Dorothy Penny of Glen Cove and Southold passed away Jan. 25 at the age of 84.

Dorothy was born in Llangwm, Pembrokeshire, Wales, to Elsie and James Davies. As an only child growing up on a remote farm, she began her lifelong love of both books and nature. When she was 25, she moved to London, where she met her “beloved” soulmate Desmond Penny. Dorothy and Des moved to Brooklyn in 1959, and in 1964 bought a home in Glen Cove, where they raised their family. After Des died in 2010, Dorothy adopted Southold as her second home.

Dorothy had many passions. She read four to five books a month, along with The New York Times every day (her day was not complete until the crossword was done, in pen of course). She was an expert and avid gardener, loved playing the piano, attending concerts, opera, theater, ballet, playing tennis and rarely missed a sunset at the beach.

She had a long career in banking, working in Glen Cove, Manhattan and Uniondale. She believed deeply in the concept of giving of herself, volunteering for many organizations over the years, most notably Literacy Volunteers of America. She taught reading literacy and also ran a long-term English language class at Glen Cove Public Library.

She loved nothing more than sharing her positive outlook on life and her love of nature with her children, grandchildren and close friends.

Dorothy is survived by her three children, Caroline (Doug) MacArthur of Southold, Nick (Natalie) of Bayville, N.Y., and Stephen (Diane) of McCall, Idaho; and eight grandchildren, James and Heather MacArthur, and Jeremy, Jessica, Matthew, Carolyn, Connor and Sam Penny.

All are welcome to attend a memorial service celebrating her life on March 2 at First Presbyterian Church of Southold at 11 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to East End Hospice, National Wildlife Federation or Southold Free Library.

This is a paid notice.

Oct. 31, 1954 – Feb. 5, 2019

One of the Lord’s angels here on earth was called to heaven.

On a twinkling winter’s afternoon, we sang our beloved Heidi Burczyk Vandall into eternal sleep. Born on All Hallows Eve, 1954, in Penn Yan, N.Y., she joins her father, John Richard, of Hazelton, Pa., and her mother, Edith Charlotte, of Rugen, Germany, as well as her only brother, John Edward, of Greenport, N.Y., in her final resting place. She leaves a void in the hearts of her husband, Peter Vandall, and her sisters, Patricia Urban of Kalispell, Mont., Trudy Boeding of Denver, Colo., Diana Busso of Rathdrum, ldaho, and Caroline Burczyk of Coeur d’Alene, ldaho.

An alumna of Greenport High School (Class of 1972), the joys of growing up on Long Island only deepened Heidi’s love for the sea. Although she was accepted into the Air Force, her travels as a missionary nun, and later with the Singing Nuns of Spokane, took her on many adventures throughout the U.S. and Canada. She never lost her spirit for travel and explored the shores of California and Hawaii.

Her 11-year career at Verizon brought new-found joy and responsibility. That joy only blossomed more with the introduction to her husband, Peter Vandall, in 2006. The couple lovingly joined in marriage Oct. 18, 2006, on a beach in Kauai, which soon became one of their favorite destinations during their beautiful years together.

Survived and adored by eight nephews, five nieces, two stepsons, one stepdaughter and five step-grandchildren, she loved and cared for every one of them with all of her heart and being. Their love for her continues to be undeniable, unending and irreplaceable. Heidi remains truly one of the kindest, most generous and gentle souls the world has had the pleasure of knowing. Her sparkle, smile and impact on this life will stay with her family and friends now and forever.

I will love you to the moon and back.

A visitation and rosary was held Feb. 10 at Yates Funeral Home in Idaho. A funeral service took place Feb. 11 at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Idaho, followed by a graveside service at St. Joseph Cemetery in Spokane Valley, Wash. Yates Funeral Home was entrusted with final arrangements. Please visit Heidi’s online memorial and sign her guest book at yatesfuneralhomes.com.

Joseph Soito

Joseph Soito, 82, a lifelong resident of Orient, found the perfect clamming spot in heaven, Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2019.

Joe, also known as “Josie,” was born in Greenport Hospital Jan. 28, 1937, to Emilia and Estacio Soito. He was predeceased by his sister Mary.

