Carmela Schiavoni of Greenport went to her eternal home on Tuesday, Oct. 17, 2023. She was 89 years old.
She was born on Jan. 30, 1934, to Maria (née Tartaglione) and Francesco De Creszenzo in Marcianise, a small town in Naples, Italy. She was the second youngest of seven children.
On Oct. 28, 1961, she married Alphonse Schiavoni, a Greenport native. She was proud to become a United States citizen and made Greenport her home.
Carmela was employed for many years as a seamstress in the Greenport village. She also designed custom garments as a dressmaker from her home. Many of her clients summered on the North Fork, and she gathered lifetime friendships there as well as in the community. She loved people, and they were drawn to her as well. As a woman of strong faith, she was a dedicated parishioner of St. Agnes R.C. Church, member of the Rosary Society, and for many years a weekly volunteer at San Simeon by the Sound nursing home setting up communion service for the residents. In her early years, she volunteered at the St. Agnes soup kitchen and was also a longtime member of the Greenport American Legion Women’s Auxiliary.
Predeceased by her husband, Alphonse, and her granddaughter Michelle Schiavoni, Carmela is survived by her sister, Tomasina D’Anna of Naples, Italy; her son Frank Schiavoni of Greenport; her daughter, Maria Cockerill, and son-in-law Bob of Scottsdale, Ariz.; her grandson, Dr. Jason Cockerill, M.D., and his wife, Dr. Nilofar Najafian, M.D. of Scottsdale; her granddaughter Marissa Aubin of Mooers, N.Y., and three great-grandchildren. She also leaves numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, both in the United States and Italy.
A Rosary service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 30 at Horton-Mathie Funeral Home in Greenport. An 11 a.m. funeral Mass will be observed also on Monday, Oct. 30 at St. Agnes R.C. Church, with Father Piotr Narkiewicz officiating. A cremation burial will follow the mass at St. Agnes Cemetery.
This is a paid notice.
