘No problem, sir, we have a car we can put you in and you will have a great time.’

“That was a mistake, as I noticed the frown on his face as the words departed my mouth. He said, ‘I want to march!’ I thought to myself, who am I to say to a World War II veteran that he can’t march?”

So Mr. Pitman did just that.

Charles Sanders, left, with American Legion member Irv Pitman at the town’s Memorial Day Parade. (Credit: Jeremy Garretson)

“At 100 years old, he was able to march in the parade with no problem,” Mr. Sanders added. “When he turned 104, he said he wanted to march again and I didn’t say a thing this time. I was a little worried until one day I noticed him walking alone in front of the Town Hall. I ran out of my office wondering what he was doing alone and I said, ‘Dr. Pitman what are you doing walking on the sidewalk alone?’ He replied, ‘I’m practicing to make sure I can march this time.’ He marched again at 104. He sure is part of the Greatest Generation.”

The love Mr. Pitman felt for Southold, and the love the community felt for him, was on full display in May 2020, when his son John drove him to the American Legion post on Main Road and Mr. Pitman watched as dozens of cars — including town police cars and trucks from area fire departments — helped him celebrate his 103rd birthday.

Last month, Mr. Pitman was honored at a Veterans Day ceremony at the Cutchogue Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at the church on Jan. 14 at 11 a.m.
