Avid reader and epistolarian, inspired storyteller and retired New York City high school teacher and counselor, Anna L. Montes de Oca’s love for her family did not come to an end with her death. Anna passed away on Oct. 7, 2022, peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones who will continue to honor her life by sharing those stories.

Anna was born in New York City to German immigrant parents, making her a first-generation American in her family. She graduated from Bayside High School in Queens and completed her bachelor’s degree from Hunter College. She also completed a master’s degree in education from New York University and a second master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Lehman College, while raising three children and teaching. She shared her passion for learning with her three children and with generations of high school students in New York City’s public schools.

Every morning, Anna religiously read The New York Times and sipped coffee — even during her brief illness. She also took great pleasure in discussing current events on national and world affairs and watching the wetland wildlife from the sitting room in her home in Greenport, N.Y.  She was a lifetime member of Custer Institute and Observatory, where she served as a board member for many years and donated generously.

Anna was predeceased by her parents, Anna (Ruhland) Koester and Alexander Koester; her brother, Frank Koester; and cousin Rosemary Ring; and is survived by her children, Roland F. Montes de Oca, Michele C. Verticchio and Anne D. (Verticchio) Spooner; daughters-in-law Cora Gibney-Montes and Kerry Spooner; and son-in-law Jonathan Prihoda. She was the cherished grandmother of Jaden Blake Montes, Taigh James Montes and Emerson Alexander Spooner and beloved cousin of Ray Gerke and Robert Gerke.

The family would like to express our deepest gratitude for the wonderful care and help given by East End Hospice. If desired, friends can make memorial contributions in Anna Montes de Oca’s name to East End Hospice (eeh.org) or Tri-State Chapter-National Scleroderma Foundation (scleroderma.org/tri-state-chapter).

Reposing will be held Thursday, Oct. 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Tuthill-Mangano Funeral Home in Riverhead, with a funeral service at 8 p.m. Interment will take place at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Calverton National Cemetery.

Richard ‘Dick’ Conklin Reeve

When that envelope arrived in the mail you knew what it would be. The writing on the manila mailer was unmistakable — that blocky textured script. Within you would find a curated selection of news clippings with personalized notations. It was one of the many ways Dick shared affection with those he loved.

Richard “Dick” Conklin Reeve passed away peacefully on Oct. 6, 2022, at 76 years old. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 51 years, Allyson “Wendy” Reeve; his children, Ken and Jessica, and their spouses; and his five grandchildren.

The youngest son of Harold R. Reeve Jr. and Margaret Conklin Reeve, Dick was born at Greenport Hospital May 21, 1946. He graduated from Mattituck High School in 1964 and served as a Navy Seabee from 1969 to 1971 after graduating from Ft. Lauderdale University in 1969. The plan was to graduate from Bucknell University in 1968, but Dick took his obligations as social director for Kappa Delta Row fraternity quite seriously and his academic trajectory changed in the course of fulfilling those duties. He was predeceased by many close fraternity brothers who remained lifelong friends and family.

Except for college and military service, Dick built his life on the North Fork of Long Island.

He built many other people’s lives there, too, or at least their homes. Carrying on the family business established by their grandfather, Dick and his two brothers, John and the late Jim Reeve, built some of the most beautiful homes in the Hamptons, homes featured in architectural magazines for their design and fine craftsmanship. A hands-on construction supervisor, he devoted many long hours six days a week to making Harold R. Reeve & Sons thrive. On his day off, this freckled redhead could often be found soaking up the sun in his backyard lounger. Sunscreen be damned. After more than 40 years of devoted service, the Reeve brothers made the difficult decision to close the business and that chapter of their lives in 2012.

Throughout his life, Dick always found time for entertaining. He lavished attention on his friends and family, quick with a refreshing drink, hot mustard or homemade horseradish. You wouldn’t have struggled to pick him out at the party with his striped party shirts and lively sport jackets.

He loved traveling to warm places. Anywhere with a palm tree would do. Once on scene in a tropical locale, he would don his Panama Jack hat and channel his alter ego, “Richard Bond.” The only rule was that revelers must respect the late afternoon lull known as National Nap Time (NNT).

And so, as Dick closes his eyes for a much-deserved rest in the final NNT, the family requests that you pour yourself a drink, clip out an article or two, and mail them to a loved one. Preferably in a manila envelope. There will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Cutchogue Fire Department Rescue Squad or Cutchogue New Suffolk Free Library.

Bob Travers, aka Hurricane Bob, of Black Mountain, N.C., passed away on Oct. 15, 2022, at the age of 60, after an arduous battle with cancer.

He was born on May 21, 1962, in Mineola, Long Island, N.Y., to Mary and Jim Travers. The youngest of five siblings, he was predeceased by both parents and brother Jim.

His fondest childhood memories were of his summers at his family’s home in Southold, N.Y. He was most happy while performing onstage with his two sons, displaying how proud he was.

Bob was a gifted musician who began playing guitar at the age of 9. He became a professional musician in his teens, playing and touring his entire life. Bob’s high-energy singing, impeccable guitar playing and larger-than-life stage presence entertained people all over the country. He was a blues player who played a mean slide guitar. He also had a rockabilly band called the Magdaddys.

Dubbed “Hurricane Bob” by Richmond, Va., fans, it was no accident when one evening during a blistering jam session in a local blues club, the rains hit. The storm outside and inside was Hurricane Bob.

Bob married the love of his life, Kristie Isenhour, and they had two children, twins Eric Robert Travers and Kyle Patrick Travers. He taught them to play various instruments when they were young and they, in turn, are now both talented professional musicians.

Bob is survived by sons Eric and Kyle; grandson Jackson; Kristie Isenhour; his three sisters, Kathleen Marie Travers, Barbara Jean Travers and Janet Frances Travers; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a musical event celebrating Bob’s life in North Carolina, which will be announced at a later date.

Rest in peace, Bob. We love you.