A graduate of Greenport High School, Joe was employed as a plumber until Uncle Sam called him to service in the U.S. Army in 1960. Sergeant Soito was discharged from the army in 1962.

Upon return, he was employed by Ike Edwards Oil Company where he learned the trade as an oil burner technician and enjoyed helping the community stay warm until his retirement from Burt’s Reliable in 2007.

In 1964, Joe married Paddy D’Andrea. Joe and Paddy welcomed two children, Jo-Ann Soito (Faulk) of Framingham, Mass. and Joseph Soito Jr., of Wakefield, R.I. After raising their children, they were gifted with Raechel Soito (daughter of Joseph), Jessica and Jane Faulk (daughter of Jo-Ann and Jolyon Faulk) and Seth and Meghan Baxter (children of Joe’s wife, Diane).

Joe joined the Orient Fire Department at 18 and except for the years in the Army, he jumped up and out at each alarm, for 60 years, at which time he retired.

Orient Causeway will never be the same, because Joe will no longer be spotted there clamming, an almost daily sight. If he wasn’t there, he could be found on Youngs Road Beach casting for blackfish, in the bay looking for scallops and in all his secret places searching for crabs and anything else. He also enjoyed pheasant and duck hunting, and was a member of the Orient Gun Club for most of his life.

All the dogs in heaven have been waiting for “Papa Joe,” the notorious under the table feeder. Not only will all the dogs he left behind miss him, but also all the children, many now adults, who treasured playing with “Papa Joe.”

It is certain that Joe will find playmates in heaven until we can all join him. May he rest in peace.

Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport assisted the family.

Cornelius McShane

Cornelius McShane, 83, of New York, N.Y., passed away Feb. 9, 2019.

Born Aug. 5, 1935, to parents Connell and Mary McShane, Neil spent his childhood in Far Rockaway, Queens, growing up with his sister Mary Theresa and first cousins Mary and Bill Madden.

He attended Catholic grammar school and eventually received a scholarship to attend Bishop Loughlin High School. After serving in France for several years as a member of the Armed Services, he returned on the G.I. Bill to earn a degree in finance from Saint John’s University and eventually an MBA from New York University. Hired by IBM upon graduation, he left shortly after that to start a 34-year career with Met Life in the real estate investments division.

On June 30, 1962, Neil married Carol Coleman. They spent their early married years in Stuyvesant Town, but decided after their fourth child was born that apartment living was not going to work for a family of six. A purchase of a delightful, but older home for $60,000 soon transpired and a new life for the family began in Montvale, N.J.

The children attended school, Carol secured a job as an elementary teacher and Neil dutifully boarded the 6:27 a.m. train every morning on his way to Met Life. He served as a member of the planning and zoning board for 17 years and was accordingly awarded Citizen of the Year in 1987.

In 1974, during the gas crisis, as Neil and Carol were searching for a summer rental on the North Fork of Long Island, they identified a suitable cottage but were then informed by their realtor that the owner was desperate to sell. With a $6,000 down payment and $2,000 owner financing, the home was theirs. Such began a life of weekend trips to Nassau Point, summers for Carol at the beach, summer employment for the kids and annual extended family gatherings at the end of August. Neil helped coordinate the Annual Children’s Picnic, the Garage Sale at the Beach and was elected president of Nassau Point Property Owner’s Association. In time, the simple cottage became a cherished place to celebrate life, friendship and family.

In the early 1990s Neil and Carol began living their dream retirement. With all their children graduated from college, they traveled internationally, expanded the summer cottage and based themselves out of Peter Cooper Village in New York City. And of course, there was more time to spend with the grandchildren.

Neil is survived by his wife; his sister, Mary Theresa Basile; children Neil Jr., Gregory (Peggy), Jennifer (Michael) and Christopher (Mishelle); and grandchildren Brendan, Aedan, Brigid, Erin, Shannon, Peter, Sean, Isabella and Joseph.

Visitors were received Feb. 14 at Gannon Funeral Home in New York City. A funeral Mass took place at Epiphany Church in New York City Feb. 15, followed by a reception in the basement of the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Epiphany Church, “Friends of Music.”
